Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ulster, From the Earliest Times, to the Present Day, Vol. 3 The trial and death of Strafford belong rather to English than to Irish history, but so commanding a personality cannot be permitted to disappear from these pages without any reference to the fate that awaited the lord-lieutenant of Ireland on his arrival in London. The Long Parliament was opened on the grd of November, 1640, and one of its first acts was the impeachment of Strafford. Many of the charges against him related to his Irish administration, but the most serious of them, in the eyes of the Puritans, were his attempts to establish the arbitrary power of the Crown and his enrolment of an army of Irish Papists, which he was accused of intending to bring over to support the King against his subjects in England. A deputation from the Irish Parliament, which had SO recently lauded him, arrived with a remonstrance of grievances against him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ulster, From the Earliest Times, to the Present Day, Vol. 2 After an imprisonment of five years and three months Hugh Roe found means to escape. The story of his escape is best given by the Four Masters, who for this period may be considered contemporary writers; and it is, as Professor Richey says, especially interesting, as it enables us to gain an insight into the feelings of the native Irish. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ulster, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day F mm the very slender evidence we possess, based chie y on antiquarian research in connection with the etymology of local names, it appears that the earliest inhabitants of Ireland were of Turanian origin and known as Fomorians. How long they held possession it is impossible to discover, but they gave way before a Belgic race bearing the not very euphonious name of Firbolgs, who in their turn were con quered by a fresh tribe of invaders, the tuatha-da-danaans, said to have been of Pelasgic origin, but who are now believed to have been an Aryan Celtic race, a branch of that great stock which dominated Gaul and Spain and a large part of Southern Europe. The Danaans are said to have held the country, which they completely conquered and occupied, for one hundred and ninety years. They are a Shadowy race of whom even less is known than of their predecessors the Firbolgs, but their deeds are held to be less adumbrative than their names, for forts of earth and stone and sepulchral monuments on the River Boyne in Meath are said, with some Show of truth, to be the work of their hands. But although they were strong men and great fighters the Danaans were themselves conquered by the Milesians or Scoti, a race of warlike Celts from Spain, of which land they had been rulers for generations. This Milesian conquest seems to have been a real occurrence, notwithstanding the fact that the statements made by Keating with regard to it savour too much of romance and severely tax the credulity of his readers. For instance, we are told that the Milesians were Scythians, and that one of their leaders, Niall, married Scota, daughter of Pharaoh, and be friended Moses and the Israelites. This friendliness to a persecuted race led Pharaoh to banish Niall and his fol lowers, and after many wanderings they landed in Spain. Download or read book History of Ireland from the Earliest Times to the Present Day Vol 3 1547 to 1649 Classic Reprint written by Edward Alfred D'Alton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-27 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Ireland, From the Earliest Times to the Present Day, Vol. 3: 1547 to 1649 The period covered by Volume II was for Ireland a period of storm and struggle and suffering. The strife of race had become intensified and embittered by a strife of religion, for England had definitely cut herself off from Rome, and had even become one of the great champions of Protestantism, while Ireland still clung to the Catholic faith. Religious toleration had then made little progress. Neither France nor Spain was willing to tolerate any religion but Catholicism, and, in consequence, history has to condemn the horrors of the Inquisition, and the banishment of the Huguenots. Nor would England allow her subjects to be anything but Protestants. Even the non-conforming Protestants laboured under disabilities; but the Catholics, above all, were trampled on and oppressed. Their attachment to Rome was held to be inconsistent with being loyal subjects; and for such dis loyalty no punishment was too severe. Without making allow ance for difference of racial temperament, the Englishmen of that time, as previously, thought that what was good for England was also good for Ireland. They regarded Irish customs as rude, the Irish language as a barbarous tongue, and the Irishman's religionficatholicity - as superstition and idolatry. The people who clung to these deserved little mercy, and often got neither mercy nor justice; they were deemed unworthy of getting the status of English subjects, as they were unworthy to be left in possession of their lands. And hence the Plantation of Ulster, the attempted confiscations of Strafford, the savageries of Crom well, and the horrors of the penal laws.
