Book excerpt: The HouseBy Eugene FieldEverybody's house is better made by his neighbors. This philosophical utterance occurs in one of those black-letter volumes which I purchased with the money left me by my Aunt Susan (of blessed memory!). Even if Alice and I had not fully made up our minds, after nineteen years of planning and figuring, what kind of a house we wanted, we could have referred the important matter to our neighbors in the confident assurance that these amiable folk were much more intimately acquainted with our needs and our desires than we ourselves were. The utter disinterestedness of a neighbor qualifies him to judge dispassionately of your requirements. When he tells you that you ought to do so and so or ought to have such and such a thing, his counsel should be heeded, because the probabilities are that he has made a careful We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: "The House: An Episode in the Lives of Reuben Baker, Astronomer, and of His Wife, Alice" by Eugene Field is written as a biography of the titular couple. The story that Mr. Field has told portrays his genius and his humor in a new light. We have seen him scattering the germs of his wit broadcast in the newspapers but only in the story of "The House" do we find his humor so gently turned, so deftly put, and so ripe for the purpose of literary expression. This book is a relatable and witty story that will suck readers in and entertain from start to finish.

Book excerpt: The Works of Eugene Field is a collection of poetry and essays by American author Eugene Field, originally published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1896 under the title The Writings in Prose and Verse of Eugene Field. Known for his children's poetry, especially the light-hearted "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," Field was a journalist who found his niche in poetry and humor writing. The original collection, published after Field's death and including artwork and letters from the author, is a charming set of books compiling all his works. Republished here for young readers and collectors of Americana, The Works of Eugene Field is sure to delight audiences young and old. Volume VIII of this twelve-volume set, The House: An Episode in the Lives of Reuben Baker, Astronomer, and of His Wife Alice, is a rather long short story that was thought to be a fictional autobiography of the author. Unfortunately, Field died with one chapter still left to write, so it remains unfinished. This volume also includes a short Introduction from journalist and fiction writer Joel Chandler Harris. EUGENE FIELD (1850-1895) was an American author known for his humorous essays and children's poetry. Interested in many subjects and unable to decide what to do with his life, Field attended three colleges-Williams College, Knox College, and University of Missouri-tried his hand at acting, law, and journalism, and traveled Europe before meeting his wife and becoming city editor for the St. Joseph Gazette in St. Joseph, Missouri. He wrote and edited for several newspapers, establishing himself as a humor writer and publishing poetry. He died of a heart-attack at 45.
