Book Eliza Orme s Ambitions

Download or read book Eliza Orme s Ambitions written by Leslie Howsam and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2024-03-08 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are some figures hidden from history? Eliza Orme, despite becoming the first woman in Britain to earn a university degree in Law in 1888, leading both a political organization and a labour investigation in 1892, and participating actively in the women’s suffrage movement into the early twentieth century, is one such figure. Framed as a ‘research memoir’, Eliza Orme’s Ambitions fills out earlier scant accounts of this intriguing life, while speculating about why it has been overlooked. Established historian Leslie Howsam shapes the story around her own persistent curiosity in the context of a transformed research landscape, where important letters and explosive newspaper accounts have only recently come to light. These materials show how Orme’s career ambitions brought her into conflict with the male-dominated legal community of her time, while her political ambitions were cut short by disputes with other women activists whose notions of political strategy she repudiated. In public, Orme was a formidable debater for the causes she supported and against opponents whose strategies—even for women’s suffrage—she repudiated. In private, she was generous, warm, and witty, close to friends, family, and her female partner. Howsam’s account of uncovering Orme’s professional and personal trajectory will appeal to academic and non-academic readers interested in the progress and setbacks women experienced in the late-Victorian and Edwardian decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two girls use forbidden magic to fly and fight--for their country and for themselves--in this riveting debut that's part Shadow and Bone, part Code Name Verity. Seventeen-year-old Revna is a factory worker, manufacturing war machines for the Union of the North. When she's caught using illegal magic, she fears being branded a traitor and imprisoned. Meanwhile, on the front lines, Linné defied her father, a Union general, and disguised herself as a boy to join the army. They're both offered a reprieve from punishment if they use their magic in a special women's military flight unit and undertake terrifying, deadly missions under cover of darkness. Revna and Linné can hardly stand to be in the same cockpit, but if they can't fly together, and if they can't find a way to fly well, the enemy's superior firepower will destroy them--if they don't destroy each other first. We Rule the Night is a fiercely compelling story about sacrifice, complicated friendships, and survival against impossible odds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we balance our belief in human freedom with the need to defend ourselves against those who believe the use of terror can be justified? Can our handling of security risk and the laws we pass to deal with them distort our response to the threat of terrorism? In this sobering and remarkably frank analysis based on her 2011 Reith Lectures, Eliza Manningham-Buller, ex-Director General of MI5, the British Security Service, talks about key events during her tenure - from the threat of the IRA to al-Qaeda. She states that torture works but must never be used, how intelligence is gathered and why surveillance is necessary to protect democracy, the importance of the rule of law and why without security there can be no liberty.

  • Author : Zan Cammack

Download or read book Ireland s Gramophones written by Zan Cammack and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because gramophonic technology grew up alongside Ireland’s progressively more outspoken and violent struggles for political autonomy and national stability, Irish Modernism inherently links the gramophone to representations of these dramatic cultural upheavals. Many key works of Irish literary modernism—like those by James Joyce, Elizabeth Bowen, and Sean O’Casey—depend upon the gramophone for their ability to record Irish cultural traumas both symbolically and literally during one of the country’s most fraught developmental eras. In each work the gramophone testifies of its own complexity as a physical object and its multiform value in the artistic development of textual material. In each work, too, the object seems virtually self-placed—less an aesthetic device than a “thing” belonging primordially to the text. The machine is also often an agent and counterpart to literary characters. Thus, the gramophone points to a deeper connection between object and culture than we perceive if we consider it as only an image, enhancement, or instrument. This book examines the gramophone as an object that refuses to remain in the background of scenes in which it appears, forcing us to confront its mnemonic heritage during a period of Irish history burdened with political and cultural turbulence.
