Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Homologies of the Human Skeleton In the following pages I have endeavoured to give a brief account of the signification of the different bones composing the human skeleton, and to familiarise the mind of the Student in Anatomy with the idea that the whole body is formed of a succession of vertebral segments. The book is unsuited to those who have not previously rendered themselves well versed in elementary Osteology by the careful examination of the different bones, and by the attentive perusal of some of those excellent systems of Anatomy, which, I am happy to say, have been of late years published by our own countrymen, as well as by continental authors. Nor is it put forward as perfect of its kind, the object being simply to direct attention to those discoveries which have been worked out during the last few years, and which, commencing in the skeleton, have been extended over the nervous, the vascular, and the muscular systems. But until the signification of particular bones is more generally understood, the Science of Anatomy must remain as it is, and comprise with the useful much that is dry, unprofitable, and, in many instances, unnecessarily complicated. Book The Anatomy and Biology of the Human Skeleton

Download or read book The Anatomy and Biology of the Human Skeleton written by D. Gentry Steele and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handsome volume is the first photographically illustrated textbook to present for both the student and the working archaeologist the anatomy of the human skeleton and the study of skeletal remains from an anthropological perspective. It describes the skeleton as not just a structure, but a working system in the living body. The opening chapter introduces basics of osteology, or the study of bones, the specialized and often confusing terminology of the field, and methods for dealing scientifically with bone specimens. The second chapter covers the biology of living bone: its structure, growth, interaction with the rest of the body, and response to disease and injury. The remainder of the book is a head-to-foot, structure-by-structure, bone-by-bone tour of the skeleton. More than 400 photographs and drawings and more than 80 tables illustrate and analyze features the text describes. In each chapter structures are discussed in detail so that not only can landmarks of bones be identified, but their functions can be understood and their anomalies identified as well. Each bone's articulating partners are listed, and the sequence of ossification of each bone is presented. Descriptive sections are followed by analyses of applications: how to use specific bones to estimate age, stature, gender, biological affinities, and state of health at the time of the individual's death. Anthropologists, archaeologists, and paleontologists as well as physicians, medical examiners, anatomists, and students of these disciplines will find this an invaluable reference and textbook.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1848 edition. Excerpt: ... ON THE ARCHETYPE AND HOMOLOGIES OF THE VERTEBRATE SKELETON. Chapter I.--Special Homology. Introduction. When the structure of organized beings began to be investigated, the parts, as they were observed, were described under names or phrases suggested by their forms, proportions, relative position, or likeness to some familiar object. Much of the nomenclature of human anatomy has thus arisen, especially that of the osseous system, which, with the rest of man's frame, was studied originally from an insulated point of view, and irrespective of any other animal structure or any common type. So when the exigences of the veterinary surgeon, or the desire of the naturalist to penetrate beneath the superficial characters of his favourite class, led them to anatomise the lower animals, they, in like manner, seldom glanced beyond their immediate subject, and often gave arbitrary names to the parts which they detected. Thus the dissector of the horse, whose attention was more especially called to the leg as the most common seat of disease in that animal, specified its 'cannon-bone, ' its 'great' and 'small' pastern-bones, its 'coffin-bone, ' and its 'nut-bone' or 'coronet': some cranial bones were also named agreeably with their shape, as the 'os quadratum, ' for example. The ornithotomist described, in the same irrelative manner, the 'ossa homoidea, ' 'ossa communicantia' or 'interarticularia, ' the 'columella' and 'os furcatorium.' Petit had his 'os grele' and ' os en massue;' Herissantf his 'os carre'; which, however, is by no means the same bone with the 'os carre' or 'os quadratum' of the hippotomist. The investigator of reptilian osteology described 'hatchet-bones' and chevronbones, an 'os annulare' or 'os en ceinture, ' and an 'os transversum

Book Report on the Archetype and Homologies of the Vertebrate Skeleton

This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking work by Richard Owen, one of the leading scientists of the 19th century, lays out his theory of the archetype, a kind of ideal blueprint for the vertebrate skeleton that underlies the variations seen in different species. Owen's work was a key influence on the development of evolutionary theory, and this book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of science. Book Ontogenesis of the Skeleton and Intrinsic Muscles of the Human Hand and Foot

Download or read book Ontogenesis of the Skeleton and Intrinsic Muscles of the Human Hand and Foot written by Radomir Cihak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the present publication is to summarize the results of studies of ontogenesis of the skeleton and muscles of the human hand and foot. Our primary interest in studying the muscles arose from observations of variations, in which a new form of the anomalous muscle in the popliteal fossa had been described (Cihak, 1954; Hnevkovsky and Cihak, 1957) and in which changes of muscle forms in the congenitally malformed extremity had also been studied (Brlickova and Cihak, 1956). The desire to clarify muscle variations by means of the onto genesis led to a study of ontogenesis of single muscles. During observation of the embryonic pectoralis major special muscle bundles were primarily observed, which could be homologised with the sphincter colli muscle of lower Mammals. Further observation revealed that this muscle (concordantly with its phylo genetic development) gradually develops in the course of human ontogenesis from a small primordium to its maximal extent and becomes reduced thereafter and finally disappears, still during the embryonic period (Cihak, 1957). This study was decisive for the further development of our theme, since it demonstra tes, how consistently in the development of the locomotor apparatus the rule of recapitulation is asserted and how this can be employed in developmental studies of muscles.

Book excerpt: The paleontologist and professor of anatomy who co-discovered Tiktaalik, the “fish with hands,” tells a “compelling scientific adventure story that will change forever how you understand what it means to be human” (Oliver Sacks). By examining fossils and DNA, he shows us that our hands actually resemble fish fins, our heads are organized like long-extinct jawless fish, and major parts of our genomes look and function like those of worms and bacteria. Your Inner Fish makes us look at ourselves and our world in an illuminating new light. This is science writing at its finest—enlightening, accessible and told with irresistible enthusiasm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most prominent naturalist in Britain before Charles Darwin, Richard Owen made empirical discoveries and offered theoretical innovations that were crucial to the proof of evolution. Among his many lasting contributions to science was the first clear definition of the term homology—“the same organ in different animals under every variety of form and function.” He also graphically demonstrated that all vertebrate species were built on the same skeletal plan and devised the vertebrate archetype as a representation of the simplest common form of all vertebrates. Just as Darwin’s ideas continue to propel the modern study of adaptation, so too will Owen’s contributions fuel the new interest in homology, organic form, and evolutionary developmental biology. His theory of the archetype and his views on species origins were first offered to the general public in On the Nature of Limbs, published in 1849. It reemerges here in a facsimile edition with introductory essays by prominent historians, philosophers, and practitioners from the modern evo-devo community.
