Book The History of the Literature of Wales

Download or read book The History of the Literature of Wales written by Charles Wilkins and published by . This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE The History of the Literature of Wales has been justly regarded as falling naturally into four great divisions. The first partially shrouded by the veil of antiquity, and by myth; the second from that margin land of fable and accepted history to the middle of the Fourteenth Century; the third from that period to A.D. 1600, and the fourth from the beginning of the Seventeenth Century to our own times. Our task is devoted to the second and third distinctive epochs, and if it lack the scope for learned criticism which the first has had from the hands of the able philologists and historians who have preceded us, it will be found, we trust, in its elaboration, in the extent of enquiry and the richness of our gleanings, no less acceptable and interesting. In submitting this history in English, we do so with the earnest conviction that it will be more generally useful. Every educated Welshman is now conversant with English, but there are few educated Englishmen who are conversant with Welsh. Every Welshman, again, is thoroughly satisfied of the excellence of the literature of his own country; but the mass of Englishmen have to take the assertion on trust, its support being the reputation of the friendly critics who assert it, and a few desultory translations. We have now endeavoured to bring together an array of evidence that must satisfy all doubters, and have striven at the same time to give a work that shall be of use to the student, and of interest to the public. No one, honestly, can adversely criticise the worth of the collection of facts now before the reader; fault only can be found in arrangement and the capacity of the historian. The Author.

Book Writing a Small Nation s Past

Download or read book Writing a Small Nation s Past written by Neil Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume to examine how the history of Wales was written in a period that saw the emergence of professional historiography, largely focused on the nation, across Europe and in the United States. It thus sets Wales in the context of recent work on national history writing in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and, more particularly, offers a Welsh perspective on the ways in which history was written in small, mainly stateless, nations. The comparative dimension is fundamental to the volume's aim, highlighting what was distinctive about Welsh historical writing and showing how the Welsh experience mirrors and illuminates broader historiographical developments. The book begins with an introduction that uses the concept of historical culture as a way of exploring the different strands of historiography covered in the collection, providing orientation to the chapters that follow. These are divided into four sections: 'Contexts and Backgrounds', 'Amateurs and Popularizers', 'Creating Academic Disciplines', and 'Comparative Perspectives'. All these themes are then drawn together in the conclusion to examine how far Welsh historians exemplify widespread trends in the writing of national history, and thereby point-up common themes that emerge from the volume and clarify its broader significance for students of historiography.

Book The History and Anatomy of Auctorial Self Criticism in the European Middle Ages

Download or read book The History and Anatomy of Auctorial Self Criticism in the European Middle Ages written by Anita Obermeier and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study outlines the history and anatomy of the European apology tradition from the sixth century BCE to 1500 for the first time. The study examines the vernacular and Latin tales, lyrics, epics, and prose compositions of Arabic, English, French, German, Greek, Icelandic, Italian, Spanish, and Welsh authors. Three different strands of the apology tradition can be proposed. The first and most pervasive strand features apologies to pagan deities and-later-to God. The second most important strand contains literary apologies made to an earthly audience, usually of women. A third strand occurs more rarely and contains apologies for varying literary offenses that are directed to a more general audience. The medieval theory of language privileges an imitation of the Christian master narrative and a hierarchical medieval view of authorship. These notions express a medieval philosophical concern about language and its role, and therefore the role of the author, in cosmic history. Despite the fact that women apologize for different purposes and reasons, their examples illustrate, on yet another level, the antifeminist subtext inherent in the entire apology tradition. Overall, the apology tradition characterized by interauctoriality, intertextuality, and intratextuality, enables self-critical authors to refer not only backward but also-primarily-forward, making the medieval apology a progressive strategy that engenders new literature. This study would be relevant to all medievalists, especially those interested in literature and the history of ideas.

Book A Bibliography of Welsh Literature in English Translation

Download or read book A Bibliography of Welsh Literature in English Translation written by S. Rhian Reynolds and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Bibliography of Welsh Literature in English Translation is a groundbreaking volume that maps for the first time the translation history of Wales's two languages. This is also the first listing of Welsh-English literary translations and should be an indispensable tool not only for scholars but also for lay readers and for students of Celtic and Welsh literatures. As a resource that opens up for the first time one of the richest fields of translation in the British context, this bibliography is also a pioneering Welsh contribution to the burgeoning academic field of translation studies. The Centre for Research into the English Literature and Language of Wales (CREW), directed by Professor M. Wynn Thomas, received a prestitgious research grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board for a one-year project in 2001 that was to culminate in a web-based database, an international conference and this published volume. S. Rhian Reynolds was employed as the postdoctoral research officer for the project, which grew far beyond the expected lifespan due to the wealth and quantity of the material uncovered. Translation practice has encompased the whole wealth of Welsh-language literature and among the thousands of translations recorded here are the acknowledged classics of European culture---The Mabinogion, the work of Dafydd ap Gwilym, the hymns of William Williams Pantycelyn and the plays, fiction, and political writings of Saunders Lewis. Ever since Welsh-English translation was first instigated in the eighteenth century it has provided an invaluable interface between Wales and the wider world (even non-anglophone cultures usually discover Welsh-language literature through the medium of English), between Wales and the other countries of the British Isles and (most importantly of all, perhaps) between the two cultures of Wales itself.
