Book The Honor of the Name

Download or read book The Honor of the Name written by Emile Gaboriau and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Another lovely and complicated novel by Emile Gaboriau that connects to prior works and closes a previously abandoned story with intriguing potential for continuation. Emile Gaboriau was a pivotal character in detective fiction history. He was a French journalist and author who developed the "Roman police" with a logical series of books starring private investigator Monsieur Lecoq. Lecoq is based on the memoirs of a real-life thief-turned-cop named Francois Vidocq (1775-1857). Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes vanquished Gaboriau's huge cult. Interestingly, Holmes may be modeled on another of Gaboriau's characters, the detective Father Tabaret, whose tactics Monsieur Lecoq imitated in the first Lecoq book.

By identifying moments of resistance and subversion in the texts the author argues against excessively monolithic interpretations of such discourses of containment.

Book Honor and Violence in Golden Age Spain

Download or read book Honor and Violence in Golden Age Spain written by Scott K. Taylor and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modern Spain has long been viewed as having a culture obsessed with honor, where a man resorted to violence when his or his wife's honor was threatened, especially through sexual disgrace. This book--the first to closely examine honor and interpersonal violence in the era--overturns this idea, arguing that the way Spanish men and women actually behaved was very different from the behavior depicted in dueling manuals, law books, and honor plays of the period. Drawing on criminal and other records to assess the character of violence among non-elite Spaniards, historian Scott K. Taylor finds that appealing to honor was a rhetorical strategy, and that insults, gestures, and violence were all part of a varied repertoire that allowed both men and women to decide how to dispute issues of truth and reputation.

Download or read book The Honor of the Name written by Émile Gaboriau and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-12-13 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Émile Gaboriau (November 9, 1832 - September 28, 1873) was a French writer, novelist, journalist, and a pioneer of detective fiction. His first detective novel, Monsieur Lecoq 1869, which featured an amateur detective and a young police officer (Monsieur Lecoq), was a success and the Lecoq was the hero in Gaboriau's 3 later detective novels. The character of Lecoq was based on a real-life thief turned police officer, Eugène François Vidocq (1775-1857), whose own memoirs, Les Vrais Mémoires de Vidocq, mixed fiction and fact. It may also have been influenced by the villainous Monsieur Lecoq, one of the main protagonists of Féval's Les Habits Noirs book series. Gaboriau was a pioneer and a great success in his time until Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes which diverted global attention from his Monsieur Lecoq. The story was produced on the stage in 1872. A long series of novels dealing with the annals of the police court followed, and proved very popular. Gaboriau died in Paris of pulmonary apoplexy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of George Brinton McClellan Jr., son of the Civil War general by the same name, a congressman, and mayor of New York (1904–1910), studies political courage and honor. McClellan was a Tammany Hall Democrat, who challenged the boss of Tammany Hall, Charles Francis Murphy, and put principle above party. For his disloyalty, he paid the price of political oblivion. This important figure in the modernization of the city is hardly remembered because of the power of his enemies. The study emphasizes McClellan's six years as mayor, but also covers his youth, relationship with the general, his career as a reporter, years as a congressman, and his post-political career, which included his tenure as an economics history professor at Princeton, his brief Army career during World War I, his retirement years in Washington, DC, and burial in Arlington Cemetery.
