This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Thirty Years War in Germany, Vol. 2 of 2 The glorious victory of Gustavus Adolphus had effected a great change in the conduct of that monarch, and in the opinion which both his friends and his enemies entertained of him. He had confronted himself with the greatest general of the age, and by the force of his tactics and Swedish valour, conquered the Imperial troops, the best in Europe. From that instant he relied upon himself, and self-reliance has ever been the, parent of great actions. Had not Alexander's impetuosity triumphed upon the Granicus, never had that conqueror overturned the Persian empire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Cyclopedia of History, Vol. 2: Containing, Schiller's History of the Thirty Years' War; Creasy's Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World Roman Catholic Church in Germany is still held fast; and precarious, indeed, would be its situation were this anchor to give way. The principal of the Ecclesiastical Reservation was strongly opposed by the Protestants; and though it was atlast adopted into the treaty of peace, its insertion was qualified with the declaration, that parties had come to no final determination on the point. Could it then be more binding on the Protestant's than Ferdinand's guarantee in favor of Protestant subjects of ecclesi astieni states was upon the Roman Catholics Thus were two import-ant subjects of dispute left unsettled in the treaty of peace, and by them the war was rekindled. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Works of Frederick Schiller, Vol. 2: The Thirty Years' War; Trial of Counts Egmont and Horn; The Siege of Antwerp The consternation Of the Emperor and of the Catholic League, at the defeat Of Tilly at Leipzig, could scarcely exceed the surprise and embarrass ment Of the Swedish allies at the King's unexpect ed success; which had exceeded alike their ex pectations, and their wishes. The formidable army which had impeded his progress, set bounds to his ambition, and rendered him in some measure dependent on themselves, was at once annihilated. Without a rival, or an Opponent who could make head against him, he had now gained a firm footing in the heart of Germany; nothing could Oppose his progress, or bound his encroachments. If, in the intoxication Of success, he should be in clined to abuse his victory. If they had formerly dreaded the preponderance of the Emperor, there was now equal reason for apprehending the des truction of the constitution of the Empire by a foreign invader, and the ruin of the Catholic Church in Germany by the religious zeal Of a Protestant monarch. The distrust and jealousy of some Of the combined powers, which had for a time been set at rest by the stronger feeling of dread Of the Emperor, was now rekindled; and scarcely had Gustavus Adolphus justified the confidence re posed on him by his courage and success, when they began to oppose every Obstacle to his plans. Book Telling Tales

  • Pages : 476 pages

Download or read book Telling Tales written by David Blamires and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germany has had a profound influence on English stories for children. The Brothers Grimm, The Swiss Family Robinson and Johanna Spyri's Heidi quickly became classics but, as David Blamires clearly articulates in this volume, many other works have been fundamental in the development of English chilren's stories during the 19th Centuary and beyond. Telling Tales is the first comprehensive study of the impact of Germany on English children's books, covering the period from 1780 to the First World War. Beginning with The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, moving through the classics and including many other collections of fairytales and legends (Musaus, Wilhelm Hauff, Bechstein, Brentano) Telling Tales covers a wealth of translated and adapted material in a large variety of forms, and pays detailed attention to the problems of translation and adaptation of texts for children. In addition, Telling Tales considers educational works (Campe and Salzmann), moral and religious tales (Carove, Schmid and Barth), historical tales, adventure stories and picture books (including Wilhelm Busch's Max and Moritz) together with an analysis of what British children learnt through textbooks about Germany as a country and its variegated history, particularly in times of war.

Book German Histories in the Age of Reformations 1400 1650

Download or read book German Histories in the Age of Reformations 1400 1650 written by Thomas A. Brady and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-13 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the connections between the political reform of the Holy Roman Empire and the German lands around 1500 and the sixteenth-century religious reformations, both Protestant and Catholic. It argues that the character of the political changes (dispersed sovereignty, local autonomy) prevented both a general reformation of the Church before 1520 and a national reformation thereafter. The resulting settlement maintained the public peace through politically structured religious communities (confessions), thereby avoiding further religious strife and fixing the confessions into the Empire's constitution. The Germans' emergence into the modern era as a people having two national religions was the reformation's principal legacy to modern Germany.

Book The Atlantic and Its Enemies A Personal History of the Cold War Volume 2 of 2 Large Print 16pt

Download or read book The Atlantic and Its Enemies A Personal History of the Cold War Volume 2 of 2 Large Print 16pt written by Norman Stone and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Those who survived the Second World War stared out onto a devastated, morally ruined world. Much of Europe and Asia had been so ravaged that it was unclear whether any form of normal life could ever be established again - coups, collapsing empires and civil wars, some on a vast scale, continued to reshape country after country long after the fighting was meant to have ended. Everywhere the 'Atlantic' world (the USA, Britain and a handful of allies) was on the defensive and its enemies on the move. For every Atlantic success there seemed to be a dozen Communist or 'Third World' successes, as the USSR and its proxies crushed dissent and humiliated the United States on both military and cultural grounds. For all the astonishing productivity of the American, Japanese and mainland western European economies (setting aside the fiasco of Britain's implosion), most of the world was either under Communist rule or lost in a violent stagnancy that seemed doomed to permanence. Even in the late 1970s, with the collapse of Iran, the oil shock and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the initiative seemed to lie with the Communist forces. Then, suddenly, the Atlantic won - economically, ideologically, militarily - with astonishing speed and completeness."--Jacket.

Book A History of the Reformation Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book A History of the Reformation Vol 2 of 2 written by Thomas M. Lindsay and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Reformation, Vol. 2 of 2: The Reformation in Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Scotland and England, the Anabaptist and Socinian Movements, the Counter-Reformation I have purposely given a larger space to the beginnings of each movement, believing them to be less known and more deserving of study. One omission must be noted. Nothing has been said directly about the Reformed Churches in Bohemia, Hungary, and the neighbouring lands. It would have been easy to devote a few pages to the subject; but such a brief description would have been misleading. The rise, continuance, and decline of these Churches are so inseparably connected with the peculiar social and political conditions of the countries, that no adequate or informing account of them could be given without largely exceeding the limits of space at my disposal. After the volume had been fully printed, and addition or alteration was impossible, two important documents bearing on subjects discussed came into my hands too late for references in the text. I have found that the Library of the Technical College in Glasgow contains a copy, probably unique, of the famous Hymn-book of the Brethren published at Ulm in 1538. An. MDXXXVIII. I know of a copy of much later date in Nurnberg; but of no perfect copy of this early impression. It is sufficient to say that the book confirms what I have said of the character of the religion of the Brethren. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The definitive cookbook on French cuisine for American readers: "What a cookbook should be: packed with sumptuous recipes, detailed instructions, and precise line drawings. Julia Child, Simone Beck, and Louisette Bertholle break down the classic foods of France into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of dishes—from historic Gallic masterpieces to the seemingly artless perfection of a dish of spring-green peas. Throughout, the focus is on key recipes that form the backbone of French cookery and lend themselves to an infinite number of elaborations—bound to increase anyone’s culinary repertoire. “Julia has slowly but surely altered our way of thinking about food. She has taken the fear out of the term ‘haute cuisine.’ She has increased gastronomic awareness a thousandfold by stressing the importance of good foundation and technique, and she has elevated our consciousness to the refined pleasures of dining." —Thomas Keller, The French Laundry
