Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Rebellion of 1745-6 The present work appeared originally in Constable's Miscellany in 1827. The principal sources of information which then existed for a history of the civil war of 1745, were the contemporary public journals, Mr Home's work (valuable at least for its reports of what the author himself witnessed), the Lockhart and Culloden Papers, the Chevalier Johnstone's Memoirs, and the still fresh traditions of the people. Since from these documents the author constructed the first edition of his narrative, a greater quantity of valuable materials has become accessible than during eighty preceding years. The personal narratives of two distinguished actors, Lord Elcho and Mr Maxwell of Kirkconnel, have been in part or wholly given to the world. In Dr James Browne's History of the Highlands and Highland Clans, there appeared extensive and very important excerpts from the great collection in the possession of the British sovereign, styled 'The Stuart Papers.' To this valuable set of excerpts, Lord Mahon has made additions in his History of Great Britain between the Peace of Utrecht and that of Aix-la-Chapelle. I was myself so fortunate, in 1832, as to become possessed of an extensive collection of papers which had been gathered, early in the present century, by the late Sir Henry Steuart of Allanton, with a view to his composing a History of the Efforts in behalf of the House of Stuart from the Revolution downwards. Book Memoirs of the Rebellion

Download or read book Memoirs of the Rebellion written by Chevalier De Johnstone and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Rebellion: In 1745 and 1746 The character of the Rebellion which broke out in this country in the year 1745, cannot be rightly understood, without a knowledge of our domestic history, and the state of the different parts of the island, from the commencement of the disturbances in the reign of Charles I., down to the period of that insurrection. To the Reformation (itself, no doubt the fruit of growing knowledge and civilisation) we owe the diffusion of the principles of civil, as well as religious liberty. Before that period, even in countries possessed of certain political privileges, tyrannical principles were generally prevalent. It was impossible, however, for men to emancipate themselves from ecclesiastical tyranny, without, in some degree, embracing principles favourable to general freedom; for the arguments, on which they claimed religious liberty, admitted of an easy, and almost unavoidable application to civil rights. This connection was soon perceived by many of the depositaries of power, who resisted innovation in matters of religion, as likely to lead to innovations in other matters. They saw the importance of preserving every link in the chain of tyranny unbroken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jacobite Memoirs of the Rebellion of 1745 The papers composing the present ivolume, and which mm the first body Of authentic historical memoirs respecting the Civil War of 1745 ever presented to the public, are selected from a manuscript collection of such docu ments, formed, within a few years subsequent to the battle of Culloden, by the pious and venerable clergyman whose name is given upon the title-page. The interests of the house of Stewart, it is well known, were identified in Scotland with those Of an episcopal church, which had been displaced at the Revolu tion, and, in 1745, consisted of a few small and scattered congregations, under the super intendence Of reduced number of titular bishops. Previous to the commencement ofthe insurrection, Mr Forbes was settled as minister of the episcopal congregation at Leith; but, while Prince Charles was on his descent from the Highlands, having given cause for suspicion to the officers of state, he was appro hended at St N inian's, September 7, 1745, together with other two clergymen, and two gentlemen, and kept prisoner, first in Stir ling, and afterwards in Edinburgh Castle, till the restoration of tranquillity in May 1746. This accident perhaps prevented him and his companions from joining the standard of the Prince, and was, no doubt, felt at the time as a grievous disappointment. It not only, however, saved him from the disasters of a falling cause, but brought him into a leisurely acquaintance with a number Of the active insurgents, who, being seized at various times, and placed in confinement beside him, became sources of information respecting the events of the campaign, and appear to have been the means of first suggesting to him the idea of the collection, from which the present volume is compiled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir John Cope and the Rebellion of 1745 In consequence of an article in 'Blackwood's Magazine' of July 1894, entitled "Side-lights on the Battles of Preston and Falkirk," in which a description was given of the battle of Prestonpans and of the part which Sir John Cope played therein, my brother, the late General Sir Robert Cadell, resolved to compile a more detailed and strictly accurate account of the battle and of the circumstances which led to it. This was a task for which he was peculiarly qualified, his home being in the immediate vicinity of the battlefield, and he being familiar from boyhood with the local topography and traditions, and also with the history of the times, to say nothing of his large military experience gained in the Crimea and in India. The information which he collected could not be compressed into a magazine article, and the work which he had undertaken assumed larger proportions than he had anticipated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers About the Rebellions of 1715 and 1745: Edited, From the Original Manuscripts, With Introduction and Notes The Jacobite rebellions in Scotland in 1715 and 1745 still retain an interest and even a fascination for many readers of history. Much has been written, especially about the '45, which was organised and led by Prince Charlie in person, but any details regarding either of these important episodes in the life of Scotland can never be unwelcome. The three following short contributions to the subject, two relating to the less known insurrection of 1715, and the third to that of 1745, may therefore possess some interest.
