Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regimental histories abound, but few can be as stirring as this story of the fortunes of the famous Yorkshire-based Green Howards. Raised in 1688 in response to a call for loyal troops, the Green Howards have maintained their tradition of loyalty over the past 300 years winning many superb battle honours. Their history reflects that of the British Army as there is hardly a major campaign that this Regiment has not been involved in; the French Wars of 1697-1793, the American War of Independence, Crimean War, First and Second World Wars, service in Suez, Malaya, Northern Ireland, peacekeeping operations in Bosnia and the war in the Gulf. This fine book brings the story of one of Britain's finest regiments right up to date.

Book Green Howards in the Great War

Download or read book Green Howards in the Great War written by H. C. Wylly and published by . This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A suitably massive history for a regiment with an enormous reputation. This volume covers the huge range of the Green Howards (the Yorkshire Regiment s) Great War campaigns - and takes the narrative beyond the war to post-war campaigns in Afghanistan and the intervention against the Russian revolution. Compiled from diaries, letters and interviews with survivors as well as from official diaries, reports and logs, this is a classic Regimental history of a famous unit which, as general Edward Bulfin, the Green Howards Colonel-in-Chief modestly writes: Fought on almost every front, and pulled their weight . The regiment s 1st battalion was on garrison duty in India; while the 2nd battalion landed in France in time for the first battle of Ypres in November 1914. Other Green Howard battalions fought in Flanders; France; Italy; Gallipoli; as well as serving in Russia, the Balkans; Palestine; Syria and Mesopotamia. The cost was high - but, as an appendix listing the 12 Victoria Crosses won by the Green Howards in the war testifies, the record was proud.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Green Howards in South Africa 1899-1902 From month to month during the late war, I regularly sent home to the Editor of The Green Howard's Gazette a short letter, descriptive of our movements in the field. These I have now endeavoured to arrange in a more readable and extended form, my object being to place on record some account of the part taken by the old 19th in the recent conflict in South Africa. Lieutenant W. G. Tarbet has kindly given me permission to make use of his letters on the work of the 4th Battalion Mounted Infantry, which were also written for our regimental Gazette. They appear almost verbatim. For the account of the services of the 2nd Mounted Infantry, in which we were also represented, my thanks are due to Major M. H. Tomlin and Private S. Fallowell, as well as to all those who have kindly lent me their photographs or otherwise assisted me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Green Howards in the Great War written by John Sheen and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2024-09-30 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In answer to Lord Kitchener’s appeal, in late August and September 1914 many men joined Alexandra’s Princess of Wales’s Own Yorkshire Regiment, better known as The Green Howards. Recruits came from around the Middlesbrough area and the ironstone mines on the North Yorkshire moors, while others came from the East Durham coalfield and the Durham City area. The 8th and 9th Battalions left the Regimental Depot in Richmond in late September and moved to Frensham on the Hampshire/Surrey border, where they trained hard until bad weather forced a move to barracks in Aldershot. They arrived on the Somme front at the end of June 1916, but were not involved in the fighting until 5 July, when the 9th Battalion captured Horseshoe trench and Lieutenant Donald Simpson Bell won the VC when he destroyed a German machine gun position. On 10 July both battalions took part in the capture of Contalmaison, a village that had been a first day objective. A second VC was awarded posthumously to Private William Short of the 8th Battalion during the fighting in Munster Alley in August 1916. The next year found the 23rd Division in the Ypres Salient, where they were in and out of the line until June 1917 when they took part in the Battle of Messines and the 8th Battalion had the honor of taking Hill 60. In November 1917 the division was sent to Italy to bolster the hard-pressed Italian Army, but the 9th Battalion returned to France in 1918 where they fought until the Armistice. The 8th Battalion stayed on in Italy and fought at the crossing of the Piave and Vittorio Veneto, which brought the war to an end in Italy.

Book excerpt: A famous county regiment at war on the veldt The Green Howards are a regiment with a long association with Yorkshire and the regimental names survives within the Yorkshire Regiment of the British Army to this day. It has served under Marlborough, during the American War of Independence, in India, during the Crimean War, in the Sudan, on the North western Frontier and on many other campaigns and battlefields. This book concerns the regiment's service during the Boer War at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in South Africa. This fascinating account chronicles the men of the Green Howards at the fiercely contested Battle of Paardeburg, where Sergeant Atkinson won a Victoria Cross, and beyond. The book contains very interesting accounts of the regiments service as mounted infantry as well as vital information for genealogists.
