Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peter the Great, Emperor of Russia, Vol. 2 of 2: A Study of Historical Biography Osteria of the Four Frigates, shows an Italian influence on some who surrounded Peter. In spite of disease and mortality among the men, in spite of the floods, which evsu in the first year covered nearly the Whole place and drowned some who were too ill to move, the work went on. Lut in its infancy St. Petersburg was constantly in danger from the Swedes, both by sea and land. During 1703. It was threatened from the side of Finland by General Kron hjort, who was encamped with a large force on the banks of the river Sestra, and Vice-admiral Nummers, with nine ships, lay at anchor all the summer Off the mouth of the Neva. Kron. Hjort was repulsed, and Peter then devoted all his attention to getting down some ships which he was building on the river Svir, between Lake Ladoga and Lake Oncga. He went there himself, and for a long time personally superintended their con struction. Finally, after great difficulty from the dangerous navigation on Lake Ladoga, he succeeded in getting the frigate 'standard' and a few transports into the Neva. \vhen the cold weather came, Kummers withdrew with his fleet to a Pin nish port, and Peter, on his yacht, attended by a galliot, went out into the gulf to explore. In spite of the floating ice, he sailed as far as retu-saari, or Iiotlin Island, as it was called by the Russians, and himself measured the depth of the channel. North of this island, which was about eighteen miles from the mouth of the Neva, the water was so shallow and the naviga tion so diflicult that there was no danger. But to protect the southern passage he resolved to fortify the island in the place now occupied by the city and fort of Cronstadt, and at a cannon shot from the shore began a fort in the water. \vith much hard work in sinking stone for the submarine foundation. The fort was completed during that winter, and received the name of Kronslot. (iolovin wrote to Matveief, at London, of the foundation of Kronslot, and, greatly exaggerating the Russian naval force, said that the Tsar could in a very short time bring into the Baltic Sea twenty ships and frigates, together with seventy-eight full galleys, and one hundred brigantines. This was to entice merchant ships to come to St. Petersburg. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peter the Great, Vol. 2 Poland, had, indeed, always swung and turned back and forward, between the south and the north. These alternate impulses, natural enough in a nation so full of youth and strength, have, since those days, been most unnecessarily idealised, erected into a doctrine, and dignified as a work of unification. It must be acknowledged that every nation has, at one time or the other, thus claimed the right to resume the national patrimony, at the expense of neighbouring peoples, and Peter, by some lucky fate, remained, in this respect, within certain bounds Of justice, Of logic, and of truth. Absorbed and almost exhausted, as he soon became, by the desperate effort demanded by his war in the North, he forgot or imperilled much that the conquering ambition of his predecessors had left him in the South and West. He clung to the territory already acquired on the Polish side, retired from the Turkish border, and claimed what he had most right, relatively Speaking, to claim, in the matter of resumption, on his north-western frontier. A sum mary of its means of civilization, derived from its connection with southern Asia, with the Greeks and Italians, and from its Christian ity, the genius of Vladimir and Yaroslaf, and their longevity. De scription of the premature luxury of Kief. Obstacles thrown in the way of Russian civilization, by the situation of that capital, exposing it perpetually to the incursions of the Nomade tribes, to civil wars, and lastly, to endless mutations of fortunes and properties. Happy influence of Christianity; and, nevertheless, new and invincible oh stacles to the civilizing of the Russians, ascribed to barbarian habi tudes, the vanity of men of confirmed habits, and especially to the destruction of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peter the Great, Emperor of Russia, Vol. 1 of 2: A Study of Historical Biography The books consulted are very many, and it has been impossible to cite them all. As continual references to authorities which are chiefly Russian would appeal to very few of my readers, I have thought it best to avoid them, and have mentioned only my chief author ities at the end of the chapters. Historical students and those conversant with the literature of' the period will in this way readily find whence I have taken my facts. For the convenience of the reader I have avoided as far as possible the use of purely Russian words and titles, and where the English forms of proper names are not used, an accentual mark has been placed to facilitate pronunciation. As circumstances have compelled me to live in five different countries since I began this work, often away from public libraries, and with only my own books and my notes to rely upon, I must ask pardon for many deficiencies and slips. Book The Military History of the Russian Empire from Peter the Great until Nicholas II

Download or read book The Military History of the Russian Empire from Peter the Great until Nicholas II written by John W. Steinberg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the rise and the fall of the Russian Empire through the lens of its military history. While much of the literature on this history tends to focus on epochs, The Russian Military and the Creation of Empire uses a variety of archival sources to capture this aspect of modern Russia from Peter the Great right up to the present day. John W. Steinberg analyzes the social dynamic between Russian society and its military over time. Through a focus on civil-military relations, he demonstrates that both the Tsarist and Soviet regimes were built on, and ultimately dependent upon, the support of the military. Case studies of significant battles are also used throughout the volume to reveal insights into the roles, missions, and capabilities of the Russian military since 1689. The Russian Military and the Creation of Empire is a vital study for all students of modern Russia and the history of modern warfare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peter the Great, Vol. 1 of 2 Measure thy powers on thine undertaking and not the undertaking by thy powers. This bold advice, the dictum of a poet and fellow-country man of my own, has been the almost indispensable inspira tion Of this historical work of mine. The figure which forms its subject - towering above the history, bound up, to this very hour, with the existence, of the Russian nation - is not one to be lightly approached. Therefore it is that I have come to him SO late, that I have worked backwards, up the course Of the years, from the great Inheritress to the creator of her inheritance. Have I dared, then, at last, to exchange glances with that great bronze giant, who, so the poets say, 'steps down, on twilight nights, from his granite pedestal, hard by the Neva river-bank, and rides through the sleeping city - triumphant even in death? Have I indeed - Oh, mighty ghost! Who, for well-nigh two hundred years, like some terrible and familiar demon, banntest the places thou didst know in life, - have I, in good truth, happened on the magic formula which brings back speech to phantoms, and builds life up around them, out of the dust of bygone days?
