Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1910, an armed gang of Latvian revolutionaries attempted to rob a jeweller's shop in Houndsditch, in the City of London. In their escape, they killed three policemen and crippled another two. After a manhunt of nearly three weeks, police were tipped off by an informant that two of the gang were hiding in a house in Sidney Street, in London's East End. So began the siege and a gun-battle involving both the police and the army, and more controversially Home Secretary Winston Churchill, which ended with a burning house and two dead gunmen. The final twist was to come with the release of the man who killed three English policemen and lived to become a mass murderer under Lenin and Stalin as head of the all-powerful Soviet Cheka. Donald Rumbelow has drawn upon rare documentary and eyewitness material, including files unavailable to previous historians, to present a lucid and exciting account of these extraordinary events and of the trial that followed. The result is all the more remarkable when one realises that the author rescued all the contemporary police documents and photographs about this case from destruction.

Book The Battle against Anarchist Terrorism

Download or read book The Battle against Anarchist Terrorism written by Richard Bach Jensen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first global history of the secret diplomatic and police campaign that was waged against anarchist terrorism from 1878 to the 1920s. Anarchist terrorism was at that time the dominant form of terrorism and for many continued to be synonymous with terrorism as late as the 1930s. Ranging from Europe and the Americas to the Middle East and Asia, Richard Bach Jensen explores how anarchist terrorism emerged as a global phenomenon during the first great era of economic and social globalization at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries and reveals why some nations were so much more successful in combating this new threat than others. He shows how the challenge of dealing with this new form of terrorism led to the fundamental modernization of policing in many countries and also discusses its impact on criminology and international law.

Book excerpt: In the years since the 7/7 attacks on the London transport system, many people in Britain seem to have become convinced that we live in uniquely dangerous times and that the threat from terrorism has never been greater. In fact, terrorist attacks have been a feature of life in London for many years. The worst terrorist bombing in the capital before 7/7 took place in 1867, when twelve people were killed in an explosion in Clerkenwell. The first person to be killed by a bombing on the Tube died in 1897. From the deadly Fenian campaign against high-profile targets in the capital to the Anarchist bombing of the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century London saw a constant succession of terrorist threats. This book details the emergence of modern terrorism, a phenomenon which has its roots in Victorian London.
