Book excerpt: Andrew Morton uncovers the true story of the biggest celebrity of our age. Everyone knows Tom Cruise—or at least what he wants us to know. We know that the man behind the smile overcame a tough childhood to star in astonishing array of blockbusters: Top Gun, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, several Mission: Impossible movies, and more. We know he has taken artistic chances, too, earning him three Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. But beyond that, the picture becomes a bit less clear... We know that Tom is a devoted follower of the Church of Scientology. We know that, despite persistent rumors about his sexuality, he has been married to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes. But it was not until he jumped on Oprah's couch to proclaim his love for Katie and denounced Brooke Shields for turning to the "Nazi science" of psychiatry that we began to realize how much we did not know about the charming, hardworking star. For all the headlines and the rumors, the real Tom Cruise has remained surprisingly hidden—until now.

Book Tom Cruise

Download or read book Tom Cruise written by Ruth O'Donnell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Cruise is a Hollywood superstar like no other. World famous since his debut in the 1980s, he remains among the highest paid actors. Why has his persona resonated so powerfully with millions of viewers? Using psychoanalytic theory, "Tom Cruise: Performing Masculinity in Post Vietnam Hollywood" demonstrates how his star persona sublimates anxieties about masculinity. Amid Reagan-era military jingoism and concern over declining industrial labour, he represented a new model of American masculinity based on white-collar upward mobility. Spanning blockbuster films such as Risky Business (1983), Jerry Maguire (1996) and the Mission: Impossible series (1996 - 2011), this book illustrates how his characters exemplify entrepreneurialism, charisma, technological gadgetry and verbal acuity to redefine male success. His newly emotive type - 'help me help you' - also successfully overcomes interpersonal conflicts with patriarchal authority and senior women in the workplace, and navigates race relations. The first scholarly study of Tom Cruise's celebrity, this book surveys his entire career and builds on Richard Dyer's 'star theory.' It develops the core dynamic of his star persona, a mix of projected character traits and 'real life' trivia or gossip, and establishes that his box office success reflects his persona's ability to work through the psychodynamic preoccupations of his films. This exceptional appeal evolved, at times characterised by complicity with 1980s materialistic hedonism (Taps, 1981), male spectacle (Magnolia, 1999), or his use of martial technology (War of the Worlds, 2005), and their attendant psychic meanings. Recent shifts in American culture, however, in tandem with Tom Cruise's growing evangelism for the Church of Scientology, may be threatening his appeal. Ultimately, this book offers a picture of how stars reflect the values and crises of their societies, and fills a substantial gap in scholarship on celebrity studies, critical cultural analysis, masculinity studies, and film theory.

Book A True Hollywood Legend

Download or read book A True Hollywood Legend written by Les Grossman and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Les Grossman's Life History DescriptionMaster of all media long before Howard Stern, the real Les Grossman's life coincides with great events in U.S. history. As a high school kid, working part time in downtown Washington, he parked his car on the same cobblestoned alley that John Wilkes Booth parked his horse prior to doing his dastardly deed at Ford's Theater. LG sold marching shoes within one mile of MLK when he made the infamous “I Have a Dream” speech. Les witnessed integration of the Virginia school system literally one black student at a time. The decade after asking Jack Ford if his Dad was going to run for VP, he saw President Nixon pull up to the neighboring Ford home and quietly go in. While some of his concerts were staging grounds for civil disobedience, he still helped provide music for protests with his ground breaking country rock band Tractor who composed the soundtrack for David Lynch's pre Eraserhead movie Grandmother. Albeit, not a peacenik, Les Grossman was against sacrificing our troops as they heroically won every battle only for useless politicians to lose the war! That included massive Washington Monument demonstrations where Abby Hoffman and later stock broker Jerry Rubin welcomed everyone to the “World's greatest hard on!” LG even provided truckloads of food on a donation basis. Earlier, as a kindergarten student next door to the last working farm in Alexandria, VA, Les was right across the street from the newly transferred Episcopal High School junior, later to be war hero Senator John McCain. LG delivered newspapers with the huge Bay of Pigs headline. In eighth grade science class, he sat next to lifetime friend musician Ron Culbertson while they watched on TV our first American shot into Space and back. Then eight years later Les was backstage at the July 9, 1969 Blind Faith concert watching a small TV as Neil Armstrong took man's first steps on the moon while the lanky pale Ginger Baker simultaneously strolled in front of him to get to his drum set! As LG helped make the first smoothies on the planet, he opened GaZang Organic Groceries before anybody dreamed of Whole Foods! He produced an FM radio underground music show when FM radio effectively meant find me! Les discovered and lived in the World famous Negril, Jamaica resort Rick's Café when it was nothing more than a $100 a month over-run play boy pad! He observed Jimmy Page and Robert Plant being interviewed by Time Magazine back- stage at his onetime only in US concert history, Led Zeppelin/Who gig. The interview stopped as everyone wondered who the kid was leaning against the wall. They found out when Les Grossman told them he was the producer as in the guy paying them to perform and they could go on with their interview! Decades later, for whatever reason, Tom Cruise, Ben Stiller, and writer Justin Theroux did a Hollywood portrayal of the real Les Grossman in a Tropic Thunder cameo role. While Tom Cruise as LG not only reignited his then faltering career when LG stole the show, the character developed a life of his own with a huge global fan base. Sure enough, a couple years later Les Grossman was invited to produce the MTV awards with a killer Jennifer Lopez dance skit. Upon that performance taking Hollywood by storm plus of course going viral, Paramount Films “committed” $100,000,000 to make the Les Grossman movie. “Not so fast” says the real Les Grossman as he co-writes his own screenplay or he'll have to tell the powers to be to take a big step back and etc. etc. This is where we are now folks. So read on for details!TheRealLesGrossman.com
