Alongside his job at Graham & Royce, Lester has a front-row seat to the murder trial of Wall Street multi-millionaire Hiram Holladay. The banker’s loving daughter, Frances, is the prime suspect. This captivating novel details Lester’s experience as he attempts to prove Frances’ innocence. Stevenson’s excellent characters, his thrilling plots, and clever descriptions make this an unmissable introduction to classic mystery for fans of Karen M. McManus’ ‘One of us is lying’. I took them and sat down; and just then the outer door slammed with a violence ex tremely unusual. I had never seen Mr. Royce, our junior, so deeply shaken, so visibly distracted, as he was when he burst in upon us a moment later, a newspaper in his hand. Mr. Graham, startled by the noise of his entrance, wheeled around from his desk and stared at him in astonishment. Book The Origins of the American Detective Story

Download or read book The Origins of the American Detective Story written by LeRoy Lad Panek and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-24 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Allan Poe essentially invented the detective story in 1841 with Murders in the Rue Morgue. In the years that followed, however, detective fiction in America saw no significant progress as a literary genre. Much to the dismay of moral crusaders like Anthony Comstock, dime novels and other sensationalist publications satisfied the public's hunger for a yarn. Things changed as the century waned, and eventually the detective was reborn as a figure of American literature. In part these changes were due to a combination of social conditions, including the rise and decline of the police as an institution; the parallel development of private detectives; the birth of the crusading newspaper reporter; and the beginnings of forensic science. Influential, too, was the new role model offered by a wildly popular British import named Sherlock Holmes. Focusing on the late 19th century and early 20th, this volume covers the formative years of American detective fiction.
