Book excerpt: Peking ceded Formosa to Japan in 1895, whereupon Japan became the first Asian power in modern times to possess a colony, and the island became a testing ground for imperial policies. For two centuries the Formosan Chinese had resisted authority imposed upon them by inefficient continental Chinese. Now, Tokyo extended to insular Formosa many organizing, modernizing measures characterizing Japan's own vigorous Meiji Revolution. During the next fifty years, as living standards rose to approach those of Japan proper, early leaderless Formosan resistance to alien rule developed into organized appeals for effective representation in local government and at Tokyo. With reversion to continental Chinese control at the end of World War II, Formosans expected to conserve and enhance gains made during the Japanese era. Bitter disappointment promptly led again to rebellious relations with the continent. The author, long resident in Formosa and exclusively concerned with Formosan affairs while in government service during and after World War II, is well qualified to comment upon Formosa's history and prospects. He concludes that the Japanese era left an ineradicable mark upon the island people, an understanding of which will illuminate developments when Peking later undertakes the formidable task of converting Formosa into a fully disciplined and integrated province of the People's Republic of China.

It traces some of the main themes in Irish peace-making from their late Victorian roots to the beginning of the millennium: it explores the origins of the Good Friday Agreement, and many of the interconnections between Irish political history and contemporary affairs. The work offers an incisive reappraisal of different political leaders through the period. Drawing on new archival evidence, Home Rule illuminates a crucial aspect of British and Irish history over a two-hundred-year span."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Home Rule

  • Author : Nandita Sharma
  • Publisher : Duke University Press

  • Pages : 189 pages

Download or read book Home Rule written by Nandita Sharma and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-14 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Home Rule Nandita Sharma traces the historical formation and political separation of Natives and Migrants from the nineteenth century to the present to theorize the portrayal of Migrants as “colonial invaders.” The imperial-state category of Native, initially a mark of colonized status, has been revitalized in what Sharma terms the Postcolonial New World Order of nation-states. Under postcolonial rule, claims to autochthony—being the Native “people of a place”—are mobilized to define true national belonging. Consequently, Migrants—the quintessential “people out of place”—increasingly face exclusion, expulsion, or even extermination. This turn to autochthony has led to a hardening of nationalism(s). Criteria for political membership have shrunk, immigration controls have intensified, all while practices of expropriation and exploitation have expanded. Such politics exemplify the postcolonial politics of national sovereignty, a politics that Sharma sees as containing our dreams of decolonization. Home Rule rejects nationalisms and calls for the dissolution of the ruling categories of Native and Migrant so we can build a common, worldly place where our fundamental liberty to stay and move is realized.

Book The Home Rule Movement Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Home Rule Movement Classic Reprint written by Michael MacDonagh and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Rule Movement My friend, John O'Connor Power, once famous as "the Member for Mayo," gave me, shortly before his death in February, 1919, the papers he had collected in the course of his unique political career - commencing as an Irish Fenian and ending as a British Liberal. "Make what use you like of them," he says in his letter to me, "subject to one condition - they must not be made the basis of an attack upon any Irishman." It was easy for me to set O'Connor Powers mind at rest on that point. I am a historical writer, - of a sort, perhaps; but, most certainly, not a political pamphleteer. As such, I have no antipathies or prejudices. As such, I do not feel myself called upon to defend and justify, any more than I do to: . condemn and assail. What I like to think I have is sympathy with the aspirations of human nature, and pity for its struggles in the coil of adverse Fate. My sole object is simply to try to describe, to explain, to interpret, the principles and personalities of the Home Rule Movement from its rise under Isaac Butt in 1870 to its fall under John Dillon in 1918, as just one act in the extraordinary political and social drama of Ireland.
