If I have been somewhat presumptuous in taking this duty upon my own shoulders so soon after my coming to the town, it may possibly be accepted as a plea in extenuation that there was little likelihood of any one else attempting it. The book explores every aspect of this changing scene, from the towns and poor upland farms of early modern Cumbria to life in the teeming communities of late Victorian Tyneside. In their final chapters the authors review the modern decline of these traditional industries and the erosion of many of the region's historical characteristics.

Book The A Z of Curious County Durham

Download or read book The A Z of Curious County Durham written by Martin Dufferwiel and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws upon the varied history and unique heritage of the County Palatine of Durham, an ancient land of saints and warlords. It is a catalogue of curious tales, odd anecdotes and quirky characters from County Durham's past. Within its pages the reader will discover stories of hauntings, murders and mysterious deaths, while modern-day enigmas – such as the ancient structure that archaeologists remain at a loss to explain, or the lost treasure found at the bottom of the River Wear – are revisited. Inspired in part by the chronicles and compendiums of County Durham's nineteenth-century historians and antiquarians, this book is a miscellany – at times tragic, at times comic, but always entertaining. And for those for whom the collective subjects hold a perennial fascination, it is ideal for dipping into, perhaps to learn something new about wonderfully curious County Durham.

Book Mining and Social Change Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Mining and Social Change Routledge Revivals written by Martin Bulmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strong community ties of mining villages are the central concern of this book, which deals with the social history and sociology of mining in County Durham in the twentieth century. Focusing on the country as a whole, this title, first published in 1978, asks what is most distinctive about the area in the past and how it is changing in the present. The personal documents presented in the first chapters of the book bring to life the local mining community with an evocative picture of village life at the turn of the century. These first-hand accounts are integrated with the results of social research carried out at Durham University over a number of years. Mining and Social Change will be of interest to students of history and sociology.
