Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1887, the author has drawn on a variety of sources to present a history of the Shawangunk region (pronounced "Shon-gum") and its early settlers. Like so many 19th century local histories, this blood-soaked account of Indian rampages and depredations preserves the glory days of the colonial era. Accounts of the Esopus Wars, Huguenot settlers, Tom Quick, Indian massacres, Catherine DuBois, the Battle of Minisink, and other important events of the colonial and Revolutionary era are presented with spirit and style. The book also preserves a variety of tales relating to important regional landmarks, such as Sam's Point, The Traps, and New Paltz. There are about a dozen original illustrations. This masterfully crafted eBook faithfully preserves the 1887 edition in its entirety, including illustrations and footnotes which have been eliminated from modern reprints. It is fully searchable and fully printable. (209pp, 2.13 Mb)

Book A History of the Wallkill Central Schools

Download or read book A History of the Wallkill Central Schools written by A.J. Schenkman and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Borden family arrived in the nineteenth century, educational opportunities in Ulster County were limited; classes rarely extended beyond the eighth grade. This changed when the philanthropic Bordens established their Borden Condensed Milk Company and gave Wallkill the means to construct one of the area's first high schools. In 1938, Central School District No. 1--incorporating the towns of Shawangunk, Plattekill, Gardiner, Marlborough, Newburgh and Montgomery--was formed after residents voted to consolidate the John G. Borden High School with surrounding one- and two-room schoolhouses. Although those early schoolhouses are now long gone, the proud tradition of education and service carries on in the Leptondale, Clare F. Ostrander and Plattekill Elementary Schools; the John G. Borden Middle School; and the Wallkill Senior High School. Local educators A.J. Schenkman and Elizabeth Werlau explore Wallkill Central School District's seventy-five years of educational excellence.

Book The Gunks Shawangunk Mountains Ridge and Valley Towns Through Time

Download or read book The Gunks Shawangunk Mountains Ridge and Valley Towns Through Time written by Ronald G. Knapp and published by America Through Time. This book was released on 2015 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Shawangunk Mountains -- The Gunks -- are renowned for stunning landscapes on and off the ridge in a region that has remained a favorite destination for visitors since the middle of the nineteenth century. While the mountain elevations are not high -- nowhere exceeding 2,240 feet -- they present rugged topography with glistening grey-white escarpments, jumbled boulders at the base of cliffs, deep crevices, as well as precipitation-fed "sky lakes." Arnold Guyot, the first Professor of Geology and Geography at Princeton University, remarked in 1887 that "Few spots on our continent unite so much beauty of scenery, both grand and lovely, within so small a compass, to be enjoyed with so much ease," a sentiment echoed by many today. Framing the Gunks are the valleys of the Rondout Creek and the Wallkill River where one finds New Paltz, which lays claim to being "one of the oldest towns in America" because of the stone houses aligned along Huguenot Street, as well as quaint hamlets like Gardiner, Rosendale, Accord, High Falls, and Marbletown. For the most part, these are lively, even cosmopolitan places, a mixture of old families and newcomers, many of whom arrived as second-homers from new York City."--Back cover.
