Book The History of the Royal Family of England Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the Royal Family of England Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Frederic G. Bagshawe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Royal Family of England, Vol. 1 of 2 To write anything like a complete history of the English Royal Family would be to write an extremely comprehensive History of England, as there have been few events in which England has been concerned in which her reigning family have not taken an active part. I have no such ambitious or far-reaching intention. What I propose to do is to give a short account of what I may call the private, as opposed to the public, history of the several Kings and Queens, of their children, and of such of their immediate descendants or relatives as have played any part in English History, or have lived in England; and in doing this I wish to avoid, as far as possible, reference to those great political events which arc in the province of regular historians, and are more or less known to all readers. Many of those of whom it will be necessary to speak are persons whose lives are bound up in the history of their country, whose minutest actions, so far as they arc known, are recorded in many histories and biographies, and over whose characters and motives there have been prolonged, and often acrimonious, discussions. Book Middle English Literature

Download or read book Middle English Literature written by Christopher Cannon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a boldly original account of Middle English literature from the Norman Conquest to the beginning of the sixteenth century. It argues that these centuries are, in fundamental ways, the momentous period in our literary history, for they are the long moment in which the category of literature itself emerged as English writing began to insist, for the first time, that it floated free of any social reality or function. This book also charts the complex mechanisms by which English writing acquired this power in a series of linked close readings of both canonical and more obscure texts. It encloses those readings in five compelling accounts of much broader cultural areas, describing, in particular, the productive relationship of Middle English writing to medieval technology, insurgency, statecraft and cultural place, concluding with an in depth account of the particular arguments, emphases and techniques English writers used to claim a wholly new jurisdiction for their work. Both this history and its readings are everywhere informed by the most exciting developments in recent Middle English scholarship as well as literary and cultural theory. It serves as an introduction to all these areas as well as a contribution, in its own right, to each of them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coburgs: The Story of the Rise of a Great Royal House To the house of saxe-coburg-gotha belong the kings of England and Belgium, the Tsar of Bulgaria, and the ex-king of Portugal. The Coburgs are allied with half the reigning families of Europe. Less than a hundred years ago their name was un known outside their tiny patrimonial duchy in the heart of Saxony. It is interesting to trace their rise from obscurity to world-wide eminence. The ducal families were so large and the revenues so slender that the younger children were all turned adrift as in the fairy-tales, to seek their fortunes. The wars which followed the French Revolution gave these noble adventurers their chance. One of them - delightfully enough, the youngest of the brothers won the heart and hand of the Princess of England. Naturally, in consequence of this alliance his family rose in the social scale. Every one was anxious to be connected with so desirable a family. Queens and princesses sought their hand, and when thrones fell vacant, Coburg princes were called upon to fill them. And the Coburg head seemed to fit any crown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
