Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of how the Arabic Qur'an became the English Koran For millions of Muslims, the Qur'an is sacred only in Arabic, the original Arabic in which it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century. To many Arab and non-Arab believers alike, the book literally defies translation, yet English translations are growing in both number and importance. Bruce Lawrence tells the remarkable story of the centuries-long quest to translate the Qur'an's lyrical verses—and to make English itself an Islamic language. A translation saga like no other, this panoramic book looks at cyber Korans, versions by feminist translators, and even a graphic Qur'an by the acclaimed visual artist Sandow Birk.

Book The Meaning of the Glorious Koran

Download or read book The Meaning of the Glorious Koran written by Marmaduke William Pickthall and published by New York : New American Library. This book was released on 1953 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A translation of the Koran into English by a native English speaker. Pickthall meant the work to convey the meaning of the Koran rather than to serve as a replacement for reading it in Arabic. He believed that "the Koran cannot be translated". The structure includes a short introduction summarizing the life of Mohammed and explaining the organization of the surahs (in the order that Mohammed preferred them rather than by chronological revelation or by consistent theme). The copy of the Koran that Pickthall used was written in 1246 C.E. by Al-Hajj Muhammad Shakarzâdeh from Turkey.

Book New Theory of the Holy Qur an Translation A Textbook for Advanced University Students of Linguistics and Translation

Download or read book New Theory of the Holy Qur an Translation A Textbook for Advanced University Students of Linguistics and Translation written by Ali Alhaj and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2015-06 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translation strategies are the procedures employed by the translator to attempt a solution to the multifarious baffling problems with which translation is indubitably replete. Malone (1988, p.78) defines translation The steps, selected from a consciously known range of potential procedures, taken to solve a translation problem, which has been consciously detected and resulting in a consciously applied solution. While some strategies are helpful, others turn out to be of little avail. It follows, then, that the translator has to sort out the wheat from the chaff in pursuit of a good translation. Here, the translator may utilize particular strategies in accordance with the method anticipated in the course of translation, i.e. target- orientedness or source- orientedness., Faced with differences in the extralinguistic reality of the two cultures or ist lexical mapping, the translator tries to reconcile them by relying on the following procedures: borrowing, definition, literal translation, substitution, lexical creation, omission, and addition. Three comments that need to be made by the researcher in connection with this list: First, not all of the procedures achieve cultural transfer in the sense of filling the gap, but they all serve the purpose of achieving communicative equivalence in translation. For instance, substitution and omission certainly do not help to make members of the target culture aware of anything that their culture does not already possess, and lexical creation is no more enlightening than the use of the sources – language expression unless accompanied by some other procedure that will make the particular extra-linguistic feature part of their experiences. Second, combinations of procedures rather than single procedures are required for optimum transmission of cultural information (e.g., borrowing –and- definition, borrowing-and- substitution, lexical creation-and- definition,) Third, in planning his/her translation strategy, the translator does not make a one-time decision on how he/she will treat unmatched elements of culture; rather, even if the translator has established an overall order of preferences, he/she usually makes a new decision for each element and for ist each use in an act of communication, rather, even if he has established an overall order of preferences, he usually makes a new decision for each such element and for each use in an act of communication .(Cohen,1990,p.78)

Book Thomas Jefferson s Qur an

Download or read book Thomas Jefferson s Qur an written by Denise Spellberg and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original and illuminating book, Denise A. Spellberg reveals a little-known but crucial dimension of the story of American religious freedom—a drama in which Islam played a surprising role. In 1765, eleven years before composing the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson bought a Qur’an. This marked only the beginning of his lifelong interest in Islam, and he would go on to acquire numerous books on Middle Eastern languages, history, and travel, taking extensive notes on Islam as it relates to English common law. Jefferson sought to understand Islam notwithstanding his personal disdain for the faith, a sentiment prevalent among his Protestant contemporaries in England and America. But unlike most of them, by 1776 Jefferson could imagine Muslims as future citizens of his new country. Based on groundbreaking research, Spellberg compellingly recounts how a handful of the Founders, Jefferson foremost among them, drew upon Enlightenment ideas about the toleration of Muslims (then deemed the ultimate outsiders in Western society) to fashion out of what had been a purely speculative debate a practical foundation for governance in America. In this way, Muslims, who were not even known to exist in the colonies, became the imaginary outer limit for an unprecedented, uniquely American religious pluralism that would also encompass the actual despised minorities of Jews and Catholics. The rancorous public dispute concerning the inclusion of Muslims, for which principle Jefferson’s political foes would vilify him to the end of his life, thus became decisive in the Founders’ ultimate judgment not to establish a Protestant nation, as they might well have done. As popular suspicions about Islam persist and the numbers of American Muslim citizenry grow into the millions, Spellberg’s revelatory understanding of this radical notion of the Founders is more urgent than ever. Thomas Jefferson’s Qur’an is a timely look at the ideals that existed at our country’s creation, and their fundamental implications for our present and future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its relevance to the subsequent development of Western Islamic studies, the intellectual contribution of early modern Catholicism is still an under-researched area. The aim of this volume is to fill this gap, offering a series of essays dealing with the study of the Qur’an and Arabic language in early modern Catholic Europe. Focusing on the circulation of manuscripts, translations and printed books, the essays highlight how Catholic Orientalism contributed to the birth and spread of Western Islamic studies, although sometimes it was still directed towards religious polemics. Among the protagonists of this period of Islamic studies, the volume will focus on Catholic priests, missionaries, religious orders (Jesuits, Franciscans, Carmelites) Eastern Christians, converts, and other prominent figures in the Catholic culture of the time. Special attention will be given to the work of Ludovico Marracci, author of a fundamental edition of the Arabic text and Latin translation of the Qur’an with an introduction, notes, refutations and religious and linguistic insights. The volume is of interest to an audience of specialists and non-specialists interested both in Islamic and Qur'anic studies and in the history of modern Catholicism, missions, and Orientalism

Book The Qur an and Its Message Versus the Three Major Monotheistic Religions

Download or read book The Qur an and Its Message Versus the Three Major Monotheistic Religions written by Joseph The Monotheist and published by Joseph The Monotheist. This book was released on 2024-09-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both the curious and the believer alike find themselves pondering the same question: What is the Qur’an, and what is so special about the Qur’an that drives almost one-quarter of the world’s population to believe in it? The Qur’an is not what one would consider an easy read, whether talking about Arabic speaking peoples reading the Arabic Qur’an or non-Arabic speaking peoples reading translations of the text in other languages. Most people think that reading the Qur’an once or even several times readily enables them to understand what the Qur’an is saying. That surely would be true if one were a native Arabic speaker living in the space-time of the revelation fourteen hundred years ago. However, for us living in other space-time, the present author assures the reader that that is not the case. This book is part of a series. It is the first volume of “The Qur’anic Revelation: A Reformed Understanding”—published concurrently with the second and third volumes. In this book the author argues that the religion of Islam is an unacceptable representation of the Qur’anic revelation. Furthermore, that the religions based on God’s revealed scriptures, as we know them today, including but not limited to the religion of Islam, deviate from the essence of God’s revelations—mainly bringing Judaism and Christianity into the discussion. The author puts forward his own interpretation of the Qur’anic revelation and, in this volume, primarily addresses its inclusiveness aspect by exploring how the Qur’an understands both inclusiveness and religion. What Islam is the book talking about? Is it one Islam that around one-fourth of the world’s population follows? Are all of the commands in the Qur’an of eternal applicability? Did the Qur’an come with a new religion and how did the Qur’an define membership in the religion? What impact did the Qur’an have on the beliefs and practices of those who accepted the revelation from the peoples of previous scriptures in the space-time of the Prophet, yet as argued, who at the same time maintained their religious identities? This volume addresses these questions and a multitude of others. This book is self-contained. It does not require the reader to have previous knowledge in any of the topics discussed. The book discusses topics you do not find in your typical book about the Qur’an or Islam. It would interest those who want to learn about the Qur’an and its message. Among this group would be those searching for a reformed understanding of the Qur’an and how it applies today; those curious to learn how the Qur’anic message affects followers of the previous revealed scriptures; and those interested in monotheistic religions in general.
