Book Howard University the First Hundred Years 1867 1967

Download or read book Howard University the First Hundred Years 1867 1967 written by Rayford W. Logan and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1969 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Rayford W. Logan’s astute history of Howard University appeared in 1969, Logan was in a unique position to analyze one of the nation’s most prominent African American colleges. He had recently completed nearly thirty years at Howard as a history professor, living and teaching through almost a third of the school’s first century. Drawing from his own knowledge and university documents, Logan traced Howard’s chronology from 1866, when it was conceived as a theological seminary for African American ministers, to the increasingly successful, and in Logan’s words, cosmopolitan, institution of the 1960s. Logan detailed university milestones, including Howard’s founding by an act of Congress in 1867 and the election of Dr. Mordecai W. Johnson, the university’s first black president, in 1926, as well as the accomplishments of Howard graduates. More than thirty years after its first publication, Logan’s engaging account is essential for a thorough understanding of Howard, and its place in the legacy of historically black universities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Howard University Record, Vol. 3: November, 1909 I am far from saying - and I wish to put in this caveat in advance, in Order notto be met by an argument which, has, Weight but has not weight when improperly used - that the colored race today. All of them, _would be-better Off if they all had university education. I think they would be in a very bad way if they had, because they would not know how to use it, andthey. Would not find, means of using it.. No race Would be better off if they were all educated as university men. The great body of the Colored race, as the great body of the white race, must depend for their livelihood upon their manual labor, skilled or unskilled, or upon some occupation which requires less education than that which is conferred by a university, and if it is too widely extended the effect of it is to put a lot of men into life who do not find occupations which are suited to their taste, and to make them unhappy and really not fit for the life which is before them. Book Rooting for the Home Team

Download or read book Rooting for the Home Team written by Daniel A. Nathan and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooting for the Home Team examines how various American communities create and maintain a sense of collective identity through sports. Looking at large cities such as Chicago, Baltimore, and Los Angeles as well as small rural towns, suburbs, and college towns, the contributors consider the idea that rooting for local athletes and home teams often symbolizes a community's preferred understanding of itself, and that doing so is an expression of connectedness, public pride and pleasure, and personal identity. Some of the wide-ranging essays point out that financial interests also play a significant role in encouraging fan bases, and modern media have made every seasonal sport into yearlong obsessions. Celebrities show up for big games, politicians throw out first pitches, and taxpayers pay plenty for new stadiums and arenas. The essays in Rooting for the Home Team cover a range of professional and amateur athletics, including teams in basketball, football, baseball, and even the phenomenon of no-glove softball. Contributors are Amy Bass, Susan Cahn, Mark Dyreson, Michael Ezra, Elliott J. Gorn, Christopher Lamberti, Allison Lauterbach, Catherine M. Lewis, Shelley Lucas, Daniel A. Nathan, Michael Oriard, Carlo Rotella, Jaime Schultz, Mike Tanier, David K. Wiggins, and David W. Zang.
