Book The Holy Spirit Medieval Roman Catholic and Reformation Traditions

Download or read book The Holy Spirit Medieval Roman Catholic and Reformation Traditions written by Stanley M. Burgess and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 1994-05-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Spirit: Medieval Roman Catholic and Reformation Traditions (Sixth-Sixteenth Centuries) is the third in a series of three volumes devoted to the history of Christian pneumatology. In the first volume, The Holy Spirit: Ancient Christian Traditions (formerly titled The Spirit and the Church: Antiquity), Stanley M. Burgess detailed Christian efforts from the end of the first century to the end of the fifth century A.D. to understand the divine Third Person. Volume 1 explored the tensions between the developing institutional order and various prophetic elements in the Church. The second volume, The Holy Spirit: Eastern Christian Traditions, brought together a wealth of material on the Spirit from Eastern Christian traditions, a rich heritage often overlooked in Western Christianity. By exploring the various ways in which Eastern theologians understood the Third Person of the Trinity, volume 2 showed how modern Christians can gain a wider vision and fuller understanding of the workings of the Holy Spirit in history and in our own generation. This concluding volume examines medieval Roman Catholic and Reformation attitudes toward the Holy Spirit beginning with the writings of medieval Catholic theologians from Gregory the Great and Bede to Aquinas and Bonaventure. Subsequent sections describe the contributions of influential women such Hildegard of Bingen, Birgitta of Sweden, and Catherine of Siena; "fringe" figures such as Joachim of Fiore and the Cathars; the magisterial reformers Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin; leading Catholic reformers such as Ignatius of Loyola; and the "radical reformers" Thomas Muntzer and Menno Simons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Spirit in the Mediaeval Church: A Study of Christian Teaching Concerning the Holy Spirit and His Place in the Trinity From the Post-Patristic Age to the Counter-Reformation This book is the result of a request made to me in 1911 by the late Professor Swete to continue his work on the development of the Doctrine of the Holy Spirit which, as he remarked at the time and implied later in his preface to The Holy Spirit in the Ancient Church, he felt he would not live to undertake beyond the Age of the Fathers. Being engaged then in reading round the subject in the mediaeval period, I consented to this request, little thinking that, owing to the comparative newness of the ground, it would involve a task covering the space of eleven years. Even so, this book makes no pretensions to being exhaustive, but simply seeks, by surveying the thousand years which separate the Ancient Church from the Modem, to show in as true a light as may be possible what is the foundation of modem thought concerning the Person and work of the Holy Spirit and His place in the Triune Life of God. Since this is a continuation of Professor Swete's work it naturally follows his method, which, with certain variations, is probably the best for an historical study of mediaeval doctrine as for one of patristic. I am myself responsible for the translations, and have given full references throughout to assist any who may desire to consult the originals for themselves. References are given in each case to modem authorities, of which three have been especially valuable - Erdmann's History of Philosophy, Fisher's History of Christian Doctrine, and Herzog's Religious Encyclopaedia. My sincere thanks are due to the President of the Wesleyan Methodist Conference (the Rev. J. Alfred Sharp) and the officers of the Epworth Press for their kindness and interest; to the Rev. Dr. H. Maldwyn Hughes, Principal of Wesley House, Cambridge, for reading most of the MS. and making several suggestions; and to the Rev. R. Newton Flew, M.A., for compiling the Index of Subjects. Book Holy Power Holy Presence

Download or read book Holy Power Holy Presence written by Elizabeth Dreyer and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western theology is frequently criticized for not having a fully developed pneumatology. According to these critics, preoccupation with Christology and an excessive focus on the nature and unity of God have come at the expense of a full theology of the three persons. While admitting that there is some truth to these criticisms, Elizabeth Dreyer maintains that those who level them base their conclusions on a narrow range of texts and thus fail to establish a true neglect of the Holy Spirit. Medieval authors offer a wealth of creative language and insight that speaks to the role of the Holy Spirit in contemporary spirituality and contributes to a renewed pneumatology for the twenty-first century. Not only were those years filled with dynamic Catholic leaders and thinkers, but they flourished in times very like our own: an increasingly secular culture hostile to Christianity, threats to religious liberty, scandal in the Church, cultural degradation and more. In Positively Medieval you’ll encounter some of the leading figures of the time, men and women who not only passed on the torch of Christian faith, but also rebuilt society in the wake of the barbarian invasions. Their energetic response to very dark times will inspire you to meet today’s challenges with the same smart, creative, clear-eyed confidence.

Book The Holy Spirit In Biblical Teaching Through the Centuries and Today

Download or read book The Holy Spirit In Biblical Teaching Through the Centuries and Today written by Anthony C. Thiselton and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is divided into three parts. Part One provides a thematic analysis and exegetical commentary on all the relevant biblical and cognate literature, including Josephus, Philo and the Mishnah. Part Two investigates the thinking of key Christian theologians on the Holy Spirit, from the Apostolic Fathers to eighteenth century authors such as John Wesley and Jonathan Edwards. Part Three examines more recent writings on the Spirit, from the nineteenth century onwards, including major systematic theologians such as Schleiermacher, Barth and Moltmann, as well as biblical scholars such as James D G Dunn, Gordon Fee and Gerd Theissen. Thiselton concludes the entire study by identifying seven fundamental themes, and calling for greater dialogue between mainstream scholarship and contemporary leaders of the Pentecostal and Renewal movements.
