Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House at High Bridge: A Novel Of course he's here, said the girl, looking straight into her mother's face, and not at all at the neat-clad male figure which had just taken several brisk steps in front of them.. Where did you think he'd be, mamma? She went on, as if the question were meant to pierce depths of maternal conscience. A little more, and I declare he'd have heard you. You're so careless in that way. The two women walked much slower than the man was doing. They were both jaded by their shopping in the hot city, and moved along as if their bundles were an almost painful clog. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Edith Warner, who lived for more than twenty years as a neighbor to the Indians of San Ildefonso Pueblo, near Los Alamos, New Mexico. She was a remarkable woman, a friend to everyone who knew her, from her Indian companion Tilano, who was an elder of San Ildefonso, to Niels Bohr, Robert Oppenheimer, and the other atomic scientists who worked at Los Alamos during World War II. "A finely told tale of a strange land and of a rare character who united with it and, without seeming to do anything to that end, exerted an unusual influence upon all other lovers of that soil with whom she came in contact. The quality of the country, of the many kinds of people, and of the central character come through excellently." --Oliver La Farge

Download or read book High Bridge written by William Honachefsky Jr. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of High Bridge is intertwined with the development of the iron and steel industry in the United States. As early as the 1700s, the framework of this little hamlet had already been created by English investors who carved up the rich wilderness of the New World, brimming with iron ore that would be essential to the county's development. High Bridge Borough evolved around the Taylor Wharton Foundry, established in 1742. With the passage of time, however, High Bridge has lost its farming and foundry roots, evolving into what is often referred to as a bedroom community. Just like the lofty trestle from which High Bridge derived its name, the city now runs the risk of being lost to time, forsaking the resilient character of the immigrants who forged a nation. This book aims to preserve High Bridge's glorious history for future generations.

Book This Is the Night Our House Will Catch Fire A Memoir

Download or read book This Is the Night Our House Will Catch Fire A Memoir written by Nick Flynn and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A searing memoir on how childhood spills into parenthood from the critically acclaimed author of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. When Nick Flynn was seven years old, his mother set fire to their house. The event loomed large in his imagination for years, but it’s only after having a child of his own that he understands why. He returns with his young daughter to the landscape of his youth, reflecting on how his feral childhood has him still in its reins, and forms his memories into lyrical bedtime stories populated by the both sinister and wounded Mister Mann. With the spare lyricism and dark irony of his classic, Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, Flynn excavates the terrain of his traumatic upbringing and his mother’s suicide. This Is the Night Our House Will Catch Fire unravels the story of the fire that Flynn had to escape, and the ways in which, as an adult, he has carried that fire with him until it threatens to burn down his own house. Here Nick confronts his failings with fierce candor, even as they threaten to tear his family apart. His marriage in crisis, Flynn seeks answers from his therapist, who tells him he has “the ethics of a drowning man.” This Is the Night Our House Will Catch Fire takes us on the journey of a man struggling to hold himself together in prose that is raw and moving, sharp-edged and wry. Alternating literary analysis and philosophy with intimate memoir, Flynn probes his deepest ethical dilemmas.

Book Blow Your House Down

Download or read book Blow Your House Down written by Gina Frangello and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice • A Good Morning America Recommended Book • A LitReactor Best Book of the Year • A BuzzFeed Most Anticipated Book of the Year • A Lit Hub Most Anticipated Book of the Year • A Rumpus Most Anticipated Book of the Year • A Bustle Most Anticipated Book of the Month "A pathbreaking feminist manifesto, impossible to put down or dismiss. Gina Frangello tells the morally complex story of her adulterous relationship with a lover and her shortcomings as a mother, and in doing so, highlights the forces that shaped, silenced, and shamed her: everyday misogyny, puritanical expectations regarding female sexuality and maternal sacrifice, and male oppression." —Adrienne Brodeur, author of Wild Game Gina Frangello spent her early adulthood trying to outrun a youth marked by poverty and violence. Now a long-married wife and devoted mother, the better life she carefully built is emotionally upended by the death of her closest friend. Soon, awakened to fault lines in her troubled marriage, Frangello is caught up in a recklessly passionate affair, leading a double life while continuing to project the image of the perfect family. When her secrets are finally uncovered, both her home and her identity will implode, testing the limits of desire, responsibility, love, and forgiveness. Blow Your House Down is a powerful testimony about the ways our culture seeks to cage women in traditional narratives of self-sacrifice and erasure. Frangello uses her personal story to examine the place of women in contemporary society: the violence they experience, the rage they suppress, the ways their bodies often reveal what they cannot say aloud, and finally, what it means to transgress "being good" in order to reclaim your own life.

Book London Bridge and its Houses c 1209 1761

Download or read book London Bridge and its Houses c 1209 1761 written by Dorian Gerhold and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London Bridge lined with houses from end to end was one of the most extraordinary structures ever seen in London. It was home to over 500 people, perched above the rushing waters of the Thames, and was one of the city’s main shopping streets. It is among the most familiar images of London in the past, but little has previously been known about the houses and the people who lived and worked in them. This book uses plentiful newly-discovered evidence, including detailed descriptions of nearly every house, to tell the story of the bridge and its houses and inhabitants. With the new information it is possible to reconstruct the plan of the bridge and houses in the seventeenth century, to trace the history of each house back through rentals and a survey to 1358, revealing the original layout, to date most of the houses which appear in later views, and to show how the houses and their occupants changed during five and half centuries. The book describes what stopped the houses falling into the river, how the houses were gradually enlarged, what their layout was inside, what goods were sold on the bridge and how these changed over time, the extensive rebuilding in 1477-1548 and 1683-96, and the removal of the houses around 1760. There are many new discoveries - about the structure of the bridge, the width of the roadway, the original layout of the houses, how the houses were supported, the size and internal planning of the houses, the quality of their architecture, and the trades practised on the bridge. The book includes five newly-commissioned reconstruction drawings showing what we now know about the bridge and its houses.

Book High Bridge Glens of Cuyahoga Falls

Download or read book High Bridge Glens of Cuyahoga Falls written by Mary L. McClure and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to its breathtaking waterfalls, mysterious caves, and thrilling roller coaster--rumored to be one of the first in the United States--the High Bridge Glens and Caves Park, located along the banks of the thundering Cuyahoga River, made the northeast Ohio community of Cuyahoga Falls one of the leading tourist destinations in the state in the late 1800s. At the height of its popularity, the park attracted more than 8,000 visitors per day. Guests ranged from future US president (then congressman) William McKinley to internationally known trapeze artists. Although reporters quickly dubbed the park "the Niagara of Ohio" and predicted it would become famous abroad, by the early 1900s the High Bridge Glens had faded into obscurity, ultimately leaving behind little evidence that it ever existed at all.

Book Historical Schools of Latimer County Oklahoma

Download or read book Historical Schools of Latimer County Oklahoma written by Nadine Walker and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a historical record of schools from the late 1800's to contemporary times in Latimer County in Southeastern Oklahoma. It contains pictures from past generations and describes the hard times of the settlers and indigenous peoples of that part of Oklahoma. It tells the stories of their lives and the lives of their children through letters, articles and pictures taken of simple schools, churches and homes. It was a time of basic living and arduous labor in the local coal mines, and on farms and ranches. While lives were often tempered by the elements of nature, it only toughened the resolve of early settlers and Indians that helped build the great American Heartland.
