Book The Hoosier Hot Shots And My Friend Gabe

Download or read book The Hoosier Hot Shots And My Friend Gabe written by Dick Stodghill and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-11 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the height of the Great Depression three fun-loving young musicians from the flatlands of Central Indiana began broadcasting a fifteen minute daily radio show on WOWO in Fort Wayne. Veterans of the vaudeville circuits, they performed without pay to promote local appearances for $15 per night. The show quickly drew a large following and this led to an opportunity to join the WLS National Barn Dance in Chicago. Their happy, sometimes zany antics proved to be exactly what a Depression-weary country needed. The line that began many of their songs, "Are you ready, Hezzie?" became part of the American lexicon. The Hoosier Hot Shots went on to make hundreds of phongraph records, appear in 22 movies and have their own nationwide radio show. This account of their boy-makes-good lives includes more than 80 photos, illustrations, letters written by one of the original Hot Shots, movie highlights, a discography and more.

Book Ladies of the Western

Download or read book Ladies of the Western written by Michael G. Fitzgerald and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work features interviews with 51 leading ladies who starred in B-westerns, A-westerns, and television westerns. Some were well-known and others were not, but they all have fascinating stories to tell and they talk candidly about their careers and the many difficulties that went along with their jobs. Back then, conditions were often severe, locations were often harsh, and pay was often minimal. The actresses were sometimes the only females on location and they had to provide their own wardrobe and do their own make-up, as well as discourage the advances of over-affectionate co-stars. Despite these difficulties, most of the women interviewed for this agree that they had fun. Claudia Barrett, Virginia Carroll, Francis Dee, Lisa Gaye, Marie Harmon, Kathleen Hughes, Linda Johnson, Ruta Lee, Colleen Miller, Gigi Perreau, Ann Rutherford, Ruth Terry, and June Vincent are among the 51 actresses interviewed.

Book Mike Barry and the Kentucky Irish American

Download or read book Mike Barry and the Kentucky Irish American written by Clyde F. Crews and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kentucky Irish American began life in 1898 as one of many ethnic newspapers in America, but by its final years it attracted an avid national audience of many ethnicities. From 1925, the KIA was owned and edited by the Barry family of Louisville: by John J. Barry to 1950, and by his son Michael to its demise in 1968. This anthology focuses on the Mike Barry years—a time of Cold War and Vietnam, of Kennedy, Nixon, McCarthy, Goldwater, and Happy Chandler. Under Mike's brilliant editorship, the KIA offered its readers a richly textured, pungent voice that combined humor with a constant push for social improvement in Kentucky and in the nation. Always the KIA was strong in its support of all things Irish, Catholic, and American. It was also an acerbic commentator on the absurdities of Kentucky politics. But the KIA was notable—and noticed—for its strong positions on national and international issues. Red Smith once described the KIA as "all the excuse any man needs for learning to read." Today's readers can now discover the pleasures of a livelier era in journalism.

Book Sid and Marty Krofft

Book excerpt: H.R. Pufnstuf, Lidsville, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Land of the Lost: For a generation of children growing up in the late sixties and early seventies, these were some of the most memorable shows on Saturday morning television. At a time when television cartoons had lost some of their luster, two puppeteers named Sid and Marty Krofft put together a series of shows that captivated children. Using colorful sets and mysterious lands full of characters that had boundless energy, the Kroffts created a new form of children's television, rooted in the medium's earliest shows but nevertheless original in its concept. This work first provides a history of the Kroffts' pretelevision career, then offers discussions of their 11 Saturday morning shows. Complete cast and credit information is enhanced by interviews with many of the actors and actresses, behind-the-scenes information, print reviews of the series, and plot listings of the individual episodes. The H.R. Pufnstuf feature film, the brothers' other television work, and their short-lived indoor theme park are also detailed.

She went solo and in 1936 became the first female country and western singer to sell one million records with her self-penned "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart." Her career spanned eight decades, and in 1996 (also the year of her death) she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Here is the story of a tiny, blue-eyed woman who had a pioneering spirit and a big voice. Patsy Montana describes in her own words and in vivid detail her life, career, and success at a time in music history when women did not cut gold records, gold records were not even given, and Billboard did not even have a chart for western music.

Book The Encyclopedia of Women in Radio 1920 1960

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Women in Radio 1920 1960 written by Leora M. Sies and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early days of radio, there were employment opportunities for women as singers, musicians, actors, and hosts of women's interest shows, but few opportunities for them to do much more, not to mention host their own music or comedy programs. Vaughan deLeith, the "Original Radio Girl," was one of the first women to break into radio and pave the way for others to follow. It is estimated than from 1920 to 1936, deLeith received three million pieces of fan mail, wrote more than 200 published songs, made more than 300 phonograph records and Edison cylinders, and sang 15,000 songs on the air. The women who worked in and on radio in its four greatest decades are given their due in this comprehensive work. Readers will find Bertha Brainard, Judith Waller, Jessica Dragonette, Kate Smith, the Boswell Sisters, the Andrews Sisters, the Carter Sisters, Wilma Lee Cooper, Kitty Wells, Gracie Allen, and Minnie Pearl, among many, many other women who were on the radio. Nine extended entries cover pioneers, Mary Garden and Chicago radio, singers, country musicians, comediennes, husband-and-wife talk shows, women in daytime serials (soap operas), family values, and gender discrimination facing women in radio.
