This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Vermont With Descriptions, Physical and Topographical The Rev. Hosea Beckley, for many years a distinguished clergyman of this state, was the author of the following work, which he had nearly prepared for the press, some two years since, and had obtained a large list of subscribers for the book, when he was suddenly arrested by death - leaving no other patrimony to his bereaved family but this work in manuscript, upon which he had bestowed years of labor, and which is now published for the benefit of his widow. The work is given entire as it was left by Mr. Beckley, the publisher not deeming himself authorized to alter the manuscript from the condition in which it was left by the author. The only thing done, except copying for the press, has been in one or two instances, to bring the narrative down to the close of the last year; and to arrange the chapters in the order, in which the subjects treated of in them seemed to require, as they were left by Mr. Beckley, owing probably to his sudden demise, without being numbered, or placed in their proper order. Book Geography History and Civil Government of Vermont Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geography History and Civil Government of Vermont Classic Reprint written by Edward Conant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography, History and Civil Government of Vermont This book has been prepared as a text book for schools. The work has been done with the conviction that while fullness is desirable, brevity is necessary. In the Geography an attempt has been made to exhibit Vermont in its relations to other portions Of the country, both contiguous and remote. TO that end, three maps were introduced. The first and second Of these show the position of the State with respect to some Of the great, routes of travel across the continent; while the third shows some commercial rela tions Of high importance to our industries, and equally it shows our relation to some of the chief centers of American civilization. The next four maps illustrate different phases of our Geography. The map entitled Political Divisions shows every town and gore in the State, the probate dis tricts, the counties, the congressional districts. The last map illustrates the history that follows. It is believed that this use of several maps has decided advantages over any larger maps that could be introduced in such a book. The description of the mountains and valleys and of the waters of the State is the result of considerable Observation and some reading; and it is believed to present the funda mental conceptions necessary to a clear understanding Of our Geography and History. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Vermont, From Its First Settlement to the Present Time: With a Geographical Account of the Country, and a View of Its Original Inhabitants, for the Use of Schools Tan importance of early obtaining a correct knowledge of the History of our own country, and more especially of the events which have distinguished, and the fortunes which have attended the State to which we belong, is universally felt and acknowledged. It has long been a matter of regret, that the means Of se quiring this knowledge, with regard to Vermont, have been very imperfect. The fact, that no work of this kind adapt ed to the use of schools has been previously laid before the publick, will be a sufficient apology for the present publi cation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early History of Vermont This volume has been written to give to the public an accurate account of the early history of Vermont when it was called New Hampshire Grants and New Connecticut, and down to the time that the State was admitted into the Union in 1791. The writer has not created any fiction for the book, but facts have been related that are more interesting and useful than fiction, to Ver mouters. It may lack the polish that some literary writers would give it. The most of it has been prepared for the press during the past year in bits of time that the writer has been able to snatch from pressing professional business. The reader will find accurately stated the action of the hardy pioneers that resulted in establishing the State amid the greatest difficulties in a dense wilder ness, beset with dangers from hostile Indians, and bitter Opposition from the people of neigh boring territory, and the British army. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Appendix to the History of Vermont, Natural, Civil and Statistical, 1853 When the History of Vermont, to which this is an Appendix, was published, in 1842, the boundary line between the United States and the British provinces was um settled, and in dispute between the two governments but in the latter part of the summer of that year, the matter was ami eably arranged by a treaty, formed by Mr. Webster and Lord Ashburton, and ratified by the two governments. The northern boundary of the state was intended to be along the 45th parallel of latitude, and was supposed to be on that parallel till the sur. Vey of 1818 proved the 45th parallel to be some distance to the southward of what had been previously regarded as the northern boundary of the state, cutting off a strip through the whole width, varying from one-fourth of a mile to a few rods. By the treaty, the northern boundary of the state was established upon the old well known line, without reference to the 45th parallel. This line was marked in 1845, by cutting away the timber, where it passed through forests, and by putting up cast iron posts at short distances through its whole length. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Vermont Ust as the sun was sinking in the west one summer afternoon long ago a band of Indians paddled their canoes along the edge of a beautiful lake in the heart of the woods. Slowly and cautiously they oated on, stealing their silent way under the shelter of the shore as if expecting the approach of an enemy. Yet though their course was cautiously chosen, there was less of apprehension than of curiosity in the gaze with which they scanned the horizon to the northward; for this was a strong war party of tried and chosen braves, who bore themselves with the air of men used to victory.
