Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hittites: The Story of a Forgotten Empire is a history text written by A.H. Sayce and an excellent example of the early historical research conducted on the topic. The Hittites were an Anatolian people living in what is now Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon. The empire started in the 18th century BCE, peaking in the 14th century BCE and finally trailing off around 1180 BCE with the collapse of the Bronze Age. Author Sayce traces the history of the Hittite people, attempting to demonstrate that this was an empire of significance that is not afforded the credit it deserves. The book begins with an analysis of the references to the Hittite people in The Bible, which is an oft-cited source of information throughout Sayce's work. Divided into chapters, the book goes on to explore topics such as Hittite monuments, the Hittite Empire, Hittite cities, Hittite religion and art, and the trade and industry of the Hittities, amongst other topics. Several illustrations are included, primarily of Hittite artifacts. The book concludes with a detailed index. Sayce's history of the Hittites is a commendable effort. The author uses the evidence available to create a compelling argument for the historical importance of the Hittite people. The book is well written and an enjoyable read. The Hittites: The Story of a Forgotten Empire will certainly appeal to history buffs and students. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hittites and Their Language IN 1887 I published a small volume on 'altaic Hieroglyphs and Hittite Inscriptions, ' now sold out. In this I explained the reasons for suppos ing this script to be decipherable by aid of Mongol speech, and added tentative renderings of some of the shorter texts; while the reader was duly warned that much time would elapse before final results, on the lines laid down, could be expected. I received kind encouragement from several well-known specialists to continue the study, which has now occupied me for ten years, with results which confirm the original suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Decipherment of the Hittite Hieroglyphics The new texts of 1911 from Carchemish do not differ outwardly to any great extent from those already known and published, for no bilingual was found. But a large and almost complete slab came to light inscribed with six lines of about six hundred closely-written Hittite characters, which ultimately formed the base of my decipherment, . And after several months' work on it I came to the conclusion that there were several kings' names concealed therein. Such results as I have embodied in this article differ almost entirely from previous systems of decipherment, and, omitting the obvious ideograms, I can agree only with a few of Professor Sayce's valuesl out of his whole syllabary, All credit is due to him for determinative for place-names: det. My aim has been to make the work as complete as possible, without unduly increasing its size or adding to its price. Other inscriptions have come to light in Hittite-land, but as yet they have not been copied or brought to this country; and Dr. Hayes Ward, just returned from the East, has given me a list of widely scattered Hittite monuments, which await the courageous explorer. Book The British Academy the Hittites

Download or read book The British Academy the Hittites written by A. E. Cowley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Academy the Hittites: The Schweich Lectures for 1918 These lectures were delivered in December 1918, but their publication has been delayed partly owing to difficulties about the strange characters, and partly owing to my other occupations. Nos. I and II now appear substantially as delivered; No. III has been somewhat expanded, and gives the main results of my own attempts at the decipherment of the hieroglyphics. I am anxious that they should be regarded only as lectures, intended rather to arouse interest in the subject than to satisfy it. In three hours it was not possible to do more than touch on some of the problems involved, and in several cases statements have been made which in a larger work would require modification or justification. It would have been more satisfactory to write a book on the subject, but even if I were competent to do so, the time has hardly come for fuller treatment. The material is only beginning to be accessible, and while these lectures were being printed, work has been done, which may modify some of my statements or arguments. This I have been obliged to leave out of consideration. Prof. Hrozny published Die Sprache der Hethiter (a full statement of his Indo-European theory) in 1917, and Hethitische Keilschrifttexte... mit Ubersetzung in 1919. He very kindly sent me these a short time ago, but it was then too late to incorporate any discussion of them. This matters the less, because an article was published in the Jras (1920, p. 49) by Sayce, who, while giving full credit to Hrozny for his great acuteness and undeniable success in elucidating parts of the texts, at the same time rejects altogether the Indo-European theory. About A. H. (Archibald Henry) Sayce, the Author: In 1874 Sayce published a long paper, 'The Astronomy and Astrology of the Babylonians' in Transactions of the Society of Biblical Archaeology vol. 3, part 1), with transcriptions and translations of the relevant cuneiform texts, that was one of the first articles to recognise and translate astronomical cuneiform texts. ...In 1882, in a lecture to the Society of Biblical Archaeology in London, he announced that the Hittites, far from being a small Canaanite tribe who dealt with the kings of the northern Kingdom of Israel, were the people of a 'lost Hittite empire, ' which Egyptian texts were then bringing to light.

I wonder if it will ever grow up to its name? At present it might be called Little Vic. Her thoughts were distracted by the white figure of her husband coming along the deck, and distinct against the other units in kharki as a white sheep amongst a flock of brown. He was immaculate, but cross, and one end of his moustache was caught between his teeth, and his handsome face looked darker than usual because he did not appear upon the edge of a smile, which was his normal expression. Download or read book The Land of the Hittites written by John Garstang and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of the Hittites: An Account of Recent Explorations and Discoveries in Asia Minor, With Descriptions of the Hittite Monuments Since Professor Sayce and Dr. Wright first called atten tion, more than thirty years ago, to the forgotten empire and civilisation of the Hittites, no book has appeared to keep the English reader abreast of the further informa tion which has since come to light upon that subject. In the meantime researches made by British and German explorers in northern Syria and Asia Minor, and the studies of numerous scholars who have applied them selves to this problem, have advanced the position so far that the Hittites are nebulous no longer, but stand revealed in the clear light of history, claiming the attention of all those interested in the story of the Bible Lands, of Asia Minor, and of early Greece. The position and character of Asia Minor lend a wide interest and charm to its past no less than its present. The present volume aims at filling the gap which has already grown too wide. It starts ab initio with a rapid survey of the Hittite lands, and an outline of their history. The Hittite monuments are then passed in review, each described separately and independently, in such a way as to be useful to any one visiting them in situ or in the museums of Constantinople and Berlin, where there are departments devoted specially to this branch of archaeology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rediscovery of the ancient empire of the Hittites has been a major achievement of the last hundred years. Known from the Old Testament as one of the tribes occupying the Promised Land, the Hittites were in reality a powerful neighbouring kingdom: highly advanced in political organization, administration of justice and military genius; with a literature inscribed in cuneiform writing on clay tablets; and with a rugged and individual figurative art, to be seen on stone monuments and on scattered rock faces in isolated areas. This classic account reconstructs, in fascinating detail, a complete and balanced picture of Hittite civilization, using both established and more recent sources.
