This book was released on 2017-04-23 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Horseman in the Sky; A Watcher by the Dead; The Man and the Snake No country is so wild and difficult but men will make it a theatre of war; concealed in the forest at the bottom of that military rat-trap, in which half a hundred men in possession of the exits might have starved an army to submission, lay five regiments of Federal infantry. They had marched all the previous day and night and were resting. At nightfall they would take to the road again, climb to the place where their unfaithful sentinel now slept, and descending the other slope of the ridge fall upon a camp of the enemy at about midnight. Their hope was to surprise it, for the road led to the rear of it. In case of failure, their position would be perilous in the extreme; and fail they surely would should accident or vigilance apprise the enemy of the movement. Book excerpt: On a warm afternoon in the fall of 1861 Carter Druse is on picket duty on top of a cliff overlooking a valley where five regiments of the Union army are resting. The enemy is near, and the Union force means to surprise them in the night unless “accident or vigilance” forewarns them. Druse had been sleeping but wakes to see a man on a horse surveying the activity in the valley below. He sights his rifle, but hesitates when the rider turns and seems to look straight at him. In a crisis of conscience, Druse questions where his duty lies. Book A Son of the Gods and a Horseman in the Sky

Download or read book A Son of the Gods and a Horseman in the Sky written by Ambrose Ambrose Bierce and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year: 1861. The place: A cliff overlooking a forested valley in the western part of Virginia. The event: The American Civil War. A Union Soldier named Carter Druse is posted at his sentry site on this particularly sunny afternoon. It is the kind of summer day in Dixie that can easily send a siren song to anyone, anywhere, serving any duty to lie down and rest. So restful is Druse that anyone observing him prostrate as he was would have assumed--considering the circumstances--that he was dead. It was much worse than that, of course. He had committed a crime far worse than death: falling asleep on guard duty. Had he been so discovered, he would soon know both the sin and the punishment since a breach of regulations could only justifiably be disciplined through execution. The story is divided into sections and Part I is primarily descriptive prose outlining the topographical features of the setting and how those features are essential to the dramatic tension marking the narrative trek. The central element of this narrative trek is the strategic implementation by the Union forces to send somewhere between five and ten thousand men currently hidden from sight by the Confederate forces occupying the ridges bordering either side of the forest valley. Victory is almost assured provided the Union troops can maintain the element of surprise: it's a simple ambush. The tricky part is that maintenance of the surprise element. And a sentry falling asleep on duty is most assuredly not a helpful tactic.

Download or read book Horseman Pass By written by Larry McMurtry and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Lonesome Dove comes the novel that became the basis for the film Hud, starring Paul Newman. In classic Western style Larry McMurtry illustrates the timeless conflict between the modernity and the Old West through the eyes of Texas cattlemen. Horseman, Pass By tells the story of Homer Bannon, an old-time cattleman who epitomizes the frontier values of honesty and decency, and Hud, his unscrupulous stepson. Caught in the middle is the narrator, Homer's young grandson Lonnie, who is as much drawn to his grandfather’s strength of character as he is to Hud's hedonism and materialism. When first published in 1961, Horseman, Pass By caused a sensation in Texas literary circles for its stark, realistic portrayal of the struggles of a changing West in the years following World War II. Never before had a writer managed to encapsulate its environment with such unsentimental realism. Today, memorable characters, powerful themes, and illuminating detail make Horseman, Pass By vintage McMurtry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ambrose Bierce's short story collection, A Son of the Gods, and A Horseman in the Sky, offers a glimpse into the writer's trademark cynical and darkly humorous style. Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, Bierce explores themes of war, fate, and morality in a way that is both thought-provoking and unsettling. Through vivid descriptions and sharp dialogue, Bierce's writing showcases his mastery of the short story form and his ability to evoke a sense of unease in the reader. The collection is a prime example of Bierce's distinctive voice and his unique perspective on the human experience. Ambrose Bierce, a veteran of the Civil War himself, drew inspiration from his own experiences and observations of the conflict to create these haunting and memorable stories. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all. Ana da Silva always assumed she'd die young, but she never expected it to be at the hands of the haunting immortal who spared her life years ago. Famine. If there's one thing Famine is good at, it's cruelty. He can't forget the pain humanity has brought him, and he's ready to bring it back to them tenfold. But when Ana, a ghost from his past, corners him for what he did to her, she and her empty threats captivate him, and he decides to keep her around. In spite of themselves, Ana and Famine are drawn to each other. But at the end of the day, the two are enemies. Nothing changes that. Not one kind act, not two. And definitely not a few steamy nights. But enemies or reluctant lovers, if they don't stop themselves soon, heaven will.

Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevensonwho understood a thing or two about the selves we refuse to knowonce said I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. Surely it was the likelihood of an accident, the unparalleled joy of stumbling upon himself now and then, which Stevenson most cherished in the going. A bit like Stevenson, Bart Reitter is a man who revels in the great distance between here and there. His memoir The Horseman is a wonderful account of the selves forged and found during his travels across the first half of a lifetimea heartfelt testament to the wisdom of refusing to stand still. --Professor Greg Coln Semenza, University of Connecticut For those who have ever spent time on the road for a living this book will awaken memoriessome fond, some downright scary. Its the diary of a young man plying his trade as he jets around the world while climbing the corporate ladder. Bart Reitter writes in exacting detail. A delightful read. --Thomas J. Gibbons Jr. Retired Staff Writer, Philadelphia Inquirer The Horseman is an excellent story about one mans travels. The book drew me in and I found myself reading longer than I had allowed for. Reitters enthusiasm for travel has rekindled my own excitement for the many business trips I have planned for this year. --Rich Dibernardo, President, Initech, LLC Reading The Horseman brought back fond memories of my travels with Bart. I also have been infected with the travel bug and the cure is to get me on the next flight to anywhere. --John Lin, Senior Territory Sales Manager For author Bart Reitter, the journey is the destination. In this travelogue, he narrates his lifelong journey of discovery through travel. Written with stark clarity and emotional honesty, The Horseman begins with a six-year-old boys first joyful trip to Disney World and concludes with a 26,000-mile circumnavigation of the globe. Compiled from journals kept while traveling the world and interwoven with personal reflection and unique historical perspective, The Horseman voyages through the joys and frustration of global travel as well as the introspection aimed at understanding lifes meaning. It presents an emotional, scientific, funny, and irreverent window into Reitters mind as he seeks to understand the insatiable wanderlust that drives him forward. From the eastern United States to Singapore, and from the streets of Paris to the jungles of Thailand, Reitter communicates a unique point of view of life on the road that pictures rarely tell. From the euphoria of successful business deals to the loneliness of sterile hotel rooms, the story is never boring. In the end, with the help of his daughters, he discovers the best journey of all is the journey home.
