Book Immunological Perspectives of a Host parasite System

Download or read book Immunological Perspectives of a Host parasite System written by Carl A. Boswell and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The host snail Biomphalaria glabrata and the parasitic trematode Schistosoma mansoni are valuable subjects for studies evaluating and defining immunological parameters that determine the outcome of individual host-parasite encounters. In this thesis, both soluble and cellular components of the snail's hemolymph were examined to gain insight into the basis for resistance and susceptibility to the parasite. Because agglutinins have antibody-like activity (e.g. agglutinate particles with appropriate surface ligands, some have been found on cell surfaces) they are considered by many to be immunoglobulin analogs. An agglutinin was isolated from snail plasma, its physicochemical properties defined, and its possible role in the snail-parasite interaction examined. The presence of additional agglutinins is inferred from cross-adsorption experiments. It is known that the plant lectin concanavalin A binds to the surface of both hemocytes and sporocysts. I therefore tested the hypothesis that bringing hemocytes from susceptible (compatible) snails into contact with sporocysts in the presence of a cross-linking, or "bridging", reagent would result in sporocyst killing. Data are presented showing that indeed sporocyst death increased dramatically when such an encounter occurred. While hemocyte cytotoxicity is induced by Con A treatment of sporocysts, further investigation revealed that bridging between the target and effector does not appear to be the inducing mechanism. It is suggested that Con A treatment of sporocysts causes them to reveal surface markers that normally benign hemocytes recognize as foreign, which then triggers a cytotoxic reaction by the hemocytes. These results are discussed in the context of lectin-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity reported for murine cytotoxic T-lymphocytes. Studies of this type will lead to greater understanding of host-parasite immunobiology and of the evolutionary origins of the vertebrate immune system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Nancy Beckage and I first met in Lynn Riddiford's laboratory at the University of Washington in the mid 1970s, the fields of parasitology, behavior, and endocrinology were thriving and far-flung--disciplines in no serious danger of intersecting. There were rumors that they might have some common ground: Behavioural Aspects of Parasite Transmission (Canning and Wright, 1972) had just emerged, with exciting news not only of the way parasites themselves behave, but also of Machiavellian worms that caused intermediate hosts to shift fundamental responses to light and disturbance, becoming in the process more vulnerable to predation by the next host (Holmes and Bethel, 1972). Meanwhile, biologists such as Miriam Rothschild (see Dedication), G. B. Solomon (1969), and Lynn Riddiford herself (1975) had suggested that the endocrinological rami of parasitism might be subtle and pervasive. In general, however, para fications sites were viewed as aberrant organisms, perhaps good for a few just-so stories prior to turning our attention once again to real animals. In the decade that followed, Pauline Lawrence (1986a,b), Davy Jones (Jones et al. , 1986), Nancy Beckage (Beckage, 1985; Beckage and Templeton, 1986), and others, including many in this volume, left no doubt that the host-parasite combination in insect systems was physiologically distinct from its unparasitized counterpart in ways that went beyond gross pathology.

Book Parasitic and Related Diseases

Download or read book Parasitic and Related Diseases written by Thomas C. Cheng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of parasites and their interactions with hosts continues to represent a challenging area of modern biology. The availability of new techniques and instrumentation, coupled with the development of daring new hypotheses and concepts, has paved the way for the dramatic evolution of parasitology from a static descriptive endeavor to a dynamic one based on biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology, and modern cell biology. Studies of this nature obviously fall within the domain of pathobiology. Consequently, when the contributions included in this volume of Comparative PathobioZogy were offered to this series. after critical review, we welcomed the opportunity to make them available to the scientific community. The contributions included herein represent presentations delivered before enthusiastic audiences at three different symposia, all held in 1983. The first, entitled "Some Aspects of Modern Parasitology", was organized by Dr. Gary E. Rodrick of the University of South Florida and myself on behalf of the American Society of Zoologists. The chapters by C. E. Carter and B. M. Wickwire. B. J. Bogitsh, and W. M. Kemp were originally presented at that symposium. The second symposium. organized by Dr. G. Balouet of the Faculte de Medecine, Brest, France, and myself on behalf,of the Society for Invertebrate Pathology, was entitled "Cellular Reactions in Invertebrates." The chapters by G. Balouet and M. Poder and M. Brehelin were originally presented at this symposium.

Book Biomphalaria Snails and Larval Trematodes

Download or read book Biomphalaria Snails and Larval Trematodes written by Rafael Toledo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of the biology of the planorbid snail Biomphalaria glabrata mainly as related to the snail’s role as a host of larval trematodes . This snail is of great importance in medical and economic zoology as a vector of important trematode (fluke) diseases in human and veterinary medicine and in wildlife biology. Moreover, this snail is a useful model for numerous basic studies in biology and chemistry. A book that provides modern coverage of diverse topics from the molecule to the community of this snail as related to larval trematode parasitism is not available. This book should appeal to a wide audience of biologists, ecologists, biochemists, malacologists, parasitologists, public health workers, epidemiologists, and graduate and advanced undergraduate students in biomedical and allied health sciences.
