Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Life of Jesus of Nazareth &C Many thoughts arise on the mention of Nazareth, of Nazareth where Jesus was "brought up." Yet how little do we know concerning the wonderful events transacted there, we who would gladly know so much. How shall Christians penetrate the mysteries of Nazareth, - that village or mountain-town, and yet city in Scripture phraseology, - difficult of access in all senses, the place itself remote, set in a hollow on a mountain side? We may indeed visit the modern town of Nazareth at this present time, and happy are they who can do so. Men can even drink at will from the very fountain, it may be, at which Mary filled her pitcher. But how conjure Nazareth back to the eye of faith as it appeared when inhabited by the saviour of the world? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus of Nazareth: A Study The aim Of this book is to help thoughtful readers of the gospels to discern more clearly the features of him whom those writings inimitably portray. It is avowedly a study rather than a story, and as a companion to the reading of the gospels it seeks to answer some of the questions which are raised by a sympathetic considera tion Of those narratives. These answers are Offered in an unargumentative way, even where the questions are still in debate among scholars. This method has been adopted because technical discussion would be of inter est to but few of those whom the book hopes to serve. On some Of the questions a non - committal attitude is taken in the belief that for the understanding of the life of Jesus it is of little importance which way the decision finally goes. Less attention has been given to questions Of geography and archaeology than to those which have a more vital biographical significance. A word concerning the point of view adopted. The church has inherited a rich treasure Of doctrine concern ing its Lord, the result of patient study and, frequently, of heated controversy. It is customary to approach the gospels with this interpretation of Christ as a premise, and such a study has some unquestionable advantages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus of Nazareth: His Life for the Young Now, I am far from pretending, that in the United States, or in England, youth of twelve or fifteen are more advanced in general knowledge than their fellows in Germany. In some things, commonly, they do not know as much. But I believe that the training in the Bible which children receive in good families in England, Scotland, and the United States, and in the Sunday school as conducted in these countries, puts them far in advance of French and German children in knowledge of the Scriptures, and in ability to understand and to dis cuss subjects that grow out of the stories and the doctrines of the Bible. And, besides this, they come earlier to the habit of thinking, talking, and judging of such subjects for themselves. Book The Extra Canonical Life of Christ

Download or read book The Extra Canonical Life of Christ written by Bernhard Pick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Extra-Canonical Life of Christ: Being a Record of the Acts and Sayings of Jesus of Nazareth Drawn From Uninspired Sources I make no apology for bringing a work of this kind before the public, because it fills a gap in Jesus-Literature. The number of the lives of Jesus is legion, and each has its own peculiarity. One is written from a positive, another from a negative standpoint; one is constructive, another destructive; one is popular, another scientific. There are those who find the evangelical history in Buddhistic sources like R. Seydel (das Evangelium von Jesu in seinem Verhalinis zur Buddha-Sage und Lehre, Leipzig, 1882; die Buddha-Legende und das Leben Jesu, 1884; 2d ed. 1897), and N. Notowitsch (die Lucke im Leben Jesu, Stuttgart, 1894), and those who have treated the life of Jesus for socialistic-atheistic propaganda like D. Nieuwenhuis, G. Lommel. E. Wurm, F. Engels, et. al. (on which compare H. Kohler, Sozialistische Irrlehren ucer die Entstehung des Christentums, Leipzig, 1889). Book Jesus Christ the Divine Man His Life and Times Classic Reprint

Download or read book Jesus Christ the Divine Man His Life and Times Classic Reprint written by J. F. Vallings and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ the Divine Man, His Life and Times If any apology be needed for adding another to the various lives of Christ already before the public, it may be well to state how far this little book occupies any independent ground of its own. The object of the writer has been to make some small contribution to the moral and spiritual history of the Life of lives, and this in some especial relation to missionary work and the contact of Christianity with non-Christian religions. "The ethical," as Prof Kuenen well says, "is the universal human." Ethical and spiritual sequences of cause and effect have been especially before the writers mind. The Gospel history is "a history, which in every part of it," as Weiss says, "must be considered in the light of Him who transcends all history." The superhistorical relations of the historical life have been touched upon in some of their bearings upon the past, present, and future of Christianity. Even Keim, from whose point of view the present writer wholly differs, while gladly acknowledging his great ability and learning, and not infrequent reverence of tone and enthusiasm of humanity, affirms of Christ's life that it is "bounded at its circumference by the human limitations of His age, in its centre exalted above all." Such language may imply nothing but hero worship, but it is at all events a recognition of the incomparable grandeur of Christ's life and character. While the moral and spiritual aspects of the Life have been placed in the foreground, every effort has been made to present the physical and social environment briefly, yet accurately, in the light of modern research. In this connection the archaeological and geographical labours of the Palestine Exploration Society have been largely drawn upon, and the most recent records of travel, especially those of Captain Conder, Mr. Lawrence Oliphant, and Dr. Selah Merrill. Upon the whole, the greatest obligations are due to Dr. Edersheim His wealth of Rabbinical lore, his great theological erudition, his deep sympathy with Israel, springing from the strongest of all sources, the fountain of blood relationship, and his true spirituality of touch, place his work, in the writers estimate, at the head of all the contemporary literature of the subject.
