Book House of Prayer No 2

Download or read book House of Prayer No 2 written by Mark Richard and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crippled by deformed hips as a child, Mark Richard was told he would spend his adult life in a wheelchair. The son of an unpredictable, violent father and a mother who sought inner peace through scripture, Richard spent his bedridden childhood in the company of books. As a young man, he set out to experience as much of the world as possible before his hips failed him. He spent years doing odd jobs and getting into trouble, grappling throughout with his faith and his calling, before winning a national fiction contest and launching an extraordinary writing career. In this irresistible blend of history, travelogue, and personal reflection, Richard draws a remarkable portrait of a writer’s struggle with his faith, the evolution of his art, and the recognition of one’s singularity in the face of painful disability.

Book Daddy Grace

  • Author : Marie W. Dallam
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 2009-04
  • ISBN : 0814720374
  • Pages : 271 pages

Download or read book Daddy Grace written by Marie W. Dallam and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Manuel “Sweet Daddy” Grace founded the United House of Prayer for All People in Wareham, Massachusetts, in 1919. This charismatic church has been regarded as one of the most extreme Pentecostal sects in the country. In addition to attention-getting maneuvers such as wearing purple suits with glitzy jewelry, purchasing high profile real estate, and conducting baptisms in city streets with a fire hose, the flamboyant Grace reputedly accepted massive donations from his poverty-stricken followers and used the money to live lavishly. It was assumed by many that Grace was the charismatic glue that held his church together, and that once he was gone the institution would disintegrate. Instead, following his 1960 death there was a period of confusion, restructuring, and streamlining. Today the House of Prayer remains an active church with a national membership in the tens of thousands. Daddy Grace: A Celebrity Preacher and His House of Prayer seriously examines the religious nature of the House of Prayer, the dimensions of Grace’s leadership strategies, and the connections between his often ostentatious acts and the intentional infrastructure of the House of Prayer. Furthermore, woven through the text are analyses of the race, class, and gender issues manifest in the House of Prayer structure under Grace’s aegis. Marie W. Dallam here offers both a religious history of the House of Prayer as an institution and an intellectual history of its colorful and enigmatic leader.

Book Holy Jumpers

  • Author : William Kostlevy
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-05-19
  • ISBN : 0199703361
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book Holy Jumpers written by William Kostlevy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-19 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, William Kostlevy presents a fascinating study of the Metropolitan Church Association (MCA), a religious community founded in Chicago in the early 1890s. The MCA was one of the most controversial societies of the era. Its members were called "jumpers" because of their acrobatic worship style, and "Burning Bushers" after their caustic periodical, the Burning Bush. They objected to the concept of private property, rejected "elite" denominations, and professed an alternative, radical vision of Christianity, using modern music and folk art to spread their message. A product of the holiness revival of the late nineteenth century and a catalyst for Pentecostalism, the MCA played a vital role in the twentieth century growth of evangelical Christianity, yet it has long been ignored in studies of American radicalism, of communal societies, and even of holiness and Pentecostal Christianity. Kostlevy rectifies this omission, providing a valuable new context for understanding the origins of Pentecostalism. He investigates the internal struggles of the Holiness Movement, showing how radically divergent theological currents came to dominate a major segment of the American evangelical community. He also shows how deeply the MCA impacted the lives of twentieth century evangelists Bud Robinson and Seth C. Rees, self-designated first woman bishop Alma White, and Pentecostal evangelists A. G. Garr and Glenn Cook. As Holy Jumpers demonstrates, Holiness Christians, and the MCA in particular, played a profoundly formative role in the development of modern evangelical and Pentecostal Christianity.

Dont look down on the ministry you are doing whether in the church or at home or elsewhere. Wherever you meet to call on the name of the Lord is your house of prayer. You can look through church history till today and it will amaze you that most ministries started with two or three people, whether family members or co-workers or just friends. Book A House of Prayer for All Peoples

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to the oft-repeated truism, there are churches in America where Sunday is not the "most segregated day of the week," as Sheryl Kujawa-Holbrook convincingly demonstrates in her compelling exploration of congregations tackling racial justice issues. Yet the truism continues to haunt many congregations, and Kujawa-Holbrook reveals, through story and thoughtful analysis, what it means to create and live out multiracial community. Focusing on six congregations from different denominations, geographical regions, and settings, the author shows us the joys and struggles in their intentional pursuits of a more diverse and just community. The stories in A House of Prayer for All Peoples will inspire leaders to explore their congregation's history, study their community's demographics, and, most of all, search their souls for ways they can develop and celebrate the diversity in their midst. The book is capped by an extensive annotated resource list for readers who want to explore the topic further.

Book My House Shall Be a House of Prayer

Download or read book My House Shall Be a House of Prayer written by Lance Lambert and published by Lance Lambert Ministries, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the return of the Lord draws near there has never been a time when effective prayer is more strategic, necessary, and essential than now. Will we be a people who will truly watch and pray? Will anyone respond to His call and challenge? Corporate intercession is almost a lost art--and that when we most need it! I sought for a man among them, that should build up the wall, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found none (Ezekiel 22:30). This is the call and challenge of the Lord.
