Book excerpt: Jan Berry, leader of the music duo Jan & Dean from the late 1950s to mid-1960s, was an intense character who experienced more in his first 25 years than many do in a lifetime. As an architect of the West Coast sound, he was one of rock 'n' roll's original rebels--brilliant, charismatic, reckless, and flawed. As a songwriter, music arranger, and record producer for Nevin-Kirshner Associates and Screen Gems-Columbia Music, Berry was one of the pioneering self-produced artists of his era in Hollywood. He lived a dual life, reaching the top of the charts with Jan & Dean while transitioning from college student to medical student, until an automobile accident in 1966 changed his trajectory forever. Suffering from brain damage and partial paralysis, Jan spent the rest of his life trying to come back from Dead Man's Curve. His story is told here in-depth for the first time, based on extensive primary source documentation and supplemented by the stories and memories of Jan's family members, friends, music industry colleagues, and contemporaries. From the birth of rock to the bitter end, Berry's life story is thrilling, humorous, unsettling, and disturbing, yet ultimately uplifting.

Book Reminiscences of a Christian Family

Download or read book Reminiscences of a Christian Family written by Silas Dobbs McCaslin and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-02-13 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silas McCaslin provides true stories about his grandparents and parents in their Christian lives in the early twentieth century South. He then describes his life in a small southern town in the 1940s and 1950s, filled with BB guns, barefoot summers, shooting marbles, riding bikes, unsupervised hours of outdoor play, unlocked doors, Saturday afternoon picture shows, plenty of mischief; Sunday church, and Wednesday prayer meetings; the arrival of the refrigerator, washing machine, air conditioning, television, and memories of presidents Roosevelt, Truman, and Eisenhower. Sufficient details are given of the tragic death of his father at age forty-five and the irrepressible determination of his widowed mother. These were simpler times and innocent times. Sis wistful narrative of growing up with big brother Jay will bring a smile to your face, as well as a touch of sadness for the loss of the positive side of an imperfect civilization that is lost forever. Dr. Terry L. Johnson (From the FOREWORD) For me to say that REMINISCENCES OF A CHRISTIAN FAMILY IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY SOUTH is an interesting work is an extremely inadequate description of the book. Assuredly it is that, but it is much, much more than that! For me, it was no less than intellectually consuming and emotionally captivating as I was escorted back into a long-forgotten period of this nations innocent history. In addition, the book was rendered more personal to me than usual. My first wife, deceased now, was Foy Taylor, the daughter of T.F. and Lavinia Taylor; they were a part of this book. Paige Cothren (Pastor, Speaker, and Christian Counselor)

Book Kerouac on Record

Download or read book Kerouac on Record written by Simon Warner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was the leading light of the Beat Generation writers and the most dynamic author of his time, but Jack Kerouac also had a lifelong passion for music, particularly the mid-century jazz of New York City, the development of which he witnessed first-hand during the 1940s with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk to the fore. The novelist, most famous for his 1957 book On the Road, admired the sounds of bebop and attempted to bring something of their original energy to his own writing, a torrent of semi-autobiographical stories he published between 1950 and his early death in 1969. Yet he was also drawn to American popular music of all kinds – from the blues to Broadway ballads – and when he came to record albums under his own name, he married his unique spoken word style with some of the most talented musicians on the scene. Kerouac's musical legacy goes well beyond the studio recordings he made himself: his influence infused generations of music makers who followed in his work – from singer-songwriters to rock bands. Some of the greatest transatlantic names – Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead, Van Morrison and David Bowie, Janis Joplin and Tom Waits, Sonic Youth and Death Cab for Cutie, and many more – credited Kerouac's impact on their output. In Kerouac on Record, we consider how the writer brought his passion for jazz to his prose and poetry, his own record releases, the ways his legacy has been sustained by numerous more recent talents, those rock tributes that have kept his memory alive and some of the scores that have featured in Hollywood adaptations of the adventures he brought to the printed page.

Book excerpt: Jan & Dean were among the most successful artists of the late 1950s through the mid-1960s, with hits including "Baby Talk," "Surf City," "Dead Man's Curve" and "The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena)." Slapstick humor and offbeat personas were a big part of their shtick, but Jan Berry was serious when it came to the studio. This book chronicles Jan's career as a songwriter and arranger--and his tenure as producer for Jan & Dean and other acts--with day-by-day entries detailing recording sessions, single and album releases, concerts and appearances, film and television projects, behind-the-scenes business and legal matters, chart positions and more.
