  • ISBN : 9780521559577
  • Pages : 270 pages

Book excerpt: The ageing of the population is a demographic phenomenon, a social problem and a policy issue. The increase in the numbers of aged and in the costs of supporting and caring for them have also brought increases in family care, in deinstitutionalisation of aged care services and in issues of quality and outcomes of care and consumer rights. The growing recognition of the feminisation of ageing also has significant social and policy consequences. In this 1998 book, Diane Gibson synthesises a wide range of material to provide an overview of these issues and policy responses worldwide. The book then looks in-depth at Australia, a country typical in the problems it faces, and a world leader in many of its solutions. Gibson also offers a more conceptual examination of theoretical implications and practical consequences. She elucidates debates in ways which will set new standards for aged care policy and practice worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. These themes of change in employment are covered in depth in the UK with dedicated chapters exploring, workforce patterns and skill needs, HR policies and practices, recruitment and selection, graduate recruitment, unionization, pay and conditions and psychological contracts in organizations. The book also contains a significant international comparative dimension with individual chapter analysis of employment issues in Australia, Canada and the United States, as well as an Anglo-German comparison.

Book Handbook of Asian Aging

Download or read book Handbook of Asian Aging written by Hyunsook Yoon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In western countries, the rising tide of population aging took 100 years to alter the face of societies, but Asia is experiencing comparable changes in not much more than a quarter of a century. Contributors to "The Handbook of Aging" describe the magnitude of these changes and their effects on the aged and on societies attempting to adapt to the dramatic improvements in life expectancy brought on by rapid economic and social transformations. Asia encompasses a vast reach from Pakistan and India to Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia, and in this book including Australia. "The Handbook of Aging" provides a framework for making sense of the meeting between reverential views of the elderly and contemporary priorities as Asia arrives at the crossroads. The need for innovative approaches to social policy and personal practices is nowhere more evident than in Asian countries, where modern marketing economies have forced hard political choices. The economic tigers of the Asian-Pacific region experienced the aging of their populations ahead of other Asian countries, but solutions reached during times of financial boom are being re-examined as economies come back to earth, with soft or hard landings. "The Handbook of Asian Aging" provides an atlas of the far-reaching changes that are afoot and that will become even more pronounced in the near future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains selected peer-reviewed chapters that cover novel information on cognitive disorders and updated information on dementias written by international researchers. In this project, we discuss the effect of metabolic disorders on the development of cognitive disorders in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. In another chapter, the authors highlight the usability of an assistive software application developed for patients with dementia. On the other hand, an extensive review of novel information on different types of dementia is made. This chapter covers the novel aspect of dementia without ignoring its foundation. Therefore, apart from classic issues that cannot be missed in any textbook about cognitive disorders, we introduce updated information on the commonest dementias. The current situation of the prisoner population with dementia in a correctional setting is analyzed in another chapter, and specific recommendations to improve the health outcomes for prisoners are delivered. In more than one chapter, our authors wrote about a copious microtubule-associated protein (tau) as a biological fluid biomarker and tauopathies leading to cognitive disorder and cancer. Finally, the role of the hypothalamus in Alzheimer's disease is discussed. We look forward with confidence and pride to the remarkable role that this book will play for a new vision and mission.
