Book The Holistic Transformation of a Christian Black Woman Moving from Silent Lament to a Faith Filled Life

Download or read book The Holistic Transformation of a Christian Black Woman Moving from Silent Lament to a Faith Filled Life written by E. Montrez Nicholson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the black church, Black Christian women could not always lead from the front – even though black women attend church each week and are the biggest supporters of the church. This project will look at how creating a safe space for discussion with like-minded Black women helps them better understand themselves in God. Church for the Black woman has been a haven for decades. Nevertheless, there is still much brokenness in the pews. The author of this project looks at how hosting a book club will help women gain a new perspective on life. Utilizing a sacred book on any topic written by Black women would be engaging and informative. The discussions will occur in small group settings of no more than ten Black women interested in holistic healing in mind, body, soul, and spirit. The author’s goal in this intervention is to help Black Christian women move from silent lament to a faith-filled life. The author also believes this can assist Black Christian women in finding new ways to see God and the Holy Scriptures through everyday lived experiences as they share in honest and open dialogue. This safe space will promote a holistic introspective approach to spiritual transformation." -- Leaf [ii].

Book excerpt: Taking the necessary time to minister prayer and forgiveness for oneself is vital: it enables one to remain fresh and vibrant while ministering to others. In addition, it fosters both spiritual and physical wholeness, as well as personal integrity. Taking the necessary time to minister prayer and forgiveness for oneself is vital: it enables one to remain fresh and vibrant while ministering to others. In addition, it fosters both spiritual and physical wholeness, as well as personal integrity. An action the middle-aged African-American woman can take toward self-care is the act of letting go. It is imperative to self-care: an individual cannot receive anything when they are full—full of caring and attending to others as well as unsettled concerns, emotions, or thoughts. The ability to let go is essential to move to a place of wholeness; it creates the space that is needed to receive more. It is impossible to pour more into a full cup, the cup will overflow: letting go of past experiences creates room for the new to emerge. “Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them” (Isa. 42:9 [KJV]).

Book God Is a Black Woman

Download or read book God Is a Black Woman written by Christena Cleveland and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this timely, much-needed book, theologian, social psychologist, and activist Christena Cleveland recounts her personal journey to dismantle the cultural “whitemalegod” and uncover the Sacred Black Feminine, introducing a Black Female God who imbues us with hope, healing, and liberating presence. For years, Christena Cleveland spoke about racial reconciliation to congregations, justice organizations, and colleges. But she increasingly felt she could no longer trust in the God she’d been implicitly taught to worship—a white male God who preferentially empowered white men despite his claim to love all people. A God who clearly did not relate to, advocate for, or affirm a Black woman like Christena. Her crisis of faith sent her on an intellectual and spiritual journey through history and across France, on a 400-mile walking pilgrimage to the ancient shrines of Black Madonnas to find healing in the Sacred Black Feminine. God Is a Black Woman is the chronicle of her liberating transformation and a critique of a society shaped by white patriarchal Christianity and culture. Christena reveals how America’s collective idea of God as a white man has perpetuated hurt, hopelessness, and racial and gender oppression. Integrating her powerful personal story, womanist ideology, as well as theological, historical, and social science research, she invites us to take seriously the truth that God is not white nor male and gives us a new and hopeful path for connecting with the divine and honoring the sacredness of all Black people.

Not only does it expound on the powerful contributions made by women during the turn-of-the century America, but how their efforts have given birth to traditional proclivities that have caused great damage to the faith walk of many young women in the church. Terms such as "Covering," "Spiritual Mother-Father," and "Accountability" have been misused throughout the decades to keep many women in bondage without their knowledge; hence, the suffering and abuse that many young women commonly experience in these institutions. Book In My Grandmother s House Black Women Faith and the Stories We Inherit

Download or read book In My Grandmother s House Black Women Faith and the Stories We Inherit written by Yolanda Pierce and published by Broadleaf Books. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the most steadfast faith you'll ever encounter comes from a Black grandmother? The church mothers who raised Yolanda Pierce, dean of Howard University School of Divinity, were busily focused on her survival. In a world hostile to Black women's bodies and spirits, they had to be. Born on a former cotton plantation and having fled the terrors of the South, Pierce's grandmother raised her in the faith inherited from those who were enslaved. Now, in the pages of In My Grandmother's House, Pierce reckons with that tradition, building an everyday womanist theology rooted in liberating scriptures, experiences in the Black church, and truths from Black women's lives. Pierce tells stories that center the experiences of those living on the underside of history, teasing out the tensions of race, spirituality, trauma, freedom, resistance, and memory. A grandmother's theology carries wisdom strong enough for future generations. The Divine has been showing up at the kitchen tables of Black women for a long time. It's time to get to know that God.

Book excerpt: Today, racial wounds from three hundred years of slavery and a history of Jim Crow laws continue to impact the church in America. Martin Luther King Jr. captured this reality when he said: “The most segregated hour of Christian America is eleven o’clock on Sunday.” Equipped with the gospel, the evangelical church should be the catalyst for reconciliation, yet it continues to cultivate immense pain and division. Weep with Me by Mark Vroegop is a timely resource that presents lament as a bridge to racial reconciliation in the world today. In the Bible, lament is a prayer that leads to trust, which can be a starting point for the church to “weep with those who weep” (Rom. 12:15). As Vroegop writes: “Reconciliation in the church starts with tears and ends in trust.”
