Fourth pupil Come, Teigne, what is the old book's meaning when it says that there are sheep that drop their lambs in November? Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Verdict of Time Time, with his hour-glass and scythe, is symbolized as a destructive force only, whereas time is constructive. We sug gest a new figure to take the place of the familiar old man with the scythe. We would leave him his hour-glass, and borrow ing from the blindfolded Goddess of Justice her scales, would place them in his other hand instead of the scythe. We would then have the true figure of Time, measuring with one hand the passing hours, and with the other weighing in the balance and testing the value of all the changing institutions and usages of human society. A great American thinker expressed this in another way when he said, I appeal to the centuries against the hours. The processes of time are slow. We seem to be making little progress along a toilsome way. Presently we gain an eminence, a dividing ridge, and look back. Then we realize how far we have progressed. We have reached such a dividing ridge of time in the his tory of a Philadelphia institution. The practical question is, How shall we get the verdict of time upon the worth and work of an institution of our own city Philadelphia has been characterized, and, we believe, injured by self-depreciation. We are inclined to think more of the same man or the same thing in one of certain other cities than we are when he or it happens to be of or in Philadelphia. Personal modesty is a beautiful thing, but we confess to being a believer in strong local pride. In this case we shall, how ever, appeal for judgment to an impartial judge, one that sweeps away all passing human enthusiasms or prejudices, and inexorably renders his decision. The verdict of time upon a human institution can only be obtained by the careful record of the results that it has accomplished within a given period, and by the voices of the great influential elements that make up human society. Book Bearing an Hourglass

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Del Rey
  • Release : 1985-09-12
  • ISBN : 0345313151
  • Pages : 381 pages

Download or read book Bearing an Hourglass written by Piers Anthony and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 1985-09-12 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like On a Pale Horse, this second, complete-in-itself novel of the Incarnations of Immortality is a richly imagined and always fascinating story. And again, Piers Anthony adds to his gripping plot a serious, though-provoking study of good and evil. When life seemed pointless to Norton, he accepted the position as the Incarnation of Time, even though it meant living backward from present to past. The other seemily all-powerful Incarnates of Immortality—Death, Fate, War, and Nature—made him welcome. Even Satan greeted him with gifts. But he soon discovered that the gifts were cunning traps. While he had been distracted, he had become enmeshed in a complex scheme of the Evil One to destroy all that was good. In the end, armed with only the Hourglass, Norton was forced to confront the immense power of Satan directly. And though Satan banished him to Hell, he was resolved to fight on.

Book Classic Writings in Law and Society

Download or read book Classic Writings in Law and Society written by A. Javier Trevino and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of outstanding essays by contemporary scholars and specialists on classic writings in law and society. This second edition expands the previous volume by adding additional statements. Included are commentaries on Edward A. Ross’s Social Control: A Survey of the Foundations of Order, Karl N. Llewellyn’s Jurisprudence: Realism in Theory and Practice, Jerome Frank’s Law and the Modern Mind, Leon Petrazycki’s Law and Morality, and Karl Renner’s The Institutions of Private Law and their Social Functions. The goal of Classic Writings in Law and Society is to acquaint a new generation of students with classic writings by diverse social and legal scholars—ranging from Henry Sumner Maine, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., and Hans Kelsen to Eugen Ehrlich, Nicholas S. Timasheff, and Richard Quinney. This work continues to demonstrate their contemporary theoretical relevance. Accordingly, each chapter speaks of the scholars’ work in general, how the particular book under consideration fits into that corpus, and how the book is assessed in a present day context. These essays have a clear relation to the "classic" tradition in sociolegal thought. Reading the classics is useful in gaining a better understanding and appreciation of the essential foundation for a post-classic approach in law and social inquiry—an approach that can be found in such orientations as critical legal studies, chaos theory in law, and legal semiotics. Classic Writings in Law and Society includes commentaries that consider early writings that set the standard for the social scientific approach in examining issues of law and punishment, social control, joint stock companies, business firms and nation-states in the study of law and society.
