Book The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society Vol 2 of 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society Vol 2 of 5 Classic Reprint written by G. G. Findlay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society, Vol. 2 of 5 The second volume of this History is wholly devoted to missionary service in the West India Islands. It contains the record of a work as full of courage and devotion, as instinct with true romance, as any that we Shall find in the several fields in which the people called Methodists have given their contribution to the message of the Christian Church. If in these latter days this field has seemed to lack the attractiveness of its earlier days, and the joy of abundant harvest which once it knew, there is all the more need that the fascinating story of its past should be fully set forth. It is well known that the gifted scholar whose work is here given to the world so felt the charm of this field that he said that if he were beginning his ministry, and were called to Choose a field of service, he would offer to serve in the West Indies. That charm remains and though dark and cloudy skies have gathered over this Mission Field, we cannot doubt that the seed sown with such unstinting hands and with hearts so lavish of their love will yet appear in a Church worthy of its history to the praise and glory of God. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society, Vol. 1 of 5 The Centenary History of the Wesleyan Missionary Society was projected as an integral part of the celebrations of 1913, and the work of abstracting reports and manuscripts was entrusted to the Rev. W. C. Bourne. A considerable amount of preparatory work was thus accomplished. The work then passed into the hands of the Rev. G. G. Findlay, D.D., at that time the Professor of New Testament Language and Literature in the Headingley College. This appointment at once met with hearty and universal approval. Dr. Findlay brought to the work not only the trained mind and finished style of the scholar, but also a sympathy with foreign missionary work, and a comprehensive outlook upon the whole range of Church activities, such as commanded the reverent admiration of all. His capacity for research, his appreciation of the value of detail, and his grasp of the whole, indicated an ideal historian, and the depth of his personal devotion ensured that the work of recording the sacrifice and service of faith would be worthily accomplished. He gave himself up to the work with whole-hearted enthusiasm, assisted by his talented daughter, who had herself served as a Missionary in India. The work of examining and collating the manuscript records which contained the earliest history of the Missionary Society was enough to baffle most men, but Dr. Findlay's industry and skill were equal to the task, and his work in this particular alone will remain not the least of many monuments by which he will be remembered. But the thoroughness and completeness of his method became a difficulty, and it soon became apparent that the History would not be ready for publication in the Centenary year. At the same time it was felt - and by none more strongly than by Dr. Findlay - that the Wesleyan Church possessed in these records a wealth of which it was scarcely aware. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society, Vol. 5 of 5 This volume describes the work of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society in Ceylon, India, and China. With its publication the Centenary History of that Society comes to its close. I would now acknowledge the help so freely and generously given to me in the course of its compilation. So many have assisted and encouraged me in different ways that a full enumeration would crowd this page with names. Special mention, however, must be made of the officers of the Society and of the Rev. W. H. Thorp and of Messrs. E. E. Genner and G. Vanner Rowe, who have read different volumes in proof. From Miss Findlay I have received dossiers and other compilations which have greatly lightened my labour. With out these documents it would have been impossible to complete the work within the time. The Chronological Table is the work of Miss A. B. Cooke, my greatly esteemed colleague in the Mysore District. In view of the rapidly changing life of the East I have thought it desirable to supplement what I have written by special chapters on the Christian Church in China and India. These have been contributed respectively by the Revs. H. B. Ratten bury and E. W. Thompson. The chapter on the Ceylonese Ministry is the work of the Revs. E. Middleton Weaver and W. J. Noble. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society, Vol. 3 of 5 Not till 1795 was a successor to Governor Phillip appointed meanwhile a military ring established themselves in power, who substituted martial for civil law, and took measures to secure a monopoly of trade, which they shamelessly exploited. Against this faction, which secured powerful allies in England and debauched the Colony, successive Governors contended in vain. Probably no other British Colony has ever fallen into a condition so debased and disgraceful as that in which the settlement of New South Wales existed for sixteen years after lieutenant-colonel Phillip's departure. Moral restraints and the common decencies of life were cast aside. Rum was recognized as the ordinary medium of exchange. The more desperate convicts escaped, and lived in the wilds as marauding bush-rangers.' Not a few who had been emancipated returned to their evil ways floggings and hangings failed to suppress the crimes of violence with which the Colony was rife. Sydney, and the little towns about it, were like unto Gomorrha.' At length the scandal of New South Wales became intolerable the inquiry instituted in t8ob, on the recall of Governor Bligh, who had been actually put under arrest and deposed by the military commandant, led to drastic changes and Lieutenant Lachlan Macquarie, who ruled the Colony from 1809 to 1821, was placed in effective authority. With the aid of the more respectable settlers, whose numbers were steadily increasing, he succeeded in putting the affairs of New South Wales upon a sound basis, and earned the title of 'father of the Colony.' But the character of its first batch of immigrants, and the abuses which prevailed during the time of military ascendancy, left their mark in the history of New South Wales, and on the character of early Australian society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Wesleyan Methodism, Vol. 2 Methodism during Wesley's Life - Necessity for Change in the System after his Death - Further Causes of Developement - These rendered more potent by the Character of the Societies - The Principle of Methodist Developement arose out of the Operation of a divine Purpose - No systematic Action taken to establish an improved Polity - The Result of this peculiar State of the Connexion. Our preceding researches have fully established the fact, that Methodism, throughout the lifetime of Wesley, mainly consisted in a series of efforts to evangelize the benighted nominal Christians of our country, and to lead them to the experience of inward godliness, and the practice of outward holiness. All that Wesley did in the way of organization, was not designed to work out any pre conceived plan, or to establish any particular system, but to save souls from the guilt and power of sin, and to train them up for heaven. This being the case, it cannot be any cause of wonder, that his death rendered very important changes necessary. As the working out of a system was not his ruling object.
