Download or read book The House on Lombardy Lane written by Dave Landry and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, The House on Lombardy Lane, was inspired by my days as a teen in Little Rock, Arkansas, where I was disappointed when my parents, who were grocery store merchants, did not buy the house we had looked at on Lombardy Lane, Pulaski Heights, Little Rock, Arkansas, with intentions of purchasing it. Thoughts of this house haunted me throughout my life even throughout twenty-five years of living abroad and teaching for the Department of Defense Overseas Dependent Schools throughout Europe. My family actually bought a gorgeous house on Wolfe Street, West Little Rock, in 1945, conveniently placing our family close to then Little Rock High School (now Little Rock Central High) and making it convenient to walk to school and to work at our third grocery store on West Fourteenth Street, Little Rock. The book tells of the many exciting places I lived and taught in the United States and abroad. The House on Lombardy Lane still captivates my thoughts and illusions as to how much more dynamically I would have completed my lifes journey had my parents purchased this fabulous house of my dreams!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry was never meaningful to me, but after hearing a poet speak, while attending the University of Southern California in 1960, I became aware of how meaningful poetry can be in our lives. I never even attempted writing poetry until I retired in 2001 and the ideas began to flow as I meditated on my years as a secondary teacher and school administrator, and on my hobbies. The poem, “Seasons,” came to me this year as I sat at my desk in a small country school in Arkansas where I often spend time substituting. I spent twenty-five years in Europe and pursued hunting as a hobby, ardently while living there. I am now back in Arkansas and spend much of my time pursuing my hobbies of fishing and hunting. It is during such activities that I am truly inspired to express my feelings portrayed in my poem, “Seasons.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The New Suburbia explores how the suburbs transitioned from bastions of segregation into spaces of multiracial living. They are the second generation of suburbs after 1945, moving from starkly segregated whiteness into a more varied, uneven social landscape. The suburbs came to hold a broad cross-section of people - rich, poor, Black American, Latino, Asian, immigrant, the unhoused, and the lavishly housed, and everyone in between. In the new suburbia, white advantage persisted, but it existed alongside rising inequality, ethnic and racial diversity, and new family configurations. Through it all, the common denominators of suburbia remained - low-slung landscapes of single-family homes and yards and families seeking the good life. On this familiar landscape, the American dream endured even as the dreamers changed"--
Download or read book Folding Chairs on the Sand written by Sue Harford Ferdig Allerton and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little did Cliff Henderson know when he launched his idea to develop the ‘Sand Hole,’ Coachella Valley, into the upscale city of Palm Desert the revelations that lay before him. His endeavor led him to ‘discover’ a small group of faithful bible readers on his newly purchased land. Joining them, the group grew to become the church of General Eisenhower and his wife, Mamie. The history of the early church begins with folding chairs on the desert sand under the blue sky to a magnificent church building that seats more than a thousand people. The city of Palm Desert that Cliff developed became everything he had hoped as the ‘smartest address in the desert.’ Movie stars and captains of industry bought property to build their vacation and retirement homes designed by some of the finest architects of desert homes. The Palm Desert shopping district, El Paseo, favorably competed with upscale shopping districts of New York and Hollywood. Soon magnificent resorts with 18-hole golf courses went in along with golfing fundraisers that started with the words, Bob Hope Classics. With the development of Palm Desert, neighboring areas developed as well, all upscale and host to many different sports, such as tennis, swimming, golfing, bicycling, and triathlons.
