To such terms while De Thou deolarmg' that Briquemaut himself made great efforts to avoid death. He offered not only to ao knowledge Coligny's guilt, but even to serve against Rochelle. Cavagnes, however, exhorted him to dis play the firmness for which he was celebrated; and h'om that time his intrepidity never forsook him. An important section of nearly 100 pages is devoted to the Huguenots of America, with emphasis on the formidable Huguenot settlements at Oxford (Mass.), New Rochelle (N.Y.), New Paltz (N.Y.), Frenchtown (R.I.), and Jamestown (S.C.). The work further contains a "List of the Names of Huguenot Families in America," documenting the arrival in Boston of those families who later settled in Maine, New York, and Rhode Island; and the names of those who settled in the South, including the settlement on the Santee River in South Carolina.
