Book excerpt: Ever since Beatrice’s grandmother, and sole guardian, became gravely ill, the ten-year-old has felt the sting of her own dark shadow, ever present, never fading, there even when not seen. Living in a little house on the edge of the woods, she is afraid of what will become of her if her guardian doesn’t recover, and Beatrice yearns to ask Elijah to spare her grandmother’s life. When Beatrice is lured into the woods by her dog, Barley, she discovers a different world, one where animals can speak, objects are not always what they seem, and time slows. Here, there is an urgent problem that the animals believe only Beatrice can resolve. Using her dark shadow, Beatrice must restore the Light to Mount Rundle before the destructive, violent shadows destroy Fenland. But when Barley and other creatures are snatched by the shadows, Beatrice knows she must first journey to the Netherworld to rescue them before she can recover the Light. As she journeys through Fenland, she meets a boy, Walley, and animals such as Oliver the river otter, George the ground squirrel, and Viola the vole. Together, Oliver, Walley and Beatrice search for the Old Hermit, who they believe can help recover the Light, travel to the Netherworld, and negotiate with Elijah. Along the way, they witness the shadows’ trail of destruction, the darkening landscape, and the displacement of animals in a changing climate. Will Beatrice be able to restore the Light to Mount Rundle before it’s too late? Will the Old Hermit help recover loved ones from the Netherworld? And most importantly, will she secure her chance to barter for her grandmother’s life? A hauntingly beautiful and tender book, The Struggle for Fenland: Quietly We Fall explores the universality of faith, grief, kindness, and compassion for young readers. It is Part One of Beatrice’s journey.

Book excerpt: In the era of the Internet and Oprah, in which formerly taboo information is readily available or freely confided, secrecy and privacy have in many ways given way to an onslaught of confession. Yet for those who are HIV positive, decisions about disclosure of their diagnosis force them to confront intimate, fundamental, and rarely discussed questions about truth, lies, sex, and trust. Drawing from interviews with over seventy gay men and women, intravenous drug users, sex workers, bisexual men, and heterosexual men and women, the authors provide a detailed portrait of moral, social, and psychological decision making. The interviews convey the complex emotions of love, lust, longing, hope, despair, and fear that shape individual dilemmas about whether to disclose to, deceive, or trust others concerning this disease. Some of those interviewed revealed their diagnosis widely; others told no one. Some struggled and ultimately told their partners; others spoke in codes or half-truths. One woman discovered her husband's diagnosis in a diary; when confronted, he denied it. Each year in the United States, 40,000 new cases of HIV arise, yet approximately one-third of the 900,000 Americans who are infected do not know it. As treatments have improved, unsafe sexual behavior has increased and efforts at prevention have stalled. Many of those infected continue to fear and experience rejection and discrimination. Addressing broad debates about the nature of secrecy, morality, and silence, this book explores public policy questions in the light of the nuanced, private decisions that are shaping the course of an epidemic and have broader indications for all.

Book excerpt: "Wonderful . . . J. V. Jones is a striking writer." So says Robert Jordan, the author of The Wheel of Time epic fantasy series. And Jones lives up to that praise in the highly charged epic adventure of Ash March and Raif Sevrance, two outcasts whose fate are entwined by ancient prophecies and need, in the cold, dark world that threatens to be torn asunder by a war to end all wars. Isolated by their birthrights, they are but two who fight the dreaded Endlords, and their strength and courage will be needed if the world is to be saved from darkness." Raif, wrongly accused and cut off from his clan by the treachery of their new headsman, has a talent for killing that is part of his curse and his burden. But he bears another burden of greater weight. Ash is a sacred warrior to the Sull, an ancient race whose numbers have declined. Raised as a foundling, never knowing her true history, she must learn to accept the terrible gifts of her heritage. But as Ash learns more of her greater fate, Raif's task looms dark and desperate, for he must journey through the nightmare realm of the Want, a place where even the Sull now fear to tread. For deep within the Want is the Fortress of Grey Ice, and there he must heal the breach in the Blindwall that already threatens the world. Should he fail, not even Ash's powers can save them. . . . Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hollow Needle (1910) is a novel by Maurice Leblanc. Originally serialized in in Je sais tout, a popular French magazine, The Hollow Needle is a crime and adventure novel featuring the legendary Arsène Lupin. Partly based on the life of French anarchist Marius Jacob, Lupin first appeared in print in 1905 as an answer to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Blending crime fiction, fantasy, and mystery, Leblanc crafts original and entertaining tales of adventure starring one of the greatest literary characters of all time—Arsène Lupin, gentleman thief. Arsène Lupin is the world’s greatest thief, an unmatched force for good whose exploits threaten the wealth and standing of France’s most wicked men. In this installment of Leblanc’s beloved series, Lupin uses his remarkable wit and chameleon-like ability to move undetected through aristocratic society in order to steal, trick, and cheat his way through life. Despite his criminal nature, he operates under a strict moral code, only taking from those who have taken from the poor all their lives. In this novel, Lupin discovers the secret of the Kings of France, leading him to a hidden hoard of jewels passed down since the days of the Roman Empire. On his trail is amateur detective Isidore Beautrelet, a high school boy determined to stop Lupin from completing the theft of a lifetime. Despite his youth and inexperience, he proves surprisingly capable of catching the gentleman thief. The Hollow Needle is a story of romance, mystery, and crime that continues to astound over a century after it was published. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Maurice Leblanc’s The Hollow Needle is a classic of French literature reimagined for modern readers.
