Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland, Vol. 2 of 4: From the Restoration to the Revolution Were we to form an estimate of Mr Wodrow's History, by the rules which rhetoricians have laid down for historical composition, we should be apt to draw most unfavourable conclusions. If that alone is entitled to the name of History which bears its reader along with the flow of a regular and well-compacted narrative; which descends not to the minutiae of private and domestic life; and which gives us the substance and the results of information acquired, rather than the information itself; then, most assuredly, will the work of our venerable author be found to occupy no very lofty niche in the gallery of historical portraiture. But it is the part of candour to judge of a work, not by a standard of our own, however just and equitable it may be, but by a fair and impartial estimate of the object which the author had in his eye at the time, and of the fidelity with which that object has been realized. Had the "History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland" been composed according to the rules laid down by the critics, and so admirably exemplified by many ancient and many modern names, we might unquestionably have had a better written narrative; but the church and the world would have lost much by the exchange. As the case actually stands, we have presented to us a most valuable depository of minute and well-authenticated facts, bearing with more or less aptitude on the general character of the period. We have a most exact and vivid picture of the manners of the age; and sketches of the leading individuals drawn to the life, in their actions and habits. We are admitted behind the scenes, and favoured with a view of the ever shifting agency by which the machine of public affairs is kept in play. We see passing in array before us, not only the great actors on the stage, but their less prominent, though not less important minions; while the great public men themselves arc stripped of their assumed disguise, and exhibited exactly as they are. The stately march of national events is so associated with the incidents of private and familiar life, as to produce a result not altogether in harmony with the established rules of historical composition, and yet singularly advantageous to the real student of human character. It is not the political, nor the literary, nor the constitutional, nor even the merely ecclesiastical history of the period that is given; but while there is a mixture more or less of them all, there is what the author had professedly in his eye throughout, the internal "history of the sufferings of the church," both in its associated capacity, and in the experience of individuals. The rigid historian might have confined him self almost exclusively to the first of these, and on this principle an interesting narrative might have been formed. But it is by the union of both objects that our historian has realized his own judiciously selected plan, and now stands forth to our merited regard as the only minute, and comprehensive, and faithful annalist of the period. Such another historian of the eventful era, from 1638 to 1660, is still a desideratum in our national literature; and I verily believe, that with all their prejudices, the Scotts and the Sharpes, and the Russels, and the Pearsons, of anti-covenanting celebrity, would be quite overjoyed to meet with such another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland From the Restoration to the Revolution, Vol. 4 of 4 The nature of persecution is progressive and growing, and it can scarce be otherwise; one sin is a native inlet unto another, and the wicked wax worse and worse. Malice, envy, and enmity, against religion and its followers, are insatiable; and the Lord in the depth of his righteous judgment, suffers sinners to harden themselves, and go on from evil to worse, till their cup fill. Success in sin emboldeneth the actors, and thirst after blood, like a fever, still increases till a crisis happen. Accordingly, the reader will find a cruel oppressive spirit mightily upon the increase in Scotland, this year: the work is turning easy, hardships upon Presbyterians ordinary, and the trade is gainful to not a few. Towards the end of the year, a vast many gentlemen, formerly out of their reach, were attacked, and the prospect of having a share of swinging fines, as good, if not better, as forfeitures, made the sentences go glibly on. Some of the best of the nation were attacked, and the duke of York had every thing going in Scotland, according to his wish. We have this year a new scene of blood, and public executions were frequent; and, during this summer, murders in cold blood in the fields are beginning, and we shall meet with great numbers of them next year. The universal pressing of the test, was a noble handle for persecution. Fines and banishments are most frequent. The garrisons and lesser courts, by citations and searches, harass the country; and the larger circuits bring persons of better quality to a great deal of trouble. Great numbers of gentlemen of note and rank, are most exorbitantly fined, to the value of their real estates; and this year is shut up with the martyrdom of that excellent and extraordinary person the laird of Jerviswood. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland From the Restoration to the Revolution, Vol. 1 of 4 Mr. Jasies Wodrow, the father of the Historian, was born at Eaglesham in the neighbourhood of Glasgow, on the 2d of January 1637. He passed through the regular course of study at the university of Glasgow, and took his degree of A. M. in 1659, with the high approbation of principal Gillespie, and the other members of the senatus. He forthwith entered on the study of divinity under professors Baillie and Young, and was soon distinguished by his high attainments in theological literature. Although ready for license in the course of a few years, his ideas of the sacred office were so solemn, and the difficulties attending its right discharge appeared to him so numerous and so great, especially in those days of persecution, that it required the earnest expostulations of some of the most eminent ministers of the day to induce him to become a candidate for the holy ministry. Among those who urged him to take license in the presbyterian church, then passing into the vale of tears, was the justly venerated Mr. Robert Blair, one of the ministers of St. Andrews, who after hearing one day from Mr. Wodrow the reason of that self-diffidence which kept him back from the public service of the church, thus addressed him in reply; "Be not discouraged: your timidity will gradually lessen, and although it should not entirely wear off, yet it will not marr you," adding in an easy facetious manner, "I'se tell you for your encouragement, I have been now nearly forty years in the ministry, and the third bell scarce ever begins to toll when I am to preach, but my heart plays dunt, dunt, dunt." A solemnly affecting interview which had with Mr. James Guthrie of Stirling, in the tolbooth of Edinburgh, on the night before his execution, appears to have had a very salutary effect on the mind of Mr. Wodrow; and although the persecuted state of th church, consequent on the restoration of the Stuarts, opposed additional obstacles to his entrance on the public ministry, he was most usefully employed in the prosecution of his private studies, while residing for some considerable time at Car-donald near Paisley, as tutor to the young lord Blantyre. It was not till the 29th February, 1673, that he received license from a class of persecuted presbyterian ministers in the west of Scotland; whose high testimony to his eminent attainments and character is recorded in the memoirs of his life, and stands as a very interesting memorial of the good men of those troublous times. He preached with great acceptance and usefulness among the persecuted presbyterians of the west; associated freely with ministers of both the well known classes of indulged and not indulged; and met with much opposition from the common enemy, making many very narrow escapes from his iron grasp. In 1687, he settled in Glasgow, at the request of the synod of the bounds, and took charge of a small class of students in divinity who were preparing for the ministry among the presbyterians of Scotland. In May 1688, he was called to be one of the ministers of the city, and this office he held with distinguished reputation for four 3 ears. In 1692, he was elected to be professor of divinity in the college; and in consequence of this, resigned his pastoral charge. The same diligence and pious zeal which distinguished his ministrations, continued to characterize him as a theological professor. In the various departments of public lecturing examination of students, hearing and criticising discourses, discussing cases of casuistry, daily conference with students on the subject of personal religion, and correspondence with them when absent, on the progress of their studies; - he found enough, and more than enough, to engage all his powers and all his time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland, Vol. 3 of 4: From the Restoration to the Revolution The large accounts given in the former books, may let the reader into somewhat of the state of things and persons in Scotland, under the black period I now enter upon: the former scene was dark enough, and the rigours and severities of natively paved the way for more horrid things in the years before me. Since Pentland engagement till this period, it was comparatively but a few who were banished, and suffered unto blood; and there was some kind of shadow from the present iniquitous laws, to countenance what was done this way: but in the period we are now entering upon, besides the new barbarous laws made, the execution of them was bloody and very extensive; and the blood-thirsty executioners, in many cases, gave not themselves the trouble to keep by their own laws, but harassed and murdered in the public roads, open elds, and almost everywhere upon the south side of Tay. A very small part of this inhumanity can now be represented, in comparison of what might have been, had this history been writ thirty years ago; yet, as much is come to my hand, as may astonish the reader, and make him value our present and happy settlement: and from the papers I have had access to, I shall essay some account of it. Indeed the difficulties in giving a distinct and methodical history of the nine years before me, are far greater than I met with in the preceding books: the multitude of instances, with the want of dates in some, otherwise very distinct, accounts before me, increase these; and the nature and circumstances of not a few of the acts of cruelty, were such, as public documents cannot be expected to vouch; therefore, I promise myself, the reader will take in good part the accounts I am able at this distance to give, after all the pains I have been at to have them well vouched, though they are not, in some cases, what I wish I were able to give. The field before me is so vast, and the incidents so various, that. I shall not offer any general scheme. of them. As much as may be, this book shall be divided by the years it contains the history of; but this remarkable year I begin with, affords so much matter, hath been so much misrepresented by the advocates for the severities of this time, and, if I mistake not, is so very little known to many presbyterians themselves, that it will take some time to go through it. From this melancholy year 1679, a new and horrid scene of cruel, and, in this nation, unparalleled severity, hath its date. Matters in this church and kingdom take a new turn. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Scottish Church, Vol. 2 The author has much reason to be gratified with the criticisms of the press on the first volume of his history. His statement in the preface that he did not profess to be colourless in his opinions, was interpreted by some critics as an admission that he had written in the spirit and with the design of a partisan. He submits that the words were susceptible of a different interpretation. The writer of Church history, who is aware of his own bias in things ecclesiastical, is the more likely to be on his guard against it, and to steer an even course between divergent lines of historical representation. This has been his honest endeavour in the second volume as in the first. But as the modern period, now brought under review, bristles with controversial matter over which historians have disputed from the Reformation downwards, he has no very sanguine expectation that his treatment of it will escape the charge of partisanship from extreme men of any school. To succeed in satisfying such as are themselves partisans would assuredly be the clearest proof of partisanship. The author desires to express his obligations to the Rev. George Sutherland, Portsoy, the Rev. J. C. Barry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Church of Scotland, Vol. 2: From the Reformation to the Present Time But the chiefs of the Covenanters had now gone too far to recede, or even to remain inactive. They therefore spread abroad a false and malicious report, that the king intended to invade the kingdom with English troops: upon this ground they summoned a meeting, or convention, ofthe noblemen and commissioners of burghs, to meet at lldinburgh on the 20th of February. At this convention a paper was read, which had been drawn up by Balmerino, llope (the king's advocate), and Henderson (moderator of the late Assembly), recommending an appeal to arms, and using such arguments for itsjustification as tended to inflame the passions and prejudices of the meeting. The reasons adduced were declared to be so convincing, to men whose minds were previously made up, that instantly all of them, with one voice, consented to the listing ofan army, and voted general Leslie to be the commander thereof. The reasons hich had been submitted to the convention, and had been found so convincing to tlieui, were immediately published and dispersed to all parts of the kingdom, and the convention ordained, that every minister should read this treasonable do cument from their pulpits, and frame their discourses so as to procure an universal consent amongst their parishioners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the State and Sufferings of the Church of Scotland, From the Restoration to the Revolution, Vol. 2 of 2: With an Introduction Containing the Most Remarkable Occurrences Relating to That Church From the Reformation to the Restoration; With an Introduction, Containing the Most Remarkable Occurrences Relating to That Church, From the Reformation to the Restorat From what has been related in the former volume, we may easily form a judgment of the dismal state of the nation, on account of the arbitrary proceedings of those who had the management of affairs, and the unaccountable severities which many innocent people endured. The rigorous and military execution of the sanguinary laws, now in force, could not but exasperate those who were by this means robbed of their liberties and properties, and of every thing that was dear and valuable, especially as oppressions of every kind were still increasing. All legal methods of redress were cut off from the poor suffering people. What then could they do? Surely one might think, that it was incumbent upon them to fall upon measures for getting from under the feet of their cruel oppressors; for who would chuse to continue in misery, if they could, by any lawful and justifiable method, extricate themselves from it; They were most averse to take arms, until they were forced to it in their own defence. And though they were obliged to have recourse to this expedient, yet they never desired to have an opportunity of making use of it; but, being declared rebels on this account, they were constrained to persevere in it, till the fury of their persecutors drove them to the rising I am now to give an account of.
