Book The War and the Bible Classic Reprint

Download or read book The War and the Bible Classic Reprint written by H. G. Enelow and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and the Bible In every country the Great War has created not merely military and economic problems, but also spiritual problems of many aspects. M. Henri Bergson has remarked that upon the outbreak of the war, France at once changed spiritually - she became like a cathedral, solemn and grave. No one who was in France in those fateful days of August, 1914, could escape that transformation. The air was charged with spiritual awe. A similar effect the War has had in every other country touched by it, though, of course, each has expressed it in its own way. It is not certain to what degree we have been spiritually affected by the War. Perhaps there has not yet been that impact upon our mind and soul, that challenge, that catharsis, which others have experienced, and which has found voice in so many of the literary productions of the past four years. But that it is sure to come, there is not the shadow of a doubt. "Man liveth not by bread alone" - this the War has proved anew. Book Germany s Holy War and Other Articles Classic Reprint

Download or read book Germany s Holy War and Other Articles Classic Reprint written by Albert Sauveur and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-19 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany's Holy War and Other Articles Germany's bid for America's sympathy on the ground that she is conducting a holy war to protect herself and the rest of Europe from falling under Muscovite domination will not appeal to the intelligent, clear-minded American. It would be a calamity indeed for the whole world if Europe were to be ruled by the Slav, but it would likewise be a calamity should the Teuton become her master. The imminent danger to day is not the rule of the Romanoffs, but that of the Hohenzollerns. The present war is not, as the German Chancellor would have it thought, a life-and-death struggle between Germany and the Muscovite races of Russia, but obviously a life-and-death struggle between democracy and German militarism. This is why the sympathy of the majority of the American people must necessarily be with Germany's opponents. The present coalition is not directed against the German people and German civilization no more than the coalition that put an end to the power of Napoleon the First was directed against the French people and French civilization; it is directed against the rule of might represented by German militarism. It is obvious that Germany's supreme desire in the present struggle is not the warding off of Slavic rule, that is only incidental, - but the bringing of Europe under her own rule. Hence the present alignment of Powers against her. Her eagerness to crush France is not stimulated by her desire to save the latter country from Muscovite domination, but rather by her wish to increase her own power at the expense of her neighbors. Her evident intention to annex Belgium, should she be victorious, is not directed against the Slavs, but aims solely at her own aggrandizement.
