Book excerpt: In offering this study to a public accustomed only to the unquestioning acceptance of the home as something perfect, holy, quite above discussion, a word of explanation is needed.First, let it be clearly and definitely stated, the purpose of this book is to maintain and improve the home. Criticism there is, deep and thorough; but not with the intention of robbing us of one essential element of home life--rather of saving us from conditions not only unessential, but gravely detrimental to home life. Every human being should have a home; the single person his or her home; and the family their home. The home should offer to the individual rest, peace, quiet, comfort, health, and that degree of personal expression requisite; and these conditions should be maintained by the best methods of the time. The home should be to the child a place of happiness and true development; to the adult a place of happiness and that beautiful reinforcement of the spirit needed by the world's workers. We are here to perform our best service to society, and to find our best individual growth and expression; a right home is essential to both these uses.

Book excerpt: The Home, Its Work and Influence By Charlotte Perkins Gilman A Critically Acclaimed Book In 1903 Charlotte wrote one of her most critically acclaimed books, The Home: Its Work and Influence, which expanded upon Women and Economics, proposing that women are oppressed in their home and that the environment in which they live needs to be modified in order to be healthy for their mental states. In between traveling and writing, her career as a literary figure was secured. From 1909 to 1916 Gilman single-handedly wrote and edited her own magazine, The Forerunner, in which much of her fiction appeared. By presenting material in her magazine that would "stimulate thought," "arouse hope, courage and impatience," and "express ideas which need a special medium," she aimed to go against the mainstream media which was overly sensational. Over seven years and two months the magazine produced eighty-six issues, each twenty eight pages long. The magazine had nearly 1,500 subscribers and featured such serialized works as What Diantha Did (1910), The Crux (1911), Moving the Mountain (1911), and Herland. The Forerunner has been cited as being "perhaps the greatest literary accomplishment of her long career." 30] After its seven years, she wrote hundreds of articles which were submitted to the Louisville Herald, The Baltimore Sun, and the Buffalo Evening News. Her autobiography, The Living of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, which she began to write in 1925, appeared posthumously in 1935.

Book excerpt: First published in 1903, this book by best-selling author Charlotte Perkins Gilman considers the domestic situation of most women to be the single worst thing to have happened to human society since Cain and Abel. Women's skills - child care and to a lesser extent, food preparation - are not exposed to the same developmental process as other industries, where specialization and competition lead to progress. Therefore the average woman performs them poorly. Women who are not challenged to grow and expand their skills are a drag on society. The stereotype of women changing their mind comes from their daily exposure to multitasking...

Book excerpt: Often referred to as a ‘sociological study’, ́The Home: Its Work and Influence ́ – written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and published in 1903 – is an examination of the traditional household structure and the repression of women within a domestic role. Ahead of her time on feminist issues and women’s suffrage, the author criticises the assumed domesticity of women in the early part of the 20th century. Gilman argues that liberating women (and men, for that matter) and enabling them to gain economic independence is an essential ingredient for improving a marriage, family, and their role as a parent – improving not only classic domestic setups but racial inequality too. In ́The Home ́, Gilman focuses on key topics such as cooking, domestic ethics, and children, in an effort to show how every household could benefit the entire family unit as well as society at large. This book is perfect for those interested in gaining insight into women's place in society in the early 20th century. Charlotte Perkins Gilman, also known as Charlotte Perkins Stetson, was born on 3rd July 1860 in Connecticut, USA. Her early family life was troubled, with her father abandoning his wife and family; a move which strongly influenced her feminist political leanings and advocator of women’s rights. After working as a tutor and painter, Perkins – a self-declared humanist and tomboy – began to work as a writer of short stories, novels, non-fiction pieces, and poetry. Her best-known work is her semi-autobiographical short story, inspired by her post-natal depression, entitled ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’, which was published in 1892 and made into a film in 2011. Gilman was a member of the American National Women's Hall of Fame and a strong believer that "the domestic environment oppressed women through the patriarchal beliefs upheld by society". A believer in euthanasia, she was diagnosed with incurable breast cancer in January 1932 and subsequently took her own life in August 1935, writing in her suicide note that she "chose chloroform over cancer".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a very significant look on how women were treated in the late 19th century. The first chapters of the book deal with irony the wonderful attributes that a woman had to offer within a home. The book is written by a woman on women in the home; and therefore their influence on the house as a whole. With chapter titles like 'The House as a workshop: 1. The housewife', 'Home-Cooking', 'Art Home', 'Domestic Ethics', and 'The Lady of the House', the reader is led to believe that the theme of the book is the positive influence that a woman has at home. In fact, the book was written to confuse. The notion of 'wonderful' influence of the woman disappears in the final chapters of the book, before the critical force of the author. After reading the book to the end, one feels as if Gilman saw the women of his time as weak and protected; and men as strong and above; and, after work, women were no longer family center.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Home: Its Work and Influence (1903) is a sociological study by American author and feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Inspired by her work as a social reformer and advocate for women's suffrage, Gilman sought to write a work of nonfiction that explained the role of the home as a human institution, as well as to address the problems and inequities of home life--especially for women. In the beginning, Gilman argues that "[e]very human being should have a home." The role of the home in human society, she claims, is not only to provide safety and comfort, but to facilitate the productivity, creativity, and individuality of every person. Despite this, the home has evolved far slower than all other human institutions, ensuring that the life of humanity has failed to progress as far as its ideals would suggest. Having identified this problem--as well as shown that women bear responsibility for maintaining households while men control the home as a system of power--Gilman moves through such topics as domesticity, cooking, entertainment, and children in order to properly identify the highly gendered roles of each member of the home. Ultimately, Gilman argues that a progressive home will benefit not only each individual within the family unit, but the whole of society at large. The Home: Its Work and Influence is a powerful work of sociological thought by a leading reformer and feminist of her day. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Home: Its Work and Influence is a classic of American literature and nonfiction reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: Charlotte Perkins Gilman's 'The home: its work and influence' is a poignant and insightful analysis of the role of women in the domestic sphere during the late 19th century. Through a blend of personal anecdotes, sociological observations, and forward-thinking ideals, Gilman challenges traditional notions of a woman's place in the home and society. Her writing style is clear, concise, and persuasive, making a compelling case for the need to redefine the perceived limitations of women's domestic work. Set against the backdrop of the women's rights movement and the turn of the century, Gilman's book remains a landmark text in feminist literature. Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a leading feminist and social reformer of her time, drew inspiration from her own experiences of postpartum depression and struggles within a traditional marriage to write 'The home: its work and influence.' Her unique perspective as a woman in a male-dominated society fueled her passion for advocating for women's autonomy and equality. Gilman's progressive views continue to influence feminist discourse today. I highly recommend 'The home: its work and influence' to readers interested in feminist literature, social history, and gender studies. Gilman's groundbreaking work sheds light on the complexities of gender roles and the importance of redefining domestic labor, making it a must-read for those seeking a deeper understanding of women's struggles for societal recognition and empowerment.
