Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Dominion of Canada The subject of Canadian history has been usually treated in the textbooks authorized in elementary and secondary schools from a Provincial rather than a Dominion standpoint. Such works at best do not meet our present need, as they necessarily fail to give adequate recognition to all sections of the country, and as they often contain exaggerated notions of provincial matters. It was thought by many teachers that this mode of treatment should be changed and a wider view presented of the history and consolidation of the Dominion. In 1889 the Quebec Provincial Association of Teachers discussed the feasibility of preparing a history of Canada with this object in view, and in the following year the Teachers' Associations of Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia, also considered the same subject. In July, 1891, representatives of the different provinces met at the Education Department in Toronto, for a further consideration of the question. Nevertheless, it was not until July, 1892, at the meeting of the Dominion Educational Association in Montreal, that a scheme was formulated for the preparation of a text-book by competition, and a committee was appointed to examine such manuscripts as might be offered. Download or read book History of the Dominion of Canada Classic Reprint written by William Parr Greswell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Dominion of Canada New England filled up far more rapidly than New France, and the test of population was always against the French, generation after generation. Little by little France's dream of Transatlantic Empire faded away. After 1783 it might have been supposed that the History of Canada would be simplified when the History of North America parts into two distinct channels. But such is not the case. The continual quarrels of the French and British colonists north of the international boundary, sometimes on questions of race and sometimes on religion, obscure the narrative and interfere with the plain course of material progress. The settlement of the United Empire Loyalists in Ontario complicated the pages of history, whilst it created a Province. Two nationalities were facing one another, and Lord Durham observed in his Report (1838) that their antagonism was bitter, strong and thoroughly uncompromising. The Pax Britannica has settled down long ago upon French and English, Roman Catholics and Protestants, and the country, since the Confederation Bill of 1867, seems to have. Entered upon a long untroubled era of prosperity; but this end was not gained without much delay and many misunderstandings. Even now we seem to hear the echoes of the old strife. For many years it was the policy of the Home Government to act upon the prin ciple of Divide et impera, and to keep the Canadian settle ments as distinct as possible from one another, fearing rather than favouring the idea of political union. Traces of this policy were discernible, Lord Durham remarks, up to 1817. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short History of the Dominion of Canada, From 1500 to 1878 I present the portraits of the Honorable W. E. Gladstone, and the not less honorable Mary A. Livermore, si side because I consider them the two most interest ing representatives of their respective sexes now living. If Mr. Gladstone is not the greatest living scholar and statesman, a great portion of mankind are mistaken. His abilities m the aggregate have no equal in the whole range of Englishmen from the earliest times to the present day. He is one of the few men whose great popularity is not based so much upon his mastery of one particular department as upon his mastery of many depart ments. His specialty appears to be that to which he turns his attention, whether it be art, science, literature, finance, or the higher questions of moral and political philosophy. His! Statesmanship has given a higher dignity to the Liberal party than it has hitherto enjoyed, and his scholarship has added a greater solidity to English literature. Mrs. Livermore cannot, in any sense, be compared to Mr. Gladstone, except that both are moral reformers. She is not a woman of great intellectual attainments, though her general information is creditable to one of ordinary mental powers. She is remark able rather for the strength and correctness of her convictions, and for the influence which she sways by the eloquence of an earnest life, than for her natural endowments or mental acquire ments. Her life thus far is a monument of good deeds, and her sex will hereafter for many generations reap the fruits of her noble efforts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dominion of Canada and the Canadian Pacific Railway Now assuming, and I think that the assumption is a fair one, that the longevity and fecundity of the people of Canada are not less than of the people of England, the ratio of increase in Canada should be equal to that of England, and taking into account the fact that between 1860 and 1870 there was a large emigration from England and a large immigration into Canada, it is evident that the ratio of increase in Canada ought in that period to have been greater than in England - as we have seen the Dominion census shows it to have been less. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Dominion: Studies of Canada Canadian life, the most important of the problems which confront Canadians, and those external relations which have the greatest general interest. It has been a satisfaction to find that throughout Canada they have, in their original form, been very generally accepted as fair statements of the questions with which they deal. As I have never hesitated to point out the drawbacks and limitations of the country as well as its advantages, this approval seems to indicate that Canadians have reached a point where they are quite willing that the merits and defects of their country should be freely weighed together. The fact marks an important stage in the growth of a self-reliant feeling in a young community. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution of the Dominion of Canada: Its Government and Its Politics Certainly in one respect parliamentary government is most impressive, and that is in its capacity promptly to determine the popular will upon a vital issue. An American presidential election seldom ej'ects this. The issue may have already passed into the background before the vote can be taken, and the large number of controversies pressed upon the American elec torate at the end of each four years confuse the main issue and render the decision so doubtful that it is rarely found binding upon the administration elected to power. The Historical Department is perhaps much less diffuse than it might have been but there is so much of party politics mixed up with much of our history, that without entering upon the troubled sea of politics, it was impossible to be much more minute than I have been. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and the Canadian Question Where the subject is so complex and so disjointed, to devise a satisfactory arrangement is not easy. Writers and readers of the history of the Dominion too well know how wanting it is in unity. For the special purpose of this work, which is neither elaborate description nor detailed history, but the presentation of a case and of a problem, it seemed best first, briefly to delineate the Provinces, which are the factors of the case, then to sketch their political history, leading up to Confederation, then to give an account of the Confederation itself, with its political sequel, up to the present time, and finally to propound the problem. The general reader, if any one answering to that description ever takes up this work, may skip the chapter on the Federal polity, the subject of which to the reader specially interested in Colonial institutions will probably seem the most important of all. To impart anything like liveliness to a discussion of the British North America Act one must have the touch of Voltaire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada Geography plays such an influential part in the past story and the present condition of that long string of British North American provinces which, stretching right across North America, now comprise the Dominion of Canada, that some preliminary indication of its character seems indispensable here. The shape of the Dominion is, in short, unique among countries - among those at least which count for much in our modern civilization. It has affected its history in the past so vitally and influences all its political, commercial, and social considerations so strongly to-day, that a general idea of its physical characteristics seems vital to a proper understanding of its past and present conditions.
