Book The Life and Letters of George Gordon Meade Volume II Abridged

Download or read book The Life and Letters of George Gordon Meade Volume II Abridged written by Colonel George Gordon Meade (son) and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is high time that dispute should cease as to the award due him who won the greatest battle of the war, upon which it turned, saving the nation's capital, and giving to the Rebellion a blow from which it never recovered...it remains for history to record that, from the beginning to the end of the Rebellion, it was only when Meade was chief that Lee was ever met in pitched battle and defeated on equal terms." Called in the dead of night to General Hooker's headquarters, George Meade thought he might be heading to be relieved of command or arrested. Instead, he emerged from Hooker's tent and told his aide "Well, I am in command of the Army of the Potomac." And he was headed for Gettysburg. Meade spent the rest of his life defending his actions at Gettysburg. His skillful deployment and management of the command at that battlefield was a major Union victory and the turning point of the war. In this second volume of his letters, his son and grandson present a narrative, letters to and from Meade, and letters from other participants in the battle that corroborate Meade's rightful position as the hero of Gettysburg. No study of the American Civil War is complete without this two-volume set. For the first time ever, this long-out-of-print book is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.

Book excerpt: Written by the chief military correspondent of the New York Times and a prominent retired Marine general, this is the definitive account of the invasion of Iraq. A stunning work of investigative journalism, Cobra II describes in riveting detail how the American rush to Baghdad provided the opportunity for the virulent insurgency that followed. As Gordon and Trainor show, the brutal aftermath was not inevitable and was a surprise to the generals on both sides. Based on access to unseen documents and exclusive interviews with the men and women at the heart of the war, Cobra II provides firsthand accounts of the fighting on the ground and the high-level planning behind the scenes. Now with a new afterword that addresses what transpired after the fateful events of the summer of 2003, this is a peerless re-creation and analysis of the central event of our times.

JOHN MALCOLM BULLOCH, M.A. NEW SPALDING CLUB. PREFATORY NOTE. The great source of information about the Gight Gordons is the Privy Council Register, and the importance of the family is so great, and their lawlessness is so vividly described there, that I have not hesitated to quote at length. The Balbithan MS. contains a good account of the family (pp. 15-8). Dr. Temple in his Thanage of Fermartyn (pp. 72-8) gives a deduction based on the Balbithan MS. I have consulted a great many other authorities, who will be found cited in the course of the history, which is an enlargement of two different sets of articles contributed by me to the Aberdeen Free Press, November 11, 18 and 25, December 21, 1898, and March 25, 1899, to Scottish Notes and Queries, February, 1899-February, 1900. I have been unable to discover the whereabouts of the contents of the Gight charter chest. I am indebted for help to Rev. Dr. Temple, Mr. Murray Rose, Rev. Dr. Milne, Fyvie; Mr. A. M. Munro, Aberdeen; and others, notably Rev. Stephen Ree, Boharm; and Captain Wimberley, Inverness, who have read the proof sheets--a very laborious task. I have dealt in a more or less narrative fashion with the two most famous members of the family, Colonel John Gordon, who was implicated in the assassination of Wallenstein, 1634, and Colonel Nathaniel Gordon, the Royalist, who was executed at St. Andrews, 1646.
