Book The Horse and Dog Not as They Are But as They Should Be

Download or read book The Horse and Dog Not as They Are But as They Should Be written by H. Sample and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse and Dog, Not as They Are, but as They Should Be: Old and Erroneous Theories Relative to the Management of the Horse Brought Face to Face With the Facts of the Nineteenth Century In undertaking the production of this work the author fully understands the gigantic task he has shouldered. There is probably no subject so extensively written upon and so little understood as the one in hand. I think the public will bear me out in the assertion that there are more balky men than balky horses. In consideration of the magnitude of the Horse interests of this country - the total valuation being seven hundred and seventy-one millions nine hundred thousand dollars, that valuation of the same number of Horses actually being one hundred percent, less than it would have been had all engaged in training and using the animal as they should. I feel positive that in this treatise I can convince every unprejudiced mind that much that has been written upon this subject by able authors is erroneous, and is not sustained by the practical experience of intelligent men of modern times, who will not take mere assertions as truth, unless it is sustained by the developments of careful and intelligent scientific and practical observation. Having devoted eighteen years of my best days in teaching the proper methods of educating the Horse, and in a field that extends from the frozen and lakey regions to the Gulf of Mexico and from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast, I feel confident that the knowledge collected will be of great service to the Horse world. Download or read book The Outermost House written by Henry Beston and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic nature memoir of Cape Cod in the early twentieth century, “written with simplicity, sympathy, and beauty” (New York Herald Tribune). When Henry Beston returned home from World War I, he sought refuge and healing at a house on the outer beach of Cape Cod. He was so taken by the natural beauty of his surroundings that his two-week stay extended into a yearlong solitary adventure. He spent his time trying to capture in words the wonders of the magical landscape he found himself in thrall to. In The Outermost House, Beston chronicles his experiences observing the migrations of seabirds, the rhythms of the tide, the windblown dunes, and the scatter of stars in the changing summer sky. Beston argued: “The world today is sick to its thin blood for the lack of elemental things, for fire before the hands, for water, for air, for the dear earth itself underfoot.” Nearly a century after publication, Beston’s words are more true than ever.

Dasha was born at the behest of the gods, her mother’s pledge between the world of women and the world of spirits. The Krasnograd kremlin looks to her to rule with fire, steel, and magic, just as her Imperial foremothers did. Instead, she’s shy, retiring, and the least magically talented girl her tutors have ever seen. Now that she’s almost a woman grown, she needs to learn to harness her gifts, but all she can do is have fits and useless visions. When her father offers to take her on her first journey away from Krasnograd, Dasha jumps at the chance to see her native land. But their journey quickly turns into more than a mere pleasure trip. The wide world is more dangerous than Dasha had imagined, and her rapidly growing gifts may be the most dangerous thing in it. But Dasha is not the only danger in Zem’. War is raging on its borders, and threatens to spill into Zem’ itself. No matter which side Dasha’s people choose, they may not be able to keep their freedom and their way of life. Dasha may hold the key to protecting Zem’—but she may have to lose herself in order to save her people. Book The Killing of Crazy Horse

Download or read book The Killing of Crazy Horse written by Thomas Powers and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was the greatest Indian warrior of the nineteenth century. His victory over General Custer at the battle of Little Bighorn in 1876 was the worst defeat inflicted on the frontier Army. And the death of Crazy Horse in federal custody has remained a controversy for more than a century. The Killing of Crazy Horse pieces together the many sources of fear and misunderstanding that resulted in an official killing hard to distinguish from a crime. A rich cast of characters, whites and Indians alike, passes through this story, including Red Cloud, the chief who dominated Oglala history for fifty years but saw in Crazy Horse a dangerous rival; No Water and Woman Dress, both of whom hated Crazy Horse and schemed against him; the young interpreter Billy Garnett, son of a fifteen-year-old Oglala woman and a Confederate general killed at Gettysburg; General George Crook, who bitterly resented newspaper reports that he had been whipped by Crazy Horse in battle; Little Big Man, who betrayed Crazy Horse; Lieutenant William Philo Clark, the smart West Point graduate who thought he could “work” Indians to do the Army’s bidding; and Fast Thunder, who called Crazy Horse cousin, held him the moment he was stabbed, and then told his grandson thirty years later, “They tricked me! They tricked me!” At the center of the story is Crazy Horse himself, the warrior of few words whom the Crow said they knew best among the Sioux, because he always came closest to them in battle. No photograph of him exists today. The death of Crazy Horse was a traumatic event not only in Sioux but also in American history. With the Great Sioux War as background and context, drawing on many new materials as well as documents in libraries and archives, Thomas Powers recounts the final months and days of Crazy Horse’s life not to lay blame but to establish what happened.
