Book The Hour of All Things and Other Plays

Download or read book The Hour of All Things and Other Plays written by Caridad Svich and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four plays by playwright/theatre-maker Caridad Svich (OBIE for Lifetime Achievement) - The Hour of All Things, The Breath of Stars, Upon the Fragile Shore and Agua de luna (psalms for the rouge) - explore the rough and necessary waters of citizenship under the effects of globalization and threads of human connection across multiple geographic landscapes. The Hour of All Things tells the story of an ordinary person trying to figure out how to take a stand against systemic oppression; The Breath of Stars is a radical, atomized reconfiguration of Shakespeare's The Tempest seen through the lens of global capitalism in the digital age. Upon the Fragile Shore spans the stories of individuals in eighteen countries to focus on human-made environmental and human tragedies and their effects. Agua de luna (psalms for the rouge) looks at the tough and tender lives of immigrants and their adult children in Detroit as they struggle to relocate the power of myth in their everyday lives. With an introduction by Welsh playwright and director Ian Rowlands and essays by practitioners Zac Kline, Blair Baker, Neil Scharnick, Carla Melo and Sherrine Azab, this wide-ranging, daring collection of plays refuses to settle the complex and thorny questions of existence.

Book Time s Up and Other Plays

Download or read book Time s Up and Other Plays written by Lance Lee and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-09-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lance Lee’s plays explore the moral dilemmas we face creating lives of coherence and value today with a poetic intensity that transforms theatrical practice. In Time’s Up a man and a woman treat the audience as their marriage counselors as they face the world nakedly. The last ‘fox’ turns the tables on a sex queen ‘huntress’ and her slavish ‘hound’ to survive as an individual in Fox, Hound, and Huntress. A thinker commits suicide in Gambits, while a veteran fire fighter confronts the same millennial emptiness saving anything that comes his way, including the man’s young wife from a murder charge. Rasputin is a Socratic demi-urge whose drive for self realization destroys Russia and opens the door to the greatest modern disaster, in Rasputin. Some of these started at the Eugene O’Neill Memorial Theatre National Playwrights Conference or through support from the Rockefeller Foundation through the Office for Advanced Drama Research: both Fox, Hound and Huntress and Time’s Up are included here from earlier publications.

Late one winter afternoon, professor George Clare knocks on his neighbor’s door with terrible news: he returned from work to find his wife, Catherine, murdered in their bed. Someone took an ax to her head while their three-year-old daughter, Franny, played alone in her room across the hall. As one dark secret peels away to reveal others—and as the Clare marriage reveals itself to have a sinister darkness that rivals the farm’s history—Elizabeth Brundage offers a rich and complex portrait of the scars that can haunt a community for generations and the dark longings inside each and every one of us that drive us to do inexplicable things.

Book All Things to All People Confessions of a Rebellious Preacher s Son

Download or read book All Things to All People Confessions of a Rebellious Preacher s Son written by Begees McFree and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Things to All People is an introverted narrative penned by the son of a Gospel preacher and his alter ego, Begees McFree. This playfully written autobiography of a simple, quiet, and peaceable man guides the reader through depression-induced insomniac confessions. Looking deep into the often-hidden places of the heart and mind, these confessions freed the writer from lies and misunderstandings that had been buried deep within. All Things to All People shares the spiritual struggle of a man after a divorce broke apart his life and separated him from his children. Begees uses freewriting to disentangle his poor choices from his good intentions, gaining more selfcontrol and growing closer to God while strenuously pushing unbelief out of his mind.

Book The Witching Hour and Other Plays

Download or read book The Witching Hour and Other Plays written by Nina Sadur and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nina Sadur, the playwright, occupies a prominent place in the Soviet/Russian drama pantheon of the 1980s and 1990s, a group that has with few exceptions been generally ignored by the Western literary establishment. The plays included in this volume offer some of Sadur's most influential works for the theater to the English-speaking audience for the first time. The collection will appeal to readers interested in Russian literature and culture, Russian theater, as well as women's literature. Sadur's plays are inspired by symbolist drama, the theater of the absurd and Russian folklore, yet are also infused with contemporary reality and populated by contemporary characters. Her work is overtly gynocentric: the fictional world construes women's traditionally downplayed concerns as narratively and existentially central and crucial. Sadur's drama has exerted a tremendous influence on contemporary Russian literature. Working essentially in isolation, Sadur was able to combine the early twentieth century dramatic discourse with that of the late Soviet era. Having built a bridge between the two eras, Sadur prepared the rise of the new Russian drama of the 2000s.

Book Our Brief Hours of Play

Download or read book Our Brief Hours of Play written by J.S. Cromartie and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Brief Hours of Play is the story of two young people attempting to navigate the unsettled currents of adolescent friendship. Told in the format of two separate journals, the novel begins when Mark, a rather sheltered upper middle-class“jock, rescues a mysterious classmate of his named Misha from a pool because somehow at 14, she does not know how to swim. In offering to teach her, Mark becomes intrigued by her enigmatic view of life. Her subtle quips add to the mystery: "It costs nothing if you've got nothing to lose." Mark longs for their friendship to become something more, but Misha responds, "no, please, just be my friend. That way I don't lose you." Their friendship blossoms until the fall when they must go their separate ways–he to a private high school, she to a large urban school. Although this puts a strain on any time together, their relationship continues until one day Misha simply disappears. Months later, their paths cross again, but the encounter is stilted and awkward until Mark discovers why. Finding her journal accidently left in his car, he reads it and learns about the desperate world Misha is a part of, where she has experienced abandonment, eviction, sexual assault, and where even now, she is considering suicide. Mark attempts to rescue her again, but the effort this time is far more difficult than diving into a pool. Mark must learn to live with ambiguity and loss, even as Misha seemingly disappears from his life again. Ultimately the story is about a hard-won hope, and the miracle of a friendship that stands the test of time.
