Book A Hundred Years of Quarter Sessions

Download or read book A Hundred Years of Quarter Sessions written by E. G. Dowdell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1932, this book examines the government of the county of Middlesex from 1660 to 1760. In this period, Middlesex was disadvantaged by its proximity to London, as overburdened Justices of the Peace ignored it for more pressing or urbane duties in the capital. At this time, the old Tudor system of governance was also falling into decay, leading the people to replace the law with more practical and direct forms of justice. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in English legal history.

Book The Wapentake of Wirral

Download or read book The Wapentake of Wirral written by Ronald Stewart-Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wapentake of Wirral: A History of the Royal Franchise of the Hundred and Hundred Court of Wirral in Cheshire; With an Appendix Containing a List of the Officers and Lords of the Hundred From the Fourteenth Century; A Series of Leases of the Hundred From 1352 to 1786; And The Little more than fifty years ago, within the memory of some now alive, there existed in Wirral a court of so-called, justice owned by a private individual and upwards of a thousand years old. The power of summoning jurors, of fining offenders, of deciding the law, of ordering payment of debts, of levying distresses, has so long been associated by the present generation with courts administered by officials of the State, that it is difficult to imagine such powers in the hands of a private citizen. Yet for some years in the fifties the inhabitants of Birkenhead, Tranmere, Bebington, Neston, and other parts of Wirral went in daily fear of such a court. The only attempt at an account of the Wapentake or Hundred Court of Wirral is contained in the last chapter of Mrs. Gamlin's book "Twixt Mersey and Dee" (Liverpool, 1897) and deals only with the last forty years of the Court's existence.
