Book A History of the Papacy Vol 3

Download or read book A History of the Papacy Vol 3 written by Mandell Creighton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Papacy, Vol. 3: During the Period of the Reformation, 1464-1518 The epoch traversed in these volumes is one of the most ignoble, if not the most disastrous, in the history not only of the Papacy, but of Europe. It is scarcely fair to isolate the 'popes from their surroundings and hold them up to exceptional ignominy; yet it is impossible to forget their high office and their lofty claims. I have tried to deal fairly with the moral delinquencies of the Popes, without, I trust, running the risk of lowering the standard of moral judgment. But it seems to me neither necessary to moralise at every turn in historical writing, nor becoming to adopt an attitude of lofty superiority over anyone who ever played a prominent part in European affairs, nor charitable to lavish undiscriminating censure on any man. All I can claim is that I have not allowed my judgment to be warped by a desire to be picturesque or telling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Papacy, Vol. 2: During the Period of the Reformation On leaving Constance V. felt himself for the first time free. He had been taught by the events of the last four years that freedom was only possible for a Pope in Italy, in spite of all the temporary inconveniences which might arise from Italian politics. But much as he might glories of the Papacy in its old historic seat, he could not immediately proceed to Rome, John XXIII. had abandoned Rome, and had been driven even to flee from Bologna, owing to his political helplessness and the power of his opponent Ladislas. The death of Ladislas and the abeyance of the Papacy had only plunged Italian affairs into deeper confusion, and Martin V. has to pause a while and consider how he could best return to Italy. Through the Swiss cantons Martin made a triumphal progress, and had no reason to complain of want of respect or lack of generosity. On June 11 he reached Geneva, and in the city of the prince-bishops he stayed for three months; there he had the satisfaction of receiving the allegiance of the citizens of Avignon. He seems to have wished to display himself as much as possible, and exert the prestige of the restored Papacy to secure his position. At the end of September he moved slowly from Geneva through Savoy to Turin, and thence through Pavia to Milan, where he was received with great honour by Filippo Maria Visconti on October 12. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Papacy, Vol. 1 of 2: To the Period of the Reformation N ow, it would be a question very much like that which has been here supposed, if any one should say, When did the Papacy begin? If this question be proposed in a captions Spirit, or with a View to gain advantage in argument, then the inquirer will pro bably ask for the precise period, - the very first year, or at least the first few years, - in which the system, hitherto unheard of; made its appearance; and in this way it would be easy to entrap an adversary who should attempt to give a definite reply, or to make several such respondents contradict each other, so as to give some colour to an assertion that in point Of fact they are all wrong - that the Papacy did not com mence at the date assigned by Protestants, - and that, therefore, as the disputant would still further con elude, the system did not take its rise at any period subsequent to the establishment Of Christianity itself; but was founded when our Lord said to Simon.
