Book The Hopeless University

  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book The Hopeless University written by Richard Hall and published by Mayflybooks/Ephemera. This book was released on 2021-05-14 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hegemonic University represented in the institutions of the global North is an increasingly hopeless place. Defined against value and generation of surpluses, the University is a critical node in the social metabolic control of capital. As such, it acts to deny human agency and autonomy, forms of mutuality, and alternative life worlds, precisely because it serves to reproduce capitalist social relations. These relations foreclose upon the idea that humans might make their own history, and in fact we have been told that we are at the end of history. Here, the idea that the University exists in a closed system designed to mitigate economic risk, generates structures that constantly restructure intellectual work through joint ventures; cultures that act pathologically to dehumanise those who work in the institution; and practices that are imposed methodologically to limit the horizon of intellectual possibility. However, the intersection of crises of political economy, black and indigenous lives, climate and environment, and epidemiology, have exposed the fraud at the heart of narratives of the end of History. A range of intersecting struggles have exposed the fraud of the transhistorical inevitability that capitalism will be our operating system. In spite of the fragility of capital's social metabolic control, the University remains committed to repurposing all of social life in the name of value, by working towards employability, entrepreneurship, excellence, impact and satisfaction. The University is a critical node in the denial of History, precisely because it provides a constant funnelling of individuals into a normalised existence framed by debt and work. Faced by the realities and lived experiences of intersecting crises, the University is revealed as hopeless, because: first, it has become a place that has no socially-useful role beyond the reproduction of capital, and has become an anti-human project devoid of hope; and second, it is unable to respond meaningfully with crises that erupt from the contradictions of capital. Thus. in its maintenance of business-as-usual, the University remains shaped as a tactical response to these contradictions.

Book The Hopeless Romantic s Handbook

Download or read book The Hopeless Romantic s Handbook written by Gemma Townley and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2008-11-26 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knight wanted. Must have shiny armor and own horse, preferably white. When it comes to romance, are magic, fireworks, and a dashing knight in shining Armani really too much to ask? Apparently so, since Kate Hetherington has yet to find an appropriate mate in all of London. Her lifelong friends (and confirmed pragmatists) Sally and Tom tease her endlessly about her hopeless romanticism. But Kate knows that she’s right to want her own fairy tale. After stumbling upon an old tome titled The Hopeless Romantic’s Handbook, Kate decides to give its advice a whirl. Incredibly, the book lives up to its money-back guarantee, because before Kate can say “Cinderella” she meets Joe Rogers, a drop-dead-gorgeous American actor. Frankly, he’s perfect–and Kate thinks she might have finally found The One. He certainly has the muscles required to sweep her off her feet. But Sal and Tom are less thrilled with Kate’s dreamboat. Are they just jealous, or do they know something about love that isn’t in Kate’s handbook? Kate’s pretty sure that finding true love isn’t supposed to alienate you from your friends, but what she doesn’t know is that her real knight is still waiting for her–and he’s closer than she ever imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After receiving a certain and imminent death sentence from untreatable cancer on Christmas Eve, I was faced with absolute hopelessness. Only in desperation could I find the understanding I needed to witness a season of miracles and intimacy with a God that I took for granted so many years. Within this book are the events and newfound realities that broke the grip of a cancer which had never been beaten by medical science, and the invaluable life lessons birthed in moments of intimacy with the Holy Spirit during that battle. I truly believe there is something for everyone contained within. Miracles are the very glue of the Bible. The miracle of creation opens the book, followed by a multitude of examples of our Heavenly Father intervening supernaturally for His people, all the way to the return of our Savior. Unless God has changed, a concept both the Scripture and theology vehemently reject, miracles are still available and prevalent today. Why are you not seeing the supernatural in your life? Why does fear have such a strong grip on you? What can you do to change those truths? The answers are found within.

Book The Oasis of Filth Part 2 The Hopeless Pastures

Download or read book The Oasis of Filth Part 2 The Hopeless Pastures written by Keith Soares and published by Bufflegoat Books. This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I didn't care anymore, not after what happened at The Oasis… and afterward. I just walked, not concerned if I'd live or die. Strange how things change. How a little house, a dog, and a total stranger worked their way into my heart and soul when I didn't think I had either of those things left anymore. I thought I was too old for all of it, certainly too old to care much for my own wellbeing. But the others? Having them around changed my outlook, made me protective. When new dangers appeared, having friends made me truly understand one thing: fear. ----- SPR review: 5 stars "While a book about outcasts banding together may seem as overdone a trope as zombie fiction itself, once again I have to assure anyone reading this that the author, Keith Soares, is in all ways a step above those expectations in his ideas and his execution... I don't recommend reading this book; I recommend reading every book this author publishes, as I have no doubt he will continue raising the bar." IndieReader review: 4.5 stars "Soares paints a frightening, realistic picture of life in a post-apocalyptic world... It’s refreshing to read a book in this vein that allows the reader to explore a protagonist’s anguish without relying on a flat, twenty-something hero." "This book should come with a warning: You will not be going anywhere for a while once you read the first chapter." "'The Hopeless Pastures' is a worthy sequel to 'The Oasis of Filth' — a story that stands on its own, but also expertly sets up the final chapter to this compelling series." "Boy does the author deliver. The dramatic arcs of the story are like riding a great rollercoaster." "Soares does a masterful job of making the situations and outcomes seem eerily plausible, which heightens the creepiness factor and suspense immensely for me."
