Book The Horseshoe Colonel

Download or read book The Horseshoe Colonel written by Alexander Fyffe Brandau III and published by New Haven Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonel John Williams was everything Andrew Jackson was not: tall, handsome, and articulate in the courtroom or with his quill pen. Jackson defeated him three times but he never gave up and died on the way back to D.C. trying to prevent the Trail of Tears. Without him there would have been no Jackson. Six generations of the Williams family now break their silence and tell their side of the story. Cautioned by Jackson supporters on the Senate floor to fear the General he replied, "You tell the General that if he challenges me I shall pick rifles at twenty paces and shoot him between the eyes where he cannot pad with paper." Dolly Madison called him the Chesterfield of the Senate and Simone Bolivar nicknamed him "the elegant gentleman." Did he and his family cause Jackson to lose the Presidency in 1824? He said "there was no 'Corrupt Bargain'"and he wrote a book that was "suppressed by the Party." He was written out of history. I send you here a little book, For you to look upon, Where you may see a Hero's face when he is past and gone. -John Williams in The Political Mirror

"Not so badly as we thought at first, Mr. Robinson," was the reply. "I am much obliged to you for coming over to-night. It is a great comfort to have your advice in such times." "These little shavers are so venturesome-with horses in particular," said the visitor; "it's Providence, Colonel, takes care of 'em. Let me look at you, my son," he continued, as he removed the bed-clothes, and began to handle the shoulder of the boy. "He's got it out of joint," he added, after a moment. "Get me a basin of hot[...]".

Book Dark Horse

Download or read book Dark Horse written by Larry Spencer and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gen. Larry O. Spencer, USAF (Ret.), was born and raised on the Horseshoe--a tough inner-city street in southeast Washington D.C. Both parents lived in the rural south under Jim Crow and "separate but equal" laws. Spencer's father was a career Army soldier who lost his left hand during the Korean War, suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, and worked two jobs. His mother completed tenth grade, had no driver's license, and was left alone during the week to raise their six children. The Horseshoe was a hard neighborhood where fights were common, and the school systems were second-rate. The expectations of living in an all-Black neighborhood were to be good at sports while shunning academic prowess. Spencer met those expectations: he struggled in school, but teachers who did not want to see him repeat their class would pass him to the next grade. That environment resulted in poor self-esteem and a bleak outlook for the future. Quite by chance, Spencer enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he continued to struggle with the racial turmoil of the 1970s. A senior non-commissioned officer saw promise in Spencer and guided him to obtain a college degree and apply for Officer Training School where he excelled. As a very young first lieutenant, he was assigned to a tough job in the Pentagon, but Spencer earned an early reputation as a fast burner. In 1990 he took command of a squadron that won accolades and awards for their performance during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Spencer went on to serve at the White House, and then successfully commanded a Group and a Wing before being assigned as the chief financial officer (comptroller) for Air Combat Command, the largest command in the Air Force. During that assignment, Spencer was promoted to brigadier general and was tasked to set up a new Directorate at Air Force Materiel Command. Spencer later returned to the Pentagon where he led Air Force Budget. He ultimately became the Air Force's thirty-seventh vice chief of staff, making him one of only nine African Americans promoted to four stars. Spencer concludes his historic climb with life lessons learned on his journey from the inner city to the Pentagon.

Book excerpt: Tohopeka contains a variety of perspectives and uses a wide array of evidence and approaches, from scrutiny of cultural and religious practices to literary and linguistic analysis, to illuminate this troubled period. Almost two hundred years ago, the territory that would become Alabama was both ancient homeland and new frontier where a complex network of allegiances and agendas was playing out. The fabric of that network stretched and frayed as the Creek Civil War of 1813-14 pitted a faction of the Creek nation known as Red Sticks against those Creeks who supported the Creek National Council. The war began in July 1813, when Red Stick rebels were attacked near Burnt Corn Creek by Mississippi militia and settlers from the Tensaw area in a vain attempt to keep the Red Sticks’ ammunition from reaching the main body of disaffected warriors. A retaliatory strike against a fortified settlement owned by Samuel Mims, now called Fort Mims, was a Red Stick victory. The brutality of the assault, in which 250 people were killed, outraged the American public and “Remember Fort Mims” became a national rallying cry. During the American-British War of 1812, Americans quickly joined the war against the Red Sticks, turning the civil war into a military campaign designed to destroy Creek power. The battles of the Red Sticks have become part of Alabama and American legend and include the famous Canoe Fight, the Battle of Holy Ground, and most significantly, the Battle of Tohopeka (also known as Horseshoe Bend)—the final great battle of the war. There, an American army crushed Creek resistance and made a national hero of Andrew Jackson. New attention to material culture and documentary and archaeological records fills in details, adds new information, and helps disabuse the reader of outdated interpretations. Contributors Susan M. Infantry, on Duty in the Philippine Islands, and the Lieutenant Lawrence Gill, A. D. C. To the Military Governor of Puerto Rico As I read and read again the following correspond ence between two inconspicuous actors in some of the stirring events that have marked the closing year, my impression that these letters constitute a document of history almost indispensable for the understanding of the new era, which began with the Treaty of Paris, grew into a settled conviction. Strong in this belief I spared no effort, and have at last been successful in over coming the natural reluctance of those to whom the letters were addressed, to seeing words, which were written for the information and the consolation of a narrow circle of family and friends, laid bare to the colder scrutiny of the greater public.
