Book excerpt: "The abyssal plain. If you could walk directly into the sea, through the surf and away from the land, you would be likely to descend a gentle slope for two or three days. The water over your head would gradually become deeper, until the surface was about 200m above, say two average city blocks away. About this time the gradient would begin to increase, and soon you are walking quite steeply downhill, with the surface rapidly receding. The sediment beneath your feet will thicken as you approach the edge of the continent, where the soil and debris washed from the land eventually accumulates. At the end of a long day's walk the gradient eases and you stride out onto a prairie that stretches away into the far distance, flat and featureless, or sometimes with rolling hills or even studded with sudden abrupt mountains. The surface is now quite far away, not mere city blocks but the whole downtown core of a large city distant from where you stand. You have arrived at the edge of the abyssal plain. The details of your walk will vary according to where you start out, and might be quite different if you begin in eastern Canada and walk into the Atlantic, say, or in western Canada and walk into the North Pacific. In either case, though, you will eventually reach the abyssal plain, where the last of the land has been left behind and nothing is familiar"--

Download or read book Time Bandit written by Andy Hillstrand and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-03-31 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Alaskan king crab season, brothers Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand risk their lives and seek their fortunes upon the treacherous waters of the Bering Sea. Sons of a hard-bitten, highly successful fisherman, and born with brine in their blood, the Hillstrand boys couldn’t imagine a life without a swaying deck underfoot and a harvest of mighty king crabs waiting to be pulled from the ocean floor. In pursuit of their daily catch, the brothers brave ice floes and heaving waves sixty feet high, the perils of thousand-pound steel traps thrown about by the punishing wind, and the constant menace of the open, hungry water—epitomized in the chorus of a haunting sailors’ sing-along: “Many brave hearts are asleep in the deep, so beware, beware.” By turns raucous and reflective, exhilarating and anguished, enthralling, suspenseful, and wise, Time Bandit chronicles a larger-than-life love affair as old as civilization itself—a love affair between striving, willful man and inscrutable, enduring nature.
Download or read book Homeless in America written by Carol L. M. Caton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1990-02-22 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1980s have witnessed a dramatic increase in homelessness among impoverished and dependent persons, particularly in major metropolitan areas. In this in-depth study, Carol, L.M. Caton and her colleagues synthesize the available information on this alarming trend, providing a comprehensive discussion of the causes and historical antecedents of homelessness and answering such questions as: Who are the homeless and what are their day-to-day lives like? What can be done to help the homeless and ensure that society meets its responsibility to them? How many homeless are there and why are their numbers increasing? In addressing these questions Homeless in America describes various public and private shelter programs and, utilizing a unique scientific approach, discusses social and economic policy innovations aimed at independent living. The result is an invaluable resource for students in the social sciences, medicine, law, public policy, and social work, as well as for mental health professionals.

Snow and Anderson reveal who the homeless are, how they live, and why they have ended up on the streets. Debunking current stereotypes of the homeless. Down on Their Luck sketches a portrait of men and women who are highly adaptive, resourceful, and pragmatic. Their survival is a tale of human resilience and determination, not one of frailty and disability.
