Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Virginia, Vol. 3 of 6: Virginia Since 1861 In relating the history of Virginia since 1861, within the brief compass of this volume, it has been my purpose to lead the reader along those highways which give visions of the past, make clearer the present, and point the way to the future. But I have often found it hard to resist the temptation of straying into the byways and hedges with alluring incidents and anecdotes, which would be well worth recording. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Virginia, for the Use of Schools In the preparation of this volume for the use of schools, I have been actuated by an earnest desire to place before her youth a faithfiil record of the past history of the old Mother of States and Statesmen, a record so full of honor that her children may well be proud of it. I have attempted no dry details, no po litical dissertations, but have adopted the familiar style of a story-teller, drawing from the stores of incident, in which the past of Virginia is so rich, such narrations as would be most apt to stamp upon the youthful mind the graver facts of history, interspersing such explana tions as were absolutely necessary with a simplicity and clearness which will I hope, render them easy of com prehension even to the youngest student of these pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Virginia, Vol. 1 of 6: Colonial Period, 1607-1763 The first century and a half of Virginia's Colonial History, the period described in this volume, was crowded with events of extraor dinary variety and far - descending influence. The eighteen years of the London Company's existence saw the erection on the banks of the James of the first permanent English settlement in the Western Hemisphere; the meeting at Jamestown of the earliest representative assembly to convene within the present area of the United States; the establishment of the first civil and criminal courts; the first trial by jury; the first grant of separate titles to land; the planting of the first staple crops; the manufacture of the first merchantable articles; the building of the first church; and the construction of the first dwelling-house. The era of Nathaniel Bacon made up another interval of supreme importance, for it was then that the first armed blow on a large scale was struck on American soil for the preservation of the rights of the common people and for their equality before the law. Subsequently, it was during the administrations of Culpeper and Effingham that the Virginians contended, with indomitable courage and persistence, for the inherited, and inalienable, and sole right of their General Assemblies to impose taxes and originate the measures necessary for the proper government of their local affairs. And next, it was during the administrations of Spotswood and Gooch that the first great movement of population westward began, never to pause until the shores of the Pacific were reached; and it was during this interval, also, that the' Dissenters carried on their noble struggle for religious liberty, which was to end, at a later day, in a splendid triumph. And, finally, it was during the administrations of Din widdie and Fauquier that the expansion of the French Power towards the Alleghanies was permanently halted. All these dramatic and pregnant episodes were, by their transmitted influence, to make a profound impression on the character and career of the great Republic which now dominates the Western Hemisphere, and they are, there fore, entitled to a discriminating study as much from a national, as from a Virginian, point of view. I have not lost sight of' this larger significance in my treatment of the different aspects of my central theme, whether it deals with the facts in the ordinary current of events, or with the qualities of the men who played the chief part during the years of the colonial period. Download or read book Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by Lyon Gardiner Tyler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Vol. 4 In volumes I., II. And III. Of this work, Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, the editor, Dr. Lyon G. Tyler, acted as author, and undertook to cover the history of Virginia through biographies of its eminent citizens. He was candid in saying that he did not assume to set forth all the men of prominence that figured in that wide field of centuries of human effort. Probably this was impossible under any circum stances. His labors are supplemented with volumes IV. And V., which will doubtless be generally regarded as a valuable adjunct to those which precede them. In regard to these volumes, Dr. Tyler has only acted as general editor, and is not responsible for any of the sketches, or facts contained in them. This department has been pre pared in large part by our regular staff writers, written from data obtained from reli able sources, or, in most instances. Furnished by members of the family in interest. In all cases the sketch was submitted in typewritten form to the proper representative for inspection and revision.
