Book excerpt: We Were The Ninth is a translation, carefully edited and thoroughly annotated, of an important Civil War regiment. The Ninth Ohio--composed of Ohio Germans mostly from Cincinnati--saw action at Rich Mountain and Carnifex Ferry in West Virginia, Shiloh, Corinth, Perryville, Hoover's Gap, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Chickamauga. The Ninth began the War amid misgivings (Would a German-speaking regiment in the Union Army cause chaos?) and ended its active service among the honored units. It continued as an active German-speaking veterans' organization. Constantin Grebner published this significant history, in German, in 1897 and noted that it "is intended as neither a history of the war nor a definitive account of battles. Rather, it is restricted to a straightforward, veracious report of what happened to The Ninth, and to recounting as accurately as possible The Ninth's experiences as a wartime regiment." Frederic Trautmann's English translation is faithful to Grebner's original text, preserving its integrity while maintaining its energy, precision, and grace.

Y., author of the History of the Seventy-ninth (Highlanders), N. Y. S. M., and N. Y. Vols., and of which regiment he was a member. This is a complete, illustrated history of the regiment's service in the Irish Brigade and the Rainbow Division. Functioning as the 1st Regiment, Irish Brigade, 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac throughout the Civil War, the regiment made history at Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Appomatox. According to legend, an exasperated General Jackson cursed them as part of "that damn brigade." Today, the regiment is known as 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry (Mechanized), New York Army National Guard.

Excerpt: ...perhaps rations enough for fifty men. On the following morning we moved in the direction of Holly Springs, Miss. The day was very hot and the roads dusty. Add to this, the suffering from hunger, and it would be hard to describe the amount of suffering the men endured. We camped at night near a Mr. Robinson's. (To-day we had to march about nine miles out of the way, on account of some one destroying a bridge in the roar of the retreating army.) The officers got a very good supper at Mr. R.'s, by paying one dollar each, in Greenbacks. He would not take anything else. The men got but little to eat. "On the morning of tlie 7th, the officers hired a team to take them to Holly Springs, for which they paid $20. We arrived there at 11 o'clock at night. Here we were taken to Col. Roddy's Head Quarters. He said he was surprised that we, being North-western men, were fighting Southern men. Captain Lowe told him that we were not in a condition to resent an insult, and did not wish to be insulted. This ended the conversation. "The next evening we started by Railroad, under guard, for Jackeon, Miss., arriving there about 10 A. M., on the 9th of October. Here we were taken before General Thillman, and paroled for that city and Vicksburg. We had good rooms at the best hotel in Jackson. On the morning of the 10th we took cars for Vicksburg. On this trip we had no guard, except one Rebel Captain. We arrived at Vicksburg about 1 o'clock, and were quartered at the 'Washington Hotel.' Wa were limited to certain streets. Otherwise we had our liberty. Our fare at the hotel was corn broad, corn coffee, fresh beef and molasses. The ladies were allowed wheat bread, and when the darkies could do so without being detected by their master, they would supply...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Ninth Regiment, New Hampshire Volunteers in the War of the Rebellion The survivors of the Ninth New Hampshire volunteers have experienced unusual difficulties in the preparation of their regi mental history. Soon after the Rebellion it was the unanimous desire that such a volume Should be compiled by George H. Chandler, but his death, August 12, 1883, prevented the fulfil ment of this hope. By that unfortunate event his comrades were deprived of the story which might have been told so well by their former major, a man of quick parts and of pre-eminent ability in military and civil life. They did not, however, aban don the enterprise, and John E. Mason, first lieutenant of Com pany D, was Chosen historian in due time. He had made some progress, when in August, 1891, Herbert B. Titus was associ ated with him; but Death, intervening a second time, March 5, 1892, called away the lieutenant, and left to the associate the accomplishment of the unfinished task. Excerpt: ...under the great burdens of service and suffering. In his diary, which he kept while at Belle Isle, he daily described his rations--a small piece of corn-bread, an inch or two square, a morsel of meat or a trifle of samp, which only served to prolong his suffering and starvation; yet he often closed the day's record with these words, --"How thankful I ought to be to God for all his goodness to me." A FEW STRAY SHOTS. Soon after the regiment entered the slashed timber General Griffin sent one of his aids, Lieutenant Burbank, to Major Chandler, with an order for the regiment to come back; but they were under full headway on the charge, and what with the confusion, the yelling, the bursting of shells, and all, the order failed to reach them, and they kept on their way. When this fact was reported by the orderly to General Griffin, the general remarked, "If they have gone in there, you can say good-bye to the Ninth New Hampshire." As the regiment was making ready for the advance, a man came along, without any gun or equipments, and took his place in the company to which he belonged. The commanding officer said to him, "What are you here for without any arms?" "Oh, never mind," said the soldier, "some of these fellows will be dead pretty soon, and then I can have all I want!" He soon equipped himself. Another man, who was in the rear rank, was troubled a good deal by a front rank man not keeping up. After pushing against the fellow several times, he finally seized him by the shoulder and said, "You get into the rear rank and let me step into the front!" He had hardly got into place when he was shot. For close shaves, Provencher, of Company E, and Plummer, of Company B, can divide the...
